Описание: This book provides a comprehensive and authoritative review of the chemical analysis of UV filters in coastal waters and their impact on the marine environment. The sun care is today the most important sector within the cosmetics industry, with annual increases in sales. The main components of sunscreens, organic and inorganic UV filters, have been detected in many coastal regions, with the highest concentrations in coastal areas under high anthropogenic pressure. Moreover, these compounds have been found to be bioaccumulated in aquatic biota causing biological and toxicological responses; some organic UV filters act as endocrine disruptors in aquatic biota, affecting survival, behavior, growth, development and reproduction. On the other hand, inorganic UV filters, mainly based on nanoparticles, have been demonstrated to have various impacts on marine organisms, such as inducing oxidative stress in abalones, accumulating in microalgae, affecting the immune response in mussels, bleaching corals, and genotoxicity in fish, among others. All these effects of sunscreens on the marine environment highlight the need for more stringent and environmentally friendly regulations. This book covers the latest analytical methodologies used in assessing the impact of UV filters impact on marine waters, especially on marine biota, and also critiques the global regulation of UV filters and the environmental risk of using sunscreens. Featuring specific case studies of the environmental effects of sunscreens in the Mediterranean Sea and Hawaii, which highlight the importance of balancing human health with environmental health of coastal ecosystems, it will appeal not only to scientists and students from various disciplines (environmental chemistry, biology, ecology, biogeochemistry, fisheries and climate change among others), but also to environmental managers wanting to promote new restrictive regulations on the use of UV filters, and to professionals from the cosmetic industry interested in the development of eco-friendly sunscreens.
Описание: This volume offers an overview of the occurrence of emerging organic contaminants in Mediterranean rivers and their relevance to their chemical and ecological quality under water scarcity. With chapters covering the effects under multiple stress conditions of pharmaceuticals, polar pesticides, personal care products, and industrial chemicals, the observations presented can be applicable to other parts of the world where water scarcity is an issue . It is of interest to environmental chemists, ecologists, environmental engineers, and ecotoxicologists, as well as water managers and decision-makers.

Описание:
A current update of the published information on sunscreen chemicals and their impact on humanity and the environment. The author found it is so much worse than reported in her 2012 book: Sunscreens - Biohazard: Treat as Hazardous Waste. The evidence continues to pile up against how detrimental sunscreens are on the body. Titanium dioxide is now placed not only in sunscreens but makeups, food, etc. It may become the DDT of the 21st century and no one is paying attention to this toxic metal.
In her newest book, Dr. Lani Simpson provides readers with no-nonsense, easy-to-understand advise about the sun and how our bodies react to sun exposure. This go-to-guide for all members of the family includes: practical information about how to obtain vitamin D from the sun safely, how to protect yourself and your family from sunburns and how to find safe SPF products and apply them properly. This book examines how our ancestors worshipped the sun and how those beliefs affect our relationship with the sun in present times. Dr. Lani's No-nonsense Sun Health Guide advocates for a conscious and respectful relationship with the sun.
The sun is now listed as a carcinogen - this is true, however there are hundreds of conditions that have been associated with vitamin D deficiency - multiple cancers, hormone imbalance (PMS), bone loss and osteoporosis to multiple sclerosis. So how do we get the the vitamins and nutrients we need from the sun without damaging our health? Is taking a vitamin D supplement the answer? If so how much? These questions and many more are addressed in Dr. Lani's No-nonsense Sun Health Guide.
This go-to-guide also reveals the truth about:
sun exposure
vitamin D
sun tanning
skin cancer
chemicals in skin products
sunscreen chemicals
insomnia and the sun

Описание:
Designed with practicing dermatologists, dermatology trainees, physicians, and scientists interested in photoprotection in mind, this concise and highly illustrated guide provides the latest knowledge of photoprotection in dermatology and cosmetic science. Clinical Guide to Sunscreens and Photoprotection also addresses recent important international and domestic regulatory activity and requirements on the use of novel sun protective chemicals and proper labeling of products to ensure increased consumer awareness.
This concisely written, problem-oriented text explores:
The revised edition of the guide to environmental impact of pharmaceuticals and personal care products
The revised and updated second edition of Pharma-Ecology joins the health and environmental sciences professions' concern over the occurrence and fate of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment and explores how to best minimize their impact. The text highlights the biological effects of various classes of pharmaceutical compounds under clinical settings, their modes of action, and approximate quantities consumed. The second edition contains the most recent knowledge about the ecological impact of PPCPs as more sensitive detection techniques have become available, since the book was first published.
The second edition offers the most up-to-date information on pharma ecology and bridges the gap between medicine, public health, and environmental science. This new edition contains helpful learning objectives for each chapter, as well as a brief section at the end of each chapter that presents a set of open ended questions. This vital resource:
- Explores the biological effects of pharmaceutical compounds under clinical settings, their modes of action, approximate quantities consumed
- Provides researchers and scientists with critical background data on the environmental impacts of PPCPs
- Contains the most current information on PPCPs' ecological impacts, based on new detection techniques
- Bridges the gap between medicine, public health, and environmental science
Written for ecologists, engineers, microbiologists, pharmacists, toxicologists, chemists, physicians, and veterinarians involved in pollution and environmental analysis, the second edition of Pharma-Ecology contains the most current information available on the environmental impact of pharmaceuticals and personal care products.
