This four-part multidisciplinary volume linearly engages with Zimbabwe’s not too distant past and present socio-economic and political situation to 2017. It traces, explores, and analyzes the proceedings and internal mechanisms of the country’s state of crisis via eclectic lens to primarily argue that, while during the colonial era some western governments were, and could indeed be implicated and held complicit for the negative developments in the country, post–independence, particularly from 1997 to 2017, Zimbabweans must objectively, individually and collectively introspect and take responsibility for some of the crisis. Part 2 consequently examines and paradoxically, both commends and condemns the agency of both the then Mugabe–led government and those Zimbabweans who refused to be victims and devised strategies to survive the crisis, albeit, at times, by victimizing others. Part 3 scrutinizes the highs and lows of the crisis by focusing on some of the prominent personalities of the crisis period covered. It premises that as a result of the November intervention by the military, the crisis had by 2017 reached a watershed, one that could either abate or exacerbate the crisis after Zimbabwe’s elections in 2018. Despite the uncertainty which lay ahead, Part 4 audaciously and optimistically, proffers and charts prospective paths and possibilities which are open to the country as it faces the future.
In the aftermath of the twentieth century’s raging warfare, attempts were made to create an environment in which new relationships between European nations could be built around a common identity. Yet, in the twenty-first century, identityconflicts are gaining a new intensity in parts of the continent. In the analysis of some sub-state nationalist parties, the prospect of European Union membership reduces the economic and political risks of secession. Meanwhile, to the east, any moves towards expansion of EU membership are viewed by Russia not as a peace project but as acts of aggression. This volume assembles a series of comparative and single-area case studies drawn from different academic disciplines. While interrogating the history of identity conflict in the European context, an essential component of efforts to reduce such conflicts in the future, the authors bring an array of methodological approaches to analyses of the many intersecting political, cultural and economic factors that influence the formation of nationhood and identity, and the resurgence of nationalism.

Описание: India's foreign policy in the Gulf has been a confounding situation for years. From the oil boom of the 1970s until Manmohan Singh took office in 2004, the density of India's interactions with the region, in the form of migration, financial remittances, or trade, surpassed by multiple orders of magnitude India's diplomatic and strategic ties with the Gulf states. The volume aims to examine the subject from a variety of theoretical lenses and methodological approaches. It thus brings together various approaches to key contemporary themes of India's foreign policy towards the Gulf region. It treads a range of traditional and emergent themes in India's foreign policy in the Gulf region, including India's alignment choices, its strategic partnerships in the region, the paradiplomacy of Indian states in the region, and the management of Indian immigrants.
Описание: The growth rate of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the Asia-Pacific region greatly surpasses the world average. When the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is better realized, then the world s largest free trade zone will be firmly established. It seems that this region has a very rosy outlook indeed; however, this region also faces a large number of serious problems such as: atomic energy in Japan, conflicts about East Asian regional integration, the decline of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA), and the TPP s possible impact on the Japanese universal health insurance system. We now face a possible Sino-Japanese military conflict concerning the Senkaku Islands (or Diaoyutai Islands). In short, the Asia-Pacific region has both a rosy future and the potential influence from unstable and dangerous elements at work within the region at present. The main purpose of this book is to analyze historical development, whilst looking at the contemporary situation of Japan from interdisciplinary perspectives. This book asks three major questions: (1) Is this really globalization? (2) What are Japan s relations with other Asian countries? (3) Do U.S.-Japan relations still matter? Fourteen leading scholars in their fields answer these questions from interdisciplinary perspectives."
Описание: This book examines the problem of accountability in two African political systems, South Africa and Nigeria. Despite the principle of separation of powers and the doctrine of checks and balances among the institutions of governance, a burgeoning governance crisis stifles the potential of accountability and good governance. Legislative oversight in the two countries remains largely ineffective while citizens are left to face the consequences of the mismanagement of public resources by political elites. This book critically assesses how the legislative institutions in South Africa and Nigeria have been unable to harness the requisite constitutional powers to ensure accountability in government and explores the feasibility of their effectiveness. The book begins with a comparative analysis of the principles, tradition, and powers associated with legislative capability in South Africa and Nigeria. The chapters explore constitutional provisions and analyze the capacity of each legislature to function within its respective political environment. The book also examines the process and challenges associated with the various measures and mechanisms available for legislatures to ensure accountability in the two countries. Researchers, scholars and students of African politics will find this book useful in their understanding of the problems associated with the simmering governance crisis in South Africa and Nigeria.
