Описание: Jonathan Boulter offers the reader a way of understanding Beckett`s presentation of the human, more precisely, posthuman, subject in his short prose.
Описание: Drawing on private correspondence and little known documents, published and unpublished, Pilling explores every aspect of the More Pricks Than Kicks short story collection. From its publishing history to why they were written, Pilling reveals Beckett's conflicted feelings about the 'compromise' of writing short stories and his struggle to find a voice distinct from James Joyce, his friend and authority of the form. By discussing each story as separate entity, in a grouping that deviates from the collection, and by analysing 'Echo's Bones', Pilling makes new comparisons and contrasts, illustrating Beckett's idiosyncratic handling of the form. Making sure to place the stories in the context of the post-war work, this early study of Beckett highlights the years and work central to his development as a writer.

Описание: This book considers how Samuel Beckett`s critical essays, dialogues and reflections drew together longstanding philosophical discourses about the nature of representation, and fostered crucial, yet overlooked, connections between these discourses and his fiction and poetry.

Описание:
Company was first composed in English over two years, with Beckett breaking a 20-year-long pattern of composing primarily in French to craft this meticulously structured 59-paragraph masterpiece of his late prose. Its French companion, Compagnie, was translated in only two weeks.
The genetic critical analysis of the manuscripts of Company/Compagnie takes this schema-dependent compositional method as its core focus. It forwards a new hypothesis regarding the genetic map of both works, and considers the relationship between this uniquely entwined 'original' and 'translation.' This volume is part of the Beckett Digital Manuscript Project (BDMP), a collaboration between the Centre for Manuscript Genetics (University of Antwerp, Belgium), the Beckett International Foundation (University of Reading, UK) and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Centre (University of Texas at Austin, USA), with the support of the Estate of Samuel Beckett.

Описание: This book places sex and sexuality firmly at the heart of Beckett. From the earliest prose to the late plays, Paul Stewart uncovers a profound mistrust of procreation which nevertheless allows for a surprising variety of non-reproductive forms of sex which challenge established notions of sexual propriety and identity politics.

Описание: Samuel Beckett`s work is deeply concerned with physical contact - remembered, half-remembered, or imagined. Applying the philosophical writings of Jean-Luc Nancy and Maurice Merleau-Ponty that feature sensation, this study examines how Beckett`s later work dramatizes moments of contact between self and self, self and world, and self and other.

Описание: This book, first published in 1993, is the first full-length analysis of Samuel Beckett`s later drama in the context of contemporary critical and performance theory. It employs a close, textual examination of the later plays as a springboard for exploring ideas around authority, gender and the ideology of performance.

Описание: Samuel Beckett’s short play Play / Comedie and his only film Film were written around the same time (1962-1963). They both have self-referential titles that invite meditation on the genres they represent. Although medium-specific opportunities and challenges underlie their very different geneses, they have influenced each other in terms of both form and content. In more ways than one, Film continues where Play left off. Whereas in Play the genesis shows a steady increase in speech tempo to the point of near unintelligibility, the silent Film radically eliminates speech from the outset. Conversely, the cinematic element is also clearly present in Play , notably in the crucial role assigned to the light beam as the mechanical, mindless inquisitor. Both works are grounded in technology and rely heavily on explanatory notes for the members of their production teams, thus exposing the inherently collaborative nature of such projects. The genetic critical analysis of the manuscripts of Play / Comedie and Film not only contributes to the interpretation of each work separately but also considers the two works together through the prism of Beckett’s multimedial authorship.

Описание:
For years the novel Watt has been overlooked or explained away in the most cursory fashion by scholars and critics who have otherwise paid the most scrupulous attention to the rest of Samuel Beckett's work. Now, Gottfried B ttner, a philosopher as well as a physician trained in psychology, offers a penetrating analysis of the work's narrative form and a convincing interpretation of Watt's journey.
B ttner interprets Watt through hermeneutic analysis in order to demonstrate the metaconscious state of being which he believes is central not only to this novel, but also to Beckett's oeuvre. B ttner's method combines a biographical, psychological, and anthropological approach. He offers an exegesis of the narrative form and moves to a convincing interpretation of Watt's journey as the Lebenswanderung from birth to death and back to birth into the unknown. His analysis reveals that in Watt Beckett sought to unveil the hidden experience of a soul suffering under the ordeal of birth and death, and even under an ordeal of rebirth. A kind of soul-wandering, a metamorphosis of the spirit, has thus been made clear for the reader in the figure of Watt in Beckett's novel.
B ttner's work is informed not only by his far-reaching literary interests but by his twenty years of intellectual friendship with Beckett. Their correspondence has touched upon questions of translation, philological intent, and interpretation of the text. While Beckett made it clear that he would not explicate his writings and would insist that text and exegesis stand separately, his degree of interest in B ttner's work is unparalleled.
