Описание:

What does Heideggers controversial notion of the Event mean? Can it be read as an historical prophecy connected to his political affinity with Nazism? And what has this concept to do with the possibility of a new beginning for Western philosophy after Schelling and Nietzsche?

This book highlights the theoretical affinity between the results of Schellings speculations and Heideggers later theories. Heidegger dedicated a seminar to Schellings Philosophical Investigations into the Essence of Human Freedom in 1927-28, immediately after the publication of his Sein und Zeit. He then returned to this work during the courses he taught in 1936 and again in 1941, with lectures dedicated to the Metaphysics of German Idealism. Heideggers introduction of the Event is reminiscent of Schellings effort to think of being in its organic connection to time, and is such a new form of Schellings positive philosophy.

Thanks to a concept of being intimately linked to that of time, these latter of Heideggers theories culminate in a form of positive, historical philosophy as well as with a definition of a post-metaphysical Absolute that, in close connection with primal Nothingness, is beyond any form of onto-theology. It also reveals close connections to Nietzsches introduction of the eternal recurrence, which rethinks being as a never-ending becoming.

Описание: F.W.J. Schelling (1775-1854) stands alongside J.G. Fichte and G.W.F. Hegel as one of the great philosophers of the German idealist tradition. The Schelling Readerintroduces students to Schelling's philosophy by guiding them through the first ever English-language anthology of his key texts-an anthology which showcases the vast array of his interests and concerns (metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of nature, ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of religion and mythology, and political philosophy). The reader includes the most important passages from all of Schelling's major works as well as lesser-known yet illuminating lectures and essays, revealing a philosopher rigorously and boldly grappling with some of the most difficult philosophical problems for over six decades, and constantly modifying and correcting his earlier thought in light of new insights.

Schelling's evolving philosophies have often presented formidable challenges to the teaching of his thought. For the first time, The Schelling Readerarranges readings from his work thematically, so as to bring to the fore the basic continuity in his trajectory, as well as the varied ways he tackles perennial problems. Each of the twelve chapters includes sustained readings that span the whole of Schelling's career, along with explanatory notes and an editorial introduction that introduces the main themes, arguments, and questions at stake in the text. The Editors' Introduction to the volume as a whole also provides important details on the context of Schelling's life and work to help students effectively engage with the material.

Описание: A study of the genesis of Schelling's philosophy of nature and absolute idealism, highlighting the importance of A. C. A. Eschenmayer

  • The first extended English-language treatment of K. A. Eschenmayer's philosophy, particularly his influential innovations in the philosophy of nature and his doctrine of the potencies
  • Includes explanatory notes and a substantial historical Introduction that situates them in context
  • Translations include Eschenmayer's Propositions on the Metaphysics of Nature, his Highest Principle of Philosophy of Nature and Schelling's On the True Concept of Philosophy of Nature, plus correspondence between Eschenmayer and Schelling from 1799 to 1801
  • Comments in detail on key concepts in Schelling's philosophy and German Idealism more broadly, such as identity, drive, potency, the quantity/quality relation and abstraction
  • Considers the transition from Schelling's early philosophy of nature to his philosophy of identity

During the first decade of the 19th century, F. W. J. Schelling was involved in 3 distinct controversies with one of his most perceptive and provocative critics, A. C. A. Eschenmayer. The first of these controversies took place in 1801 and focused on the philosophy of nature. Now, Berger and Whistler provide a ground-breaking account of this moment in the history of philosophy. They argue that key Schellingian concepts, such as identity, potency and abstraction, were first forged in his early debate with Eschenmayer. Through a series of translations and commentaries, they show that the 1801 controversy is an essential resource for understanding Schelling's thought, the philosophy of nature and the origins of absolute idealism.

Additionally, Berger and Whistler demonstrate how the Schelling-Eschenmayer controversy raises important issues for the philosophy of nature today, including questions about the relation between identity and difference and the possibility of explaining sensible qualities in terms of quantity. This ultimately leads to the formulation of the most basic methodological question for the philosophy of nature: must this philosophy be based upon a prior consideration of consciousness - as Eschenmayer insists - or might it simply begin with nature itself? By arguing for the latter position, Schelling challenges us to entertain the possibility that the philosophy of nature is first philosophy.

Описание: Charlotte Alderwick presents Schelling’s ontology as fundamentally power-based. She demonstrates that this ontology enables his unique conception of human freedom outlined in the 'Freedom' essay. This distinctive reading demonstrates that Schelling’s power-based ontology can usefully problematise and supplement contemporary work on power-based ontologies. First, where current work focuses on powers in relation to specific areas of metaphysics, Schelling provides a holistic picture, encompassing these areas into a single ontological story. Secondly, engagement with Schelling’s work points to problems (and to possible solutions) that will arise for any power-based metaphysics, but have not been examined in the literature.

Описание:

This unique volume collects more than 30 new essays by prominent scholars on what remains philosophically provocative in Heidegger's thought. His writings continue to invite analysis and application -- ut, particularly in the light of his political affiliations, they must also be critiqued. Philosophy today takes place after Heidegger in that his views should not be accepted naively, and there are new issues that he did not address -- but also in that we continue to think in the wake of important questions that he raised. The contributors to this volume ask questions such as: - What does it mean to think "after" Heidegger? - What is valuable in his early work on finite existence, and in his early and late phenomenology? - What is the root of his political errors? Are there still elements in his thought that can yield helpful political insights? - Should we emulate his turn toward "releasement"? - Can he help us understand the postmodern condition? Readers will find thought-provoking echoes and points of contention among these engaging and lively essays.

Описание: This is the first major effort to systematically organise and evaluate Schelling’s arguments for a Philosophy of Revelation and to demonstrate their importance for contemporary debates in speculative realism, new realism and post-secularism. Schelling’s decisionism has long been recognised as the historical root of European existentialism, but has never been properly explained as a philosophical strategy. According to McGrath, Schelling’s turn to the real is neither fideistic nor absurdist, but the consequence of the free decision of the philosopher who has soberly assessed the results of logic, nature-philosophy and epistemology.
