Описание: Candace Slater's new book focuses on narratives concerning Fray Leopoldo de Alpandeire (1864-1956), a Capuchin friar from Granada and probably the most popular nonconsecrated saint today in all of Spain. In tracing the emergence of a group of contemporary legends about Fray Leopoldo, Slater discusses both the stories she tape-recorded in the streets of Granada and the friar's official biography. She underscores the essential pluralism of the tales, their undercurrent of resistance to institutional authority, and their deep concern for the relationship between past and present. Bearing witness to the subtlety and resilience of even the most apparently conservative folk-literary forms, these stories are not only about the role of saints and miracles in an increasingly secular and industrial society but, first and foremost, also about the legacy of the Franco years. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1990.
Описание: Granada, the city of the Alhambra Palace and the last Moorish kingdom of Andalucia, has a special place in our imagination, whether we have visited it or not. As well as being a city of exceptional beauty and interest, it is a symbol for all of us of what happens when different civilizations meet. That is why "Granada, City of My Dreams", in the words of the author, was written not only as a guide but as "a book about Granada for the nun in Norway sitting in her armchair and wishing to travel there in the mind".For, what fascinates us about this universal city is not only its monuments but its marvellous story, "the encounter between Moor and Christian, gypsy and Jew, medieval and Renaissance, glistening snow and Mediterranean sun, in this green balcony of Europe overlooking the naked shores of Africa". Lawrence Bohme, poet, illustrator and curious traveller, has filled these pages with luminous descriptions and drawings, the culmination of forty years of wanderings through the palaces and labyrinths of his adopted homeland, Granada.Things about Granada you can find in this book...A history of Granada / Mirador de San Crist bal and San Miguel Alto / Cathedral quarter / Plaza de Bibarrambla / Mercado de San Agust n / chumbos, caracoles and chirimoyas / Corral del Carb n / Alcaicer a / Madraza / Royal Chapel / Cathedral / Sagrario / the heroic feat of Hern n del Pulgar / Gran V a de Col n / the sons of the sugar beet / Albaicin / The Gate of Paradise / Calderer a to San Nicol s / Placeta de Carvajales / Minaret of San Jos / Plaza de San Miguel Bajo / Palace of King Badis / Cuesta de la Lona / Palace of Dar al-Horra / Convent of Santa Isabel la Real / View from San Nicol s / from San Nicol s to Plaza Larga / from Plaza Larga down Cuesta de la Alhacaba to Puerta de Elvira / Hospital Real / Saint John of God and the Triumph of the Virgin / Plaza Nueva / Casa de Pisa / River Darro and its bridges / El Ba uelo - the Bath / Convents of Zafra and Concepci n / Casa de Castril / Paseo de los Tristes / Sacromonte / San Juan de los Reyes / Alhambra / Alhambra Alta / Monastery of San Francisco / Church of Santa Mar a de la Alhambra and the two monks / Puerta del Vino - Gate of Wine / Alcazaba / Palace of Carlos Quinto / Nasrid Palaces / a brief history of al-Andalus, from the Visigoths to the Catholic Monarchs / Mexuar and its oratory / Cuarto Dorado / Tower of Comares / The Hall of Power / Courtyard of the Lions / Hall of Abencerrajes / Hall of the Kings - Sala de los Reyes / Hall of the Two Sisters / Sala de camas - the Bath / Rooms of Carlos Quinto / Tocador de la Reina - Queen's Dressing Room / Partal, Torre de las Damas and the Mosque / The four towers / Generalife / Hill of the Martyrs / Torres Bermejas / Saint John of the Cross / Casa de Manuel de Falla / Realejo / Campo del Pr ncipe / Church of Santo Domingo / Casa de los Tiros / Vestiges and ghosts of the old Granada / Puerta Real / Palace of Bibataub n / Plaza del Campillo, Calle Ganivet and the old "Manigua" / Calle Recogidas, and the convent which gave it its name / The uncloistered fountains of San Agust n and La Trinidad / Street of the Boards and Street of the Little Bridges / Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo / The Green Bridge and "French Granada" / Ermita de San Sebasti n / Alc zar Genil / Puerta de San Lorenzo, the gate that got lost / Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo / Acequia Gorda and Paseo de las Palmas / Epilogue - What became of the Moors of Granada? / some other pieces / Aben Humeya and the War of the Alpujarra / The Queen and the gypsies / The King's Jews / The multiple origins of "marrano" / Moro, mud jar and morisco.
Creating Christian Granada provides a richly detailed examination of a critical and transitional episode in Spain's march to global empire. The city of Granada—Islam's final bastion on the Iberian peninsula—surrendered to the control of Spain's "Catholic Monarchs" Isabella and Ferdinand on January 2, 1492. Over the following century, Spanish state and Church officials, along with tens of thousands of Christian immigrant settlers, transformed the formerly Muslim city into a Christian one. With constant attention to situating the Granada case in the broader comparative contexts of the medieval reconquista tradition on the one hand and sixteenth-century Spanish imperialism in the Americas on the other, Coleman carefully charts the changes in the conquered city's social, political, religious, and physical landscapes. In the process, he sheds light on the local factors contributing to the emergence of tensions between the conquerors and Granada's formerly Muslim, "native" morisco community in the decades leading up to the crown-mandated expulsion of most of the city's moriscos in 1569–1570.Despite the failure to assimilate the moriscos, Granada's status as a frontier Christian community under construction fostered among much of the immigrant community innovative religious reform ideas and programs that shaped in direct ways a variety of church-wide reform movements in the era of the ecumenical Council of Trent (1545–1563). Coleman concludes that the process by which reforms of largely Granadan origin contributed significantly to transformations in the Church as a whole forces a reconsideration of traditional "top-down" conceptions of sixteenth-century Catholic reform.

Описание: "They call me Mama-cat and I answer to it, so I suppose that is my name, though it wasn't always. I was born in Andalusia, southern Spain, in Granada, an area that is hot in summer and cold in winter, and I survived thanks to the ingenuity of my mother, who hid me in a deserted house along with the brothers and sisters of my litter." So begins the picaresque, picturesque tale, true in the telling by its feline protagonist. She describes her neighborhood, of streets piled upward upon streets, the old city on the hill, with its labyrinth of narrow winding lanes, the Albaic n's spectacular vistas and crumbling Arabic abodes, The tourists, passers-by, thieves and outcasts, donkeys and dogs. If in need of inspiration, we could gaze at the graceful Alhambra overlooking our vicinity, with the serene Sierra Nevada mountains behind. A diverse collection of original paintings and illustrations accompanies the text, at times literally putting the reader into the picture as the yarn unfolds. Included are cultural images. "From the time I was adopted my context was one of belonging. I might say that I began to enjoy novel feelings of security, pleasure, and, yes, happiness. I even started to purr, the involuntary sound of which- a softly vibrant erupting rumble- astonished me." A worldly-wise versatile feline, Mama-cat is part philosopher and quite well-versed culturally, especially where cats are concerned, She enjoys quoting notables, such as Mark Twain, who asserted unequivocally, 'If a man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve the man but deteriorate the cat.' Or... "'Do you see that kitten chasing so prettily her own tail? If you look with her eyes, you might see her surrounded with hundreds of figures performing complex dramas, with tragic and comic issues, long conversations, many characters, many ups and downs of fate.' So said Ralph Waldo Emerson." Apropos of Emerson's statement, Mama-cat does indeed render her colorful world visible, depicting its grandeur and pettiness, portraying its various and sundry inhabitants, bringing its sounds and sensations to vivid life. We are Mama-cat. We suffer her sadness. Feel her fears and frustrations. Delight in her joys. If one has ever looked in a mirror hung on a wall across the room from another mirror, the reflections issue from one another intriguingly, ad infinitum, in ostensible layers of reality. In a similar sense, Mama-cat not only relates her own chronicle, but that of her "lady" as well. Tragedies like the loss of her kittens and periods of deep despair echo those her mistress undergoes in seeming synchronicity. She plumbs her experiences for profounder meanings and reverberations, sharing her reflections and musings, including local Art, History, Literary figures, her own life and that of her lady, of how deeply they share a mysterious, magical unity. The great affection she and the lady hold for one another rises above all and dissolves the distinctions of their species. For she also realizes herself as part of a whole web of realities of cause and effect... something far greater than the mere creature she was born as in the form of a cat. "If there is any impression I would wish my autobiography to engender, with those readers who have remained throughout, it may be that there are deep dimensions of love which resonate eternally- bonds of connectedness that even death cannot destroy." And, ultimately, the cycle continues... for, in the end, ..". the waves of life and death roll on, as they have for thousands of years and shall for thousands more ..." This full color book, with more than 60 illustrations, is surely a 'must read' for all lovers of lost heritage enclaves, be it Spain or elsewhere, as well as cats.

Описание:
Father Antonio wasn't the first priest to take up with a beautiful Indian girl on a secluded island near Granada, Nicaragua. He wasn't the first priest to have a library of banned books either. But it's too much for the Church when he tries to protect an Indian holy site from zealots who want to destroy it.
He escapes on the day he is to be burned for heresy and is chased across the Spanish Main by agents of the Inquisition, English pirates, and bounty hunters. He's determined to return to Nicaragua and destroy the evil men who murdered his Indian wife and children, and nothing is going to stop him--not his pursuers, not hurricanes or sea battles or a Gypsy ghost. Not natives with flaming arrows either, or a villainous pirate named Vampire Jack.
Things get complicated when he saves an Irish beauty named Molly from the pirates. Molly has secrets, like the Englishman who loves her and a chest of stolen gold. The pirates want her back, but Father Antonio isn't about to give her up. He's in love..., and the chase continues.
