Now available in an attractive paperback, Modernists and Mavericks is Martin Gayford's impressively researched and well-reviewed chronicle of postwar London painting.
Modernists and Mavericks explores the development of painting in London from the Second World War to the 1970s based on an exceptionally deep well of firsthand interviews, with artists such as Victor Pasmore, John Craxton, Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, Allen Jones, R. B. Kitaj, Euan Uglow, Howard Hodgkin, Terry Frost, Gillian Ayres, Bridget Riley, David Hockney, Frank Bowling, Leon Kossoff, John Hoyland, and Patrick Caulfield. Gayford also teases out the thread weaving these individual lives together and demonstrates how and why, long after it was officially declared dead, painting lived and thrived in London. Simultaneously aware of the influences of Jackson Pollock, Alberto Giacometti, and the traditions of Western art, from Piero della Francesca to Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, the postwar painters were bound together by their confidence that this ancient medium could do fresh and marvelous things, and their urge to explore, in their diverse ways, the possibilities of paint.

Описание: In this twelfth collection of essays and reviews Jim Burns looks back to the 1930s and the problems faced by some writers of the period. Novelists such as Dawn Powell, Charles Reznikoff, and Tess Slesinger are spotlighted. Two writers, Denys Val Baker and Norman Levine, who lived in St Ives when it was a hotbed of creative activity, have their work analysed, with specific reference to the novels and stories they wrote about the artistic community in the town. More painters are dealt with in essays about John Nash, Modigliani, and the four Scottish Colourists, Peploe, Caddell, Hunter, and Fergusson. The Beats appear in essays about the little magazines that featured them, Gary Snyder, and American expatriates in Mexico in the 1950s. Music has its place in reviews of books about Dave Brubeck and Jazz from Detroit. And there is an evaluation of the pleasures of British music hall and its personalities. Banned writers, a busted bookseller, and events in the histories of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, not to mention Paris and London, go to complete the picture.

Описание: The Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) is a global, not-for profit association of banks, solution providers, consultancy companies, integrators and academic partners with the shared aim of defining a semantic standard for the banking industry covering almost all the well-known architectural layers. The BIAN was formed in 2008 by a group of banks and solution providers with the shared aim of defining a semantic Service Operation standard for the financial services industry. At a later stage other standards bodies, like ISO and IFX, joined along with some academic partners. BIAN`s expectation is that a standard definition of business functions and service interactions that describe the general construct of any bank will be of significant benefit to the industry. When compared to an increasing number of proprietary designs, a dedicated industry standard, like BIAN, provides the following main benefits:¢ It enables the more efficient and effective development and integration of software solutions for and between banks;¢ It significantly lowers the overall integration costs;¢ It improves the operational efficiency within and between banks and provides the opportunity for greater solution and capability re-use within and among banks;¢ It supports the current need for more industry integration and collaboration through the usage of (open) APIs;¢ It supports the adoption of more flexible business service sourcing models and enhances the evolution and adoption of shared third party business services;¢ It supports FinTechs and RegTechs to gain an easy insight in the complex financial services industry structure. This book is intended for those enterprise, business and solution architects in the financial services industry (FSI) who are interested in applying the BIAN Industry Standard in their organization. It will provide readers with in-depth knowledge to help them understand the full construct of BIAN artifacts, how to apply them and how they can contribute to help the BIAN standard fulfill their (organization`s) needs. The authors of the book expect the readers to have an in-depth knowledge of IT architectural principles and methodologies. Описание: Modernism's most contentious rivals, James Joyce and D. H. Lawrence, were polar opposites--stylistically, personally, and professionally--yet their lives, works, and careers bear striking similarities. They shared the same literary agent, published in the same literary magazines, fought legal battles against censorship, and were both pirated by Samuel Roth. This is the first book to explore the resonances between the two writers, shattering the historical silence between Joyceans and Lawrentians. The parallels run deep between these epic figures of the literary canon, and this volume explores the classic modernist paradoxes shared by the two writers. Both were at once syncretists and shatterers, bourgeois cosmopolitans, prudish libertines, displaced nostalgists, and rebels against their native lands. Considering mutual themes such as gender, class, horseracing, nature, religion, exile, and modernism's fascination with Egyptology, these essays highlight the many intersections in the major novels and short fiction of Joyce and Lawrence. Modernists at Odds is a long overdue extended comparison of two of the most compelling writers of the twentieth century.

Описание: Focussing upon both canonical figures such as Woolf, Eliot, Pound, and Stein and emergent themes such as Christian modernism, intermedial modernism, queer Harlem Renaissance, this volume brings together previously unseen materials, from various archives, to bear upon cutting-edge interpretation of modernism. It provides an overview of approaches to modernism via the employment of various types of primary source material: correspondence, manuscripts and drafts, memoirs and production notes, reading notes and marginalia, and all manner of useful contextualising sources like news reports or judicial records.
While having much to say to literary criticism more broadly, this volume is closely focused upon key modernist figures and emergent themes in light of the discipline’s 'archival turn' – termed in a unifying introduction ‘achivalism’.
An essential ingredient separating the above, recent tendency from a much older and better-established new historicism, in modernist studies at least, is that 'the literary canon' remains an important starting point. Whereas new historicism 'is interested in history as represented and recorded in written documents' and tends toward a 'parallel study of literature and non-literary texts', archival criticism tends toward recognised, oftentimes canonical or critically-lauded, writers, presented in Part 1. Sidestepping the vicissitudes of canon formation, manuscript scholars tend to gravitate toward leading modernist authors: James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, T.S. Eliot and Samuel Beckett. Part of the reason is obvious: known authors frequently leave behind sizeable literary estates, which are then acquired by research centres. A second section then applies the same empirical methodology to key or emergent themes in the study of modernism, including queer modernism; spatial modernism; little magazines (and online finding aids structuring them); and the role of faith and/or emotions in the construction of ‘modernism’ as we know it.
