Описание: In response to the sense of crisis in today's towns the proponents of new traditionalism offer a form of urban planning which looks back to more traditional styles whilst firmly integrating the requirements of modern life. Their designs are characterised by a sense of public spirit, identification and order. The contributions in this book reveal how these principles relate to the specific European city in the 20th century as well as to the writings of theoreticians from Camillo Sitte up to Rem Koolhaas. The authors reveal why the provocatively conservative approach has enjoyed so much success. They draw comparisons with the New Urbanism found in the USA and develop a systematic approach to town planning. The examples from the Krier Kohl office demonstrate in detail the design process up to the architectural realization by architects such as Michael Graves and Cesar Pelli. They show that new traditionalism in urban planning can fruitfully work together with a wide range of architectural approaches.

Описание: This book challenges the perception that shaping neighborhoods and districts is a top down benevolent activity by inspired planners; rather, the book sees this activity as a constant resolution of tensions or friction that citizens experience and the physical city structure exhibits. Out of this pragmatic dialectic emerge 'patters' which, when applied and codified, respond to inevitably semi-permanent regional cultural realities. These patterns endure until a new culture, understood as the sum total of all human activity of production, provision, defense and exchange, appears to take hold. A new cycle of adaptation and mutations sets in until the fresh tensions and frictions are resolved. In this constant spiral of evolutionary readjustment, this book adds a new pattern--the Fused Grid--that resolves contemporary pressure points such as citizen health, well-being, multi-modal mobility, Green House Gas emissions, water preservation, alienating anonymity and traffic safety. By synthesizing piece-meal responses, it creates a unified, complete, contemporary model that displaces the ones in current vogue that are taken for granted. This new pattern rests on cutting-edge theoretical and empirical studies each of which examined special aspects of current stresses, induced or endured by citizens or their environment. It catalyzes much of this available research around the poles of neighborhood and district network configurations that produce a fully functional and enjoyable contemporary city environment while minding its environmental footprint. To substantiate its strengths, the book examines case studies where the potential for the model to deliver on its intended outcomes becomes fully evident. This book is a worthy, stimulating read for every planner and advocate of well-functioning, healthy communities.

Описание:
City Logistics: Mapping The Future examines the key concepts of city logistics along with the associated implementation issues, methodologies, and policy measures. Chronicling the growth of city logistics as a discipline and how planning and policy have improved practice over the last ten years, it details the technologies, policies, and plans that can reduce traffic congestion, environmental impact, and the cost of logistics activities in urban freight transportation systems.
The book provides a comprehensive study of the modelling, planning, and evaluation of urban freight transport. It includes case studies from the US, UK, Netherlands, Japan, South Africa, and Australia that illustrate the experiences of cities that have already implemented city logistics, including the methods used to solve the complex issues relating to urban freight transport.
Presents procedures for evaluating city logistics policy measures
Provides an overview of intelligent transport systems in city logistics
Highlights the essential features of joint delivery systems and off-hour delivery programs
Supplies an overview of access restrictions and regulations related to city logistics in urban areas
Expert contributors from major cities around the world discuss regional developments, share success stories and personal experiences, and highlight emerging trends in urban logistics. Coverage includes mathematical modeling, public policy planning and implementation, logistics in urban planning designs, and urban distribution centers.
The book examines the impact of recent advancements in technology on city logistics, including information and communication technologies, intelligent transport systems, and GPS. In Constructive Feminism, Daphne Spain examines the deliberate and unintended spatial consequences of feminism's second wave, a social movement dedicated to reconfiguring power relations between women and men. Placing the women's movement of the 1970s in the context of other social movements that have changed the use of urban space, Spain argues that reform feminists used the legal system to end the mandatory segregation of women and men in public institutions, while radical activists created small-scale places that gave women the confidence to claim their rights to the public sphere.Women’s centers, bookstores, health clinics, and domestic violence shelters established feminist places for women’s liberation in Boston, Los Angeles, and many other cities. Unable to afford their own buildings, radicals adapted existing structures to serve as women’s centers that fostered autonomy, health clinics that promoted reproductive rights, bookstores that connected women to feminist thought, and domestic violence shelters that protected their bodily integrity. Legal equal opportunity reforms and daily practices of liberation enhanced women’s choices in education and occupations. Once the majority of wives and mothers had joined the labor force, by the mid-1980s, new buildings began to emerge that substituted for the unpaid domestic tasks once performed in the home. Fast food franchises, childcare facilities, adult day centers, and hospices were among the inadvertent spatial consequences of the second wave.

Описание: Urban Spaces in Japan explores the workings of power, money and the public interest in the planning and design of Japanese space. Through a set of vivid case studies of well-known Japanese cities including Tokyo, Kobe, and Kyoto, this book examines the potential of civil society in contemporary planning debates. Further, it addresses the implications of Japan's biggest social problem – the demographic decline – for Japanese cities, and demonstrates the serious challenges and exciting possibilities that result from the impending end of Japan's urban growth. Presenting a synthetic approach that reflects both the physical aspects and the social significance of urban spaces, this book scrutinizes the precise patterns of urban expansion and shrinkage. In doing so, it also summarizes current theories of public space, urban space, and the body in space which are relevant to both Japan and the wider international debate. With detailed case studies and more general reflections from a broad range of disciplines, this collection of essays demonstrates the value of cross-disciplinary cooperation. As such, it is of interest to students and scholars of geography and urban planning as well as history, anthropology and cultural studies.
