What defines the boundary between fact and fabrication, fiction and nonfiction, literature and journalism? Latin American Documentary Narratives unpacks the precarious testimonial relationship between author and subject, where the literary journalist, rather than the subject being interviewed, can become the hero of a narrative in its recording and retelling.
Latin American Documentary Narratives covers a variety of nonfiction genres from the 1950s to the 2000s that address topics such as social protests, dictatorships, natural disasters, crime and migration in Latin America. This book analyzes – and includes an appendix of interviews with – authors who have not previously been critically read together, from the early and emblematic works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Elena Poniatowska to more recent authors, like Leila Guerriero and Juan Villoro, who are currently reshaping media and audiences in Latin America. In a world overwhelmed by data production and marked by violent acts against those considered 'others', Liliana Chavez Diaz argues that storytelling plays an essential role in communication among individuals, classes and cultures.
Описание: Drawing upon original research and interviews as well as professional experience and a large body of literature, this book provides a foundation for instruction librarians and collection librarians to begin exploring the intersections of their work as well as practical suggestions and ideas for building upon that foundation through implementation.

Описание: An eclectic collection of 19 essays, conversations and reports intended to reach beyond regions and compartamentalized disciplines. They encompass the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and the arts. The book hopes to broaden the horizons of what we call ‘The Caribbean’ both geographically and intellectually. Included are Harvey Neptune’s re-evaluation of CLR James’ American Civilization as a book that foretold the rise of a populist autocratic leader in the US long before Trump. Christopher Laird provides a revealing outline of Banyan holdings, the largest cultural archive in the Caribbean while Heather Cateau explores the 400- year old links between Connecticut and the Caribbean. The notion of the Caribbean as a ‘new Mediterranean’ is examined by Gary Reger and Honduran historian Dario Euraque traces references to Afro-origins in Central American curricula. Tony Hall argues for recognition of Marcus and Amy Garvey in societies ranging from Jamaica and Costa Rica to the US. The collection also includes Pablo Delano’s installation The Museum of the Old Colony and a conversation with Trinidad masman artist Peter Minshall. Essays also focus on Hindu, Moslem and Afro-Caribbean women in the Diaspora and on the difficulties facing LGBTQ communities in the Caribbean and the US. Other authors compare the UK Leeds carnival with that of Trinidad and on the importance of David Rudder’s Cricket Chronicles as cultural documents.

Описание: The contributors to Media Crossroads examine space and place in media as they intersect with sexuality, race, ethnicity, age, class, and ability. Considering a wide range of film, television, video games, and other media, the authors show how spaces—from the large and fantastical to the intimate and virtual—are shaped by the social interactions and intersections staged within them. The highly teachable essays include analyses of media representations of urban life and gentrification, the ways video games allow users to adopt an experiential understanding of space, the intersection of the regulation of bodies and spaces, and how style and aesthetics can influence intersectional thinking. Whether interrogating the construction of Portland as a white utopia in Portlandia or the link between queerness and the spatial design and gaming mechanics in the Legend of Zelda video game series, the contributors deepen understanding of screen cultures in ways that redefine conversations around space studies in film and media.

Описание: Intersections: A Contemporary Student Primer on Race, Gender, and Class provides students with an illuminating and timely collection of articles pertaining to these key social issues in American history and contemporary culture. Students learn how to recognize the intersections of race, gender, and class, how to navigate these intersections in academic and personal pursuits, and how to serve as change agents for social justice. The anthology is divided into four units: theoretical foundations, historical perspectives, American culture, and contemporary moments. In Unit 1, students read selections that introduce Black feminist thought and shed light on income disparity. Unit 2 includes readings that examine labor and race relations in American history and culture. The articles in Unit 3 focus on American popular culture and competing standards of beauty. The final unit offers selections that explore the politics of constructions of womanhood, manhood, motherhood, and fatherhood through the lens of the Obama White House. Each reading is supported by pre-reading questions that inspire critical thinking and self-reflection, as well as post-reading questions that challenge deeper analysis concerning issues of power and empowerment. A diverse collection of current scholarship, Intersections is well suited for courses in history, politics, economics, sociology, gender studies, ethnic studies, and popular culture.
In the late 1960s, the feminist scholar Kate Millet broadly defined »politics« as arrangements of power which enable individuals collectively to assert authority over others. Taking this definition, case studies by scholars from Europe and Israel explore the gendered professional in the 20th century as she navigated arrangements of power-including organised religion, emancipation movements, cultural norms, and shifting forms of government-to practice architecture. Additional contributions reflect upon power structures in contemporary architectural education, practice, and history to propose other means of architectural knowledge, representation, and professional activity.
The combined experience of authors throughout the ages offers a wealth of valuable information about the practice of creative writing. However, such lore can also be problematic for students and practitioners as it can be inherently additive, making it difficult to abandon processes that do not work. This adherence to lore also tends to be a US-centric endeavor. In order to take a nuanced approach to the uses and limitations of lore, The Place and the Writer offers a global perspective on creative writing pedagogy that has yet to be fully explored. Featuring a diverse array of cultural viewpoints from Brazil to Hong Kong, Finland to South Africa, this book explores the ongoing international debate about the best approaches for teaching and practicing creative writing.
Marshall Moore and Sam Meekings challenge areas of perceived wisdom that persist in the field of creative writing, including aesthetics and politics in institutionalized creative writing; the process of workshopping; tuition and talent; anxiety in the classroom; unifying theory and lore; and teaching creative writing in languages other than English.
