The people survived under the domes, but they felt like prisoners, like the trees in the Tree Museums. With humanity isolated under glass, a funny thing happened... the world began to heal. Humanity, and especially the Bald-Headed Suiters, were like a virus, sickening the planet. The animals, including Gus the tortoise, noticed the change and went to work rebuilding the forests... their homes that were devastated by the fires of global warming. As the new forests grew, the Suiters dreamt of rebuilding their cities and reestablishing their dominance over nature, setting the stage for an epic struggle between the animals and the Suiters. While the subject of migration has received enormous attention in academic journals and books across the social sciences, introductory texts on the matter are few and far between. Even fewer books have explored migration through a critical and explicit engagement with spatial concepts.
Now in its second edition, Migration remains the only text in more than a decade that emphasizes how geographical or spatial concepts can be used critically to understand migration. The multi-disciplinary text draws on insights from human geography, political science, social anthropology, sociology, and to a lesser extent economics. All of the chapters focus on key terms, theories, concepts, and issues concerning migration and immigration. The book argues that in the context of migration, two opposing 'spatial positions' have emerged in the wake of the critique of 'methodological nationalism'. On one hand is the significance of 'transnationalism', and on the other, the importance of 'sub-national' or local processes. Drawing on such primary documents as wills, legal codes, land transactions, litigation records, chronicles, and literary works, Teofilo Ruiz documents the transformation in how medieval Castilians thought about property and family at a time when economic innovations and an emerging mercantile sensibility were eroding the traditional relation between the two. He also identifies changes in how Castilians conceived of and acted on salvation and in the ways they related to their local communities and an emerging nation-state.
Ruiz interprets this reordering of mental and physical landscapes as part of what Le Goff has described as a transition from heaven to earth, from spiritual and religious beliefs to the quasi-secular pursuits of merchants and scholars.
