Описание: What is Violent Communication? If "violent" means acting in ways that result in hurt or harm, then much of how we communicate--judging others, bullying, having racial bias, blaming, finger pointing, discriminating, speaking without listening, criticizing others or ourselves, name-calling, reacting when angry, using political rhetoric, being defensive or judging who's "good/bad" or what's "right/wrong" with people--could indeed be called "violent communication." What is Nonviolent Communication?Nonviolent Communication is the integration of four things: - Consciousness: a set of principles that support living a life of compassion, collaboration, courage, and authenticity
- Language: understanding how words contribute to connection or distance
- Communication: knowing how to ask for what we want, how to hear others even in disagreement, and how to move toward solutions that work for all
- Means of influence: sharing "power with others" rather than using "power over others" Nonviolent Communication serves our desire to do three things: - Increase our ability to live with choice, meaning, and connection
- Connect empathically with self and others to have more satisfying relationships
- Sharing of resources so everyone is able to benefit
Описание: Until the mid-1960s, most commentators of the Gospel of John were aware of a polemic against 'the Jews,' yet they did not consider it with reference to contemporary ethical discussion. A shift in focus in Johannine scholarship is noticeable from the mid-1960s and 1970s to the present, where commentators began to connect the Gospel's polemic against 'the Jews' with potential anti-Judaism in the text. As yet, very little work has been done to answer the question of how this change in sensitivity came about. This book is a historiography of one scholar's growing awareness of potential anti-Judaism in the Gospel of John with the intention of using this individual history to explain the larger trend in biblical studies. Sonya Cronin examines the published work of Raymond Brown, a prominent Catholic New Testament scholar, between the years 1960-1998. The book contextualizes Brown's work by evaluating the impact of ecclesiastical statements and the influence of earlier and contemporary Johannine scholarship on Brown's biblical interpretation, and then posits theories as to why change occurs at specific times.

Описание: Although we know him primarily as the charismatic author of Treasure Island (1883), Kidnapped (1886), Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), and A Child’s Garden of Verses (1885), Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) began his career as a witty and innovative essayist. This collection includes a selection of fifteen of Stevenson’s most poignant, amusing and personal essays on subjects such as deep-sea diving off the coast of Scotland, child’s play, death, the medieval poet-thief Fran?ois Villon, surreal San Francisco, insomnia, and Stevenson’s quirky enjoyment of “unpleasant places.” An Apology for Idlers and Other Essays includes some of Stevenson’s most beloved pieces and lesser-known works that have long been out of print.Stevenson called himself “a literary vagrant.” His vagabond spirit and self-deprecation transformed the modern essay. Brimming with esoterica and irony, his essays resist the industrious pace of modern life, entrancing the reader with diverting asides, celebrating the lost art of letting our minds wander. “Look at one of your industrious fellows for a moment,” Stevenson beseeches us, “he sows hurry and reaps indigestion.” In our increasingly fast-paced world, Stevenson’s ethic of idleness can feel simultaneously necessary and alien. An Apology for Idlers and Other Essays features an introduction by editor Matthew Kaiser, which provides rich background information on both Stevenson and the titular essay. One of the few scholarly editions of Stevenson’s essays, this meticulously annotated collection is well suited for courses on Stevenson, Scottish literature, late-Victorian literature, life writing, and the art of the essay.

Описание: Nathan R. Byrd was inspired to write No Apology Needed: Learning to Forgive as God Forgives during Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement and forgiveness, in 2012. As he began to research the Jewish perspective of the holiday, he realized that neither Adam nor Eve ever apologized to God for their sin, yet they were forgiven immediately. Byrd offers a new perspective on the concept of forgiveness, with the goal of transforming lives and communities. Exploring the Jewish roots for the Christian faith, he suggests that the practice of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, can offer Christians a rhythm for forgiveness that will have a positive impact on their whole life. By learning to forgive as God does, without needing any apology from those who have wronged us, we can unlock the keys to healing and healthy relationships. Looking at ancient biblical passages in a new light, Byrd reveals what we have been missing about the teachings of Jesus and the character of our God, as seen in the stories of Adam and Eve, Joseph and his brothers, and King Saul and David. In doing so, Byrd offers incredible insights into how we view relationships and the necessity of adopting a posture of forgiveness, regardless of the circumstances.
This book focuses on G. K. Chesterton’s apology for Catholicism in the context of his epoch. It shows how he portrays Catholicism as English and universal at the same time and thus seeks to put an end to its isolation from England's mainstream culture. Organized around four thematic issues (transcendence, mystical materialism, valuation of the childlike, and universality), the book illustrates Chesterton’s case for Catholicism as a case for romance and adventure, and as a challenge to modern modes of thought inimical to Catholic Christianity.

Описание: Explores the legacy of slavery in Black theological terms. Challenging the dominant approaches to the history and legacy of slavery in the British Empire, this book shows that although the 1807 act abolished the slave trade, it did not end racism, notions of White supremacy, or the demonization of Blackness, Black people and Africa.
