Описание: The "Nicomachean Ethics" is one of Aristotle`s most widely read and influential works. Drawing on their intimate knowledge of Aristotle`s thought, the authors have produced an English-language translation of the "Ethics" that is as faithful to the original as it is graceful in its rendering.
Описание: The theme of the Nicomachean Ethics is a Socratic question previously explored in the works of Plato, Aristotle`s friend and teacher, of how men should best live. In his Metaphysics, Aristotle described how Socrates, the friend and teacher of Plato, had turned philosophy to human questions, whereas Pre-Socratic philosophy had only been theoretical

Описание: Many of Aristotle`s claims about virtue of character seem so puzzling that modern philosophers have often discarded or reworked them. This text looks at Aristotle`s claims and shows how they form a thought-provoking ethic of virtue, one that deserves to be developed and refined.

Описание: In this book, Claudia Baracchi demonstrates the indissoluble links between practical and theoretical wisdom in Aristotle`s thinking. Baracchi shows how the theoretical is always informed by a set of practices, and specifically, how one`s encounter with phenomena, the world, or nature in the broadest sense, is always a matter of ethos.
Описание: Accompanied by a new translation of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics X, this volume presents a hybrid between a traditional commentary and a scholarly monograph. Aristotle's text is divided into one hundred lemmata which not only explore comprehensively the content and strength of each of these units of thought, but also emphasise their continuity, showing how the smaller units feed into the larger structure. The Commentary illuminates what Aristotle thinks in each lemma (and why), and also shows how he thinks. In order to bring Aristotle alive as a thinker, it often explores several possible ways of reading the text to enable the reader to make up their own mind about the best interpretation of a given passage. The relevant background in Plato's dialogues is discussed, and a substantial Introduction sets out the philosophical framework necessary for understanding Book X, the final and most arresting section of the Ethics.
The two texts translated in this volume of the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series both compare the happiness of the practical life, which is subject to the hazards of fortune, with the happiness of the life of philosophical contemplation, which is subject to fewer needs.
The first is Michael of Ephesus' 12th-century commentary on Book 10 of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, written (alongside his commentaries on Books 5 and 9) to fill gaps in the Neoplatonists' commentaries from the 6th century. He recognizes that lives of practicality and philosophy may be combined, and gives his own account of the superiority of the contemplative. The second is Themistius' text On Virtue, written in the 4th century AD. He was an important teacher and commentator on Aristotle, an orator and leading civil servant in Constantinople. His philosophical oration is here argued to be written in support of the Emperor Julian's insistence against the misuse of free speech by a Cynic Heraclius, who had satirised him. Julian had previously criticised Themistius but here he combines his political and philosophical roles in seeking to mend relations with his former pupil.

Описание:
Aristotle was a philosopher who lived thousands of years ago, however, his ethical theory has a great deal to offer modern readers. Aristotle's virtue ethics formed the basis of ethical teaching in the Catholic Church and this book offers a simple beginning explanation of some of his key ideas. Virtue is a habit that is acquired through practice. Being honest, hardworking, humble, brave and wise are virtues. To be virtuous, we must always take the moderate path between two extremes. This book is an excellent primer on Aristotle for children.
Описание: This book is the first collection of essays in English devoted solely to the relationship between Aristotle`s ethics and politics. They have in common an appreciation of the relevance of Aristotle`s writings, which offer the modern reader distinct philosophical perspectives on the relationship between ethics and politics.
