Описание: This study of police governance draws on over ninety interviews conducted with Argentine police officers. In Argentina, a rising fear of crime has led to the politics of Seguridad, a concept that amalgamates personal safety with state security. As a new governing rationale, Seguridad is strengthening forms of police intervention that weaken the democracy. As they target crime, the police have the power to deny rights, deciding whether an individual is a citizen or a criminal suspect - the latter often being attributed to members of vulnerable groups. This study brings together key issues of governance that involve the police, democracy, and the quality of citizenship. It sheds light on how the police act as gatekeepers of citizenship and administrators of rights and law. Here, the rhetoric of Seguridad is seen as an ideological framework that masks inequality and unites "good" citizens. Seguridad shows how police practices should be part of our understanding of regimes and will appeal to anyone concerned with security forces, as well as researchers in democratic theory and Latin American politics.

Описание: This book adds to knowledge about chief police officers in England and Wales by exploring their understandings of the right of police to exercise power. Their beliefs, motivations, backgrounds, and cultures are examined. Light is cast on how they perceive power, coercion, control, policing purpose, gendered understandings, protecting people, vulnerability, policing by consent, discretion, operational independence, law and the oversight and political direction (or governance), and accountability of police. Chief officers used three legitimating narratives based on: protecting people — particularly the most vulnerable — policing by consent, and law and the oversight and political direction of police. These accounts are assessed. Damaged processes of police governance that risk undermining police leadership and legitimacy are revealed. Critically, chief officers’ understandings of legitimacy are found to be confused, conflicted, and, above all, convenient in supporting them in asserting a privileged position from which they can pursue their preferences for the use of power.

Описание:

This timely volume provides a critical analysis of the most comprehensive and least comprehended of state powers, the power to police, broadly understood as the power to maximize public welfare—or, more colorfully, its "peace, order, and good government."

Featuring contributions by leading scholars from several countries working in a variety of fields, including law, criminology, political science, history, sociology, and social theory, The New Police Science examines the power to police as a basic technology of modern government that appears in a vast array of sites of governance, including not only the state, but also the household, the factory, the military, and—most recently—the global realm of war, police actions, and peacekeeping. This volume resurrects and radically re-envisions the once thriving study of police science as a comprehensive critical inquiry into the nature of governance.

Описание: Symbiosis in nature is the interaction between two distinct species looking to forge closer long-term relationships. There are three types of interactions; "Mutualism" (honey bees and flowers for example, where both species benefit), "Commensalism" (A bird`s nest on a tree for example, where one species benefits whilst the other is not harmed) and "Parasitism" (humans and mosquitoes for example, where one species benefits and the other is harmed). Symbiotic, human to human interactions seek to form closer long-term relationships based on "Mutualism", the type of interaction where there is mutual benefit. In the business context, symbiosis happens when key stakeholders collaborate as true partners (not adversaries) for mutual benefit. Assets exist to provide value to the organization and its stakeholders. The hotel asset owner through his representative interacts with the hotel brand operator to create value; find improvements, find opportunities. This book primarily looks at hospitality management, key relationships and the complex operational dynamics between two key stakeholders; hotel asset owners and their branded hotel operators focusing on five key principles and a symbiotic leadership approach as a key enabler. There is a lot of room for improvement and it is this crucial relationship that is examined. This guidebook has been written for hotel brand operators, hotel asset owners and their representatives who are managing, overseeing or monitoring a business venture for themselves or on behalf of others. It is also a valuable guide for students of hospitality as well as the curious layman - anyone who has stayed in a hotel.

Описание: Based on five years of ethnography, archival research, census data analysis, and interviews, Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries reveals how the LAPD, city prosecutors, and business owners struggled to control who should be considered “dangerous” and how they should be policed in Los Angeles. Sociologist Ana Mu?iz shows how these influential groups used policies and everyday procedures to criminalize behaviors commonly associated with blacks and Latinos and to promote an exceedingly aggressive form of policing.   Mu?iz illuminates the degree to which the definitions of “gangs” and “deviants” are politically constructed labels born of public policy and court decisions, offering an innovative look at the process of criminalization and underscoring the ways in which a politically powerful coalition can define deviant behavior. As she does so, Mu?iz also highlights the various grassroots challenges to such policies and the efforts to call attention to their racist effects. Mu?iz describes the fight over two very different methods of policing: community policing (in which the police and the community work together) and the “broken windows” or “zero tolerance” approach (which aggressively polices minor infractions-such as loitering-to deter more serious crime). Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries also explores the history of the area to explain how Cadillac-Corning became viewed by outsiders as a “violent neighborhood” and how the city’s first gang injunction-a restraining order aimed at alleged gang members-solidified this negative image. As a result, Mu?iz shows, Cadillac-Corning and other sections became a test site for repressive practices that eventually spread to the rest of the city.
