Описание:

This book is based on presentations and discussions of a group of world-renowned experts during a symposium "International Cerebral Palsy Function & Mobility Symposium: Improving Quality of Life for Individuals with Cerebral Palsy through Treatment of Gait Impairment" which was held in Banff, Canada, in December 2019. Clinicians and scientists are paired to discuss the current state of knowledge, working at the border of what we know and what we don't, to advance the care of those with gait impairment due to cerebral palsy. Using authors with different focus, points of view, and ways of thinking, to help establish a framework to guide research efforts for the next five years and to ensure that progress continues to be made to improve the quality of life for those with gait impairments. Disparate topics are unified by a common format of bulleted key points and objectives at the beginning of each chapter and research goals at the end to make the results more rapidly accessible.

  • Focus on gait and mobility in a clear, well-structured format.
  • Enhances debate and exploration of issues.
  • Challenges long-held assumptions to explore the current state of research, testing, and treatment and help direct it meaningfully.
  • The disparate topics are unified by a common format of bulleted key points and objectives at the beginning of each chapter and research goals at the end to make the results more rapidly accessible.
  • Presents objective, but also expert opinion, on how future research could be best directed.
  • Patient goals need more attention, outcomes have stagnated, the details of the underlying neurological impairments are still a mystery, and strong evidence for what we do is desperately needed.

Описание: Cerebral visual disorders have far-reaching consequences for child development. These have profound adverse effects on children’s education and success in school and also in later life, but, unfortunately, cerebral visual disorders often remain undiagnosed and untreated in the pediatric population. This book provides a state-of-the-art account of what is known about the development and disorders of visual perception in children. It covers the development and disorders of visual perception in children, their assessment, early intervention and management in an interdisciplinary context, both from a scientific as well as clinical perspective. Case studies illustrate the recommended assessment and rehabilitation procedures; synopses, boxes and check-lists complement the presentation of our recommendations for clinical practice.

Описание:

Translational research connects science and clinical medicine from "the bench to the bedside." In Sleep, Epilepsies and Cognitive Impairment, the authors look back from the bedside to the brain function underlying clinical symptoms and reveal mechanisms explored by contemporary neuroimaging and signal analysis in the overlapping fields of sleep and epilepsy. This book will help the reader to see epilepsy from a new viewpoint.

The common pathophysiology binding together the diverse manifestations of epilepsies is the exaggeration of plastic functions of the brain involving the hippocampus, the non-specific thalamocortical system and the perisylvian cognitive network. Epileptic derailment seems to be the price for the latest achievements of the mammal and human brain; namely the highly developed ability to change and learn. The contemporary results of sleep research provide new viewpoints to explain why sleep and epilepsy are bedfellows. Converging evidence supports the concept that one of the most important biological roles of NREM sleep is the renewal of synaptic balance ensuring learning ability from one day to the next and consolidation of new memories. Epilepsy and NREM sleep use overlapping structures and functions, therefore epilepsy beginning in early childhood may interfere with sleep plastic functions. NREM sleep, which affects original learning and memory, may become the hidden source of chronic cognitive impairment when epilepsy occurs during sleep and blocks the plastic processes.

Sleep, Epilepsies and Cognitive Impairment abandons the academic classification of epilepsy by following the system epilepsy concept, binding major epilepsies with structures and functions of physiological brain systems. It tries to show within this system the close interrelationship between sleep, epilepsy and cognition.

Neuroscientists, clinical epileptologists and neurologists interested in brain processes underlying brain plasticity, sleep and epilepsy will find this book thought provoking. It offers good "brain-gymnastics" for reconsidering the ideas on epilepsy.

  • It provides contemporary knowledge about the neurophysiological and functional anatomical background of major epilepsies
  • Treats major epilepsies as system epilepsies of brain networks
  • Reveals the interrelationship of sleep, epilepsy and cognitive impairment showing how epileptic manifestations became facilitated in NREM sleep and interferes with sleep plastic functions

Описание: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) are commonly viewed as the first and second most common types of dementia, respectively. The traditional paradigm has been to view and treat each illness as a separate entity with a separate pathophysiology. However, clinical and
pathological studies suggest that the boundary separating AD and VaD, as well as their mild cognitive impairment (MCI) analogs, is not well defined. Thus, there is increased interest in viewing these diseases along a spectrum because of the significant overlap in the characterization and diagnosis
of AD, VaD, and MCI. The focus of this edited volume is to examine how AD and VaD, as well as their MCI analogs, are best viewed as a heterogeneous, intersecting, if not a continuous disease state rather than separate, distinct entities. This book examines this approach by providing empirically
based evidence, reviews of the literature, and chapters by key leaders in the field and will be of interest to clinical neuropsychologists and anyone studying or treating dementia in its many forms.
