Описание: Costume design is storytelling. And to do it successfully, you need to understand the five functions of a costume: to connect to plot and theme, establish the structure of society, put in a specific time and place, indicate personality, and reveal a passage of time. It is an exciting and challenging craft that involves a thoughtful and thorough examination of these various elements in order to give a costume life. In animation, games, and illustration, in particular, the designer needs to be acutely aware of the unique characteristics and limitations of each medium--from solid research approaches and basic production pipelines to audience experience and ideal tools of the trade. Talking Threads: Costume Design for Entertainment Art, backed by decades of experience of five industry professionals, provides an in-depth exploration of these functions and format considerations to equip artists with the necessary knowledge and mindset to develop strong narrative-informed costume designs. Each chapter is packed with creative exercises, detailed tutorials, inspiring designs, and invaluable insights that will help artists of all levels confidently and efficiently tackle their next costume adventure.
Описание: Threads of Empire examines how Russia's imperial officials and intellectual elites made and maintained their authority among the changing intellectual and political currents in Eurasia from the mid-16th century to the revolution of 1917. The book focuses on a region 750 miles east of Moscow known as Bashkiria. The region was split nearly evenly between Russian and Turkic language speakers, both nomads and farmers. Ufa province at Bashkiria's core had the largest Muslim population of any province in the empire. The empire's leading Muslim official, the mufti, was based there, but the region also hosted a Russian Orthodox bishop. Bashkirs and peasants had different legal status, and powerful Russian Orthodox and Muslim nobles dominated the peasant estate. By the 20th century, industrial mining and rail commerce gave rise to a class structure of workers and managers. Bashkiria thus presents a fascinating case study of empire in all its complexities and of how the tsarist empire's ideology and categories of rule changed over time.

Описание: "If Nick Flynn's Stay is a self-portrait, it is a self-portrait of our planet, of our contemporary consciousness in an undeniably wounded era. I think of it as an artist's notebook, a prayer book, a monumental compendium of what it means to stay alive." -Mary Ruefle With Stay, acclaimed poet, artist, and bestselling memoirist Nick Flynn presents a self-portrait via a constellation of topics that have circled his work. Ranging from the impact of suicide and homelessness to addiction, political engagement, and the vital power of artistic friendships, Stay is a mixed-media retrospective that shows nothing is created in isolation. Mirroring Flynn's life, this work of visual and literary memoir is populated by examples of his collaborations since the 1980s with such luminaries as the photographers Amy Arbus and Catherine Opie, composer Guy Barash, actor Robert De Niro, cartoonist Josh Neufeld, author Sarah Sentilles, filmmaker Paul Weitz, and artists John Baldessari, Marilyn Minter, and Bill Shuck. In Flynn's refusal to conform to narrative or the safety of his own perspective, Stay grasps for an essential truth, an answer to what art, in the end, can and cannot reflect.

"A post-hardcore rock star, community activist, and social justice intellectual offers an alternative look at countercolonial history through the lens of the Rastafari movement...Sullivan offers a vibrant examination of American and African history with an anti-colonial patina, colored by episodes from the lives of fascinating and often controversial figures in both the past and contemporary history...An engaging and challenging read." --Kirkus Reviews
"Exceptionally well written, organized and presented, Revolutionary Threads: Rastafari, Social Justice, and Cooperative Economics is a groundbreaking study that is enhanced for academia with the inclusion of an appendix (Rastafari Historical Time Line), and a nine page bibliography." --Midwest Book Review
"Most of what Sullivan] talks about concerning non-European exploration of North and South America pre Columbus is accepted historical fact. That it's not taught in history books in most schools is wrong and unfortunate. Sullivan has done a good job of presenting this information in an articulate and approachable manner, making it easy for almost anyone to comprehend." --BlogCritics
"This is a wildly provocative and worthwhile read, and I'm delighted that the late revolutionary Marilyn Buck emerges in these pages as the courageous and committed fighter that she was--in the radical abolitionist tradition of John Brown. Live like her " --Bill Ayers, author of Demand the Impossible A Radical Manifesto
"This is a fascinating book that covers centuries and continents of connections between black liberation and cooperatives. Bobby Sullivan provides a refreshing perspective on both dynamic movements." --Jessica Gordon-Nembhard, author of Collective Courage
Revolutionary Threads offers an American Rasta's retelling of episodes in American history with an anticolonial thrust, accented by Bobby Sullivan's own personal experiences. The book ties together various subjects while returning each time to the culture of Rastafari, social justice movements, and cooperative economics. From how we perceive history in general, America's precolonial past, and global capitalism's early development and the resistance to it, to political prisoners and a celebration of religious tolerance, the book approaches North America with an African-centrical perspective. Sullivan aims to dispel the oversimplification of our perceptions of Rastafari, as well as other cultures, in the age of the Internet, where the loudest voices are often the most extreme and divisive. Revolutionary Threads hopes to serve as a unifying agent for our all-too-connected global village, and for the resistance to the consolidation of global capital and all its excesses.

Описание: Inspired by the author's immigrant ancestors, this is an intimate account of seven unforgettable women surviving extraordinary challenges and hardships in their new homes in America. These brave pioneer women express their dreams and losses and their joys and heartbreaks in the form of letters, diaries and other writings based on extensive genealogy research, documented facts and historical events. Spanning a time period from 1857 to 1939, their immigration and life stories are at the same time heartbreaking and heartwarming.Sophia's family faces the dangers of the raw frontier of Minnesota, and they must flee for their very lives during the Sioux Uprising of 1862. Her sons later serve in the Civil War with tragic consequences. Her daughter Louisa tells a coming-of-age story and makes a surprising marriage, but struggles to keep her faith alive amidst terrible losses. Henrietta suffers the hardships of homesteading and living in a sod house to ensure that her three sons will never go hungry. Albertina goes kicking and screaming from a good life in Germany to a lonely life on the open prairies, with her family unfortunately arriving in Minnesota at the same time as the grasshopper plagues. Faced with a life of shame in Bohemia, Magdalena risks an arranged marriage to a man in America. She loves having child after child, but is devastated by the deaths of many of them. Carolina dutifully follows her husband's dream and raises her family in a tiny log cabin on the harsh frontier. She feels blessed to have not lost any of her ten children, but tragedies strike later in life. Eliza, with a strong independent personality and known as a "hard woman", details her family's immigration from Germany to Minnesota, their daily lives, and the hardships of the Great Depression. The history and evolution of quilting in America from pre-Civil War times through the 1930s is intertwined throughout these stories, with special quilts representing the patterns and fabrics from each era. Threads of the Past is beautifully illustrated with over one hundred wonderful vintage photos and ephemera. The life stories of these courageous women are at the same time harrowing and hopeful, heartbreaking and uplifting, but always grounded in faith and love of family.
