Описание: This book on investigative electrocardiography is addressed to investigators who are using electrocardiology as a research tool in epidemiological or clinical research or in investigations on possible adverse responses of new pharmacological agents. The primary emphasis of the book is on prognostic implications of ECG abnormalities in the conditions covered, including the prevalence and incidence of ECG abnormalities in contrasting populations. We excluded from our book cardiac disorders with a relatively low population pre- lence that otherwise may be of great clinical interest. We also decided to exclude acute myocardial infarction because we had only limited resources available on this topic from our population studies and from those clinical trials in which we have personally p- ticipated in the classi? cation of trial endpoints within the framework of an ECG research center. Clinical trials are a relatively new area of electrocardiology. However, electrocard- graphy has become a most valuable research tool in clinical trials and in investigations on morbidity and mortality risk associated with various clinical and subclinical con- tions. It has also become a crucial research tool in investigating adverse cardiac events associated with administration of new drugs. Evaluation of QT prolongation plays a central role in these investigations. As a possible marker of malignant arrhythmias, it is used by regulating agencies in their decision process for approval of new pharmacolo- cal agents.

Описание: Epidemiology has come a long way since diseases were thought to be caused by `pestilential vapours`. This fascinating history traces the evolution of epidemiology, with an emphasis on developments since World War II, and makes the case for continued vigilance.

Описание: Presenting the insights of one of the leading participants in recent advances in the field, this innovative, ambitious book introduces epidemiological research, exploring important concepts and connecting the discipline to related fields such as statistics.
Описание: This book comprehensively reviews various vector-borne diseases and their control methods. It discusses morphology, life history, and pathogenicity of protozoan and helminth parasites. Further, it analyzes host-parasite interactions and their adaptation within the host system for understanding parasitic infections. The book discusses the complex life cycle, biochemical adaptations, and molecular biology of the parasites. It investigates the immunological response to different infectious agents and explores new targets for combined therapeutic approaches. It also summarizes the evolution of parasitism and the ecology of parasites of the different phylum. Lastly, it provides information on vector biology emphasizing the role of basic vector research in developing future disease control methods and improving upon the existing approaches.
Описание: In 1983 two doctors, one from each side of the world, decided to form a partnership, and so began a scientific adventure that would improve the odds that babies could be born healthy and whole. Neural tube defects that severely disabled or killed babies were epidemic in China (where the folk term was guai tai--roughly "monster baby"--for an infant whose embryonic neural tube doesn't completely close and whose head and neck may be misshapen or spine may protrude) and a significant problem in the United States, leading teams of researchers from the United States and China to combine forces to recruit more than 285,000 Chinese women and to follow nearly 250,000 pregnancies in an epidemiological study.
Sixteen thousand staff were involved in running the project, which encountered massive bureaucratic obstacles as well as cultural differences, politicking for study designs and funding, the crisis of Tiananmen Square, and testy debates over research ethics. Nevertheless, the researchers persevered in a collaboration that lasted more than three decades and led to landmark findings on the role of folic acid in preventing spina bifida. Fortifying cereal grain products with folic acid became routine in the United States and a growing number of nations around the world: that intervention was named one of the ten great public health achievements of the last decade.
