Описание: This volume contains sixteen articles by international experts from different disciplines touching on various aspects on medieval and early modern cults of saints from different corners of Europe, with a special focus on Scandinavian saints and their artistic receptions up to modern times. The saints represented different aspects of a Christian world-view forming the basis of communal identities, still present in post-Reformation Europe. Notions of cultural memory underpin several of the studies in the volume. Moreover, the reader will also find articles concerning the function of saints' cults, in particular how the material culture of these cults was perceived and experienced by the medieval beholder. The book includes a recording of music from the Middle Ages up to modern times focusing on saints and the notion of sanctity.

Описание: In this volume, Stanislaw Rosik focuses on the meaning and significance of Old Slavic religion as presented in three German chronicles (the worksof Thietmar of Merseburg, Adam of Bremen, Helmold of Bosau) written during the time of the Christianization of the Western Slavs. The source analyses show the ways the chroniclers understood, explained and represented pre-Christian beliefs and cults, which were interpreted as elementsof a foreign, “barbarian”, culture and were evaluated from the perspective of Church doctrine. In this study, individual features of the three authors are discussed– including the issue of the credibility of their information on Old Slavic religion– and broader conclusions on medieval thought are also presented.

Drawing on documentary, literary and visual evidence rarely considered together, it reveals that liturgical texts, music, and ritual were integral to the clergy`s well-informed promotion of saints buried in their churches.
