Описание: Based on newly available documents and others translated for the first time, Nicholas Kadar sheds important new light on the thinking of the celebrated Hungarian doctor Ignaz Semmelweis at the Vienna School of Medicine, where he discovered the cause and prophylaxis of childbed fever, one of the greatest findings in the history of medicine.
Описание: This manual provides risk-based guidance for designing, planning and implementing effective participatory and syndromic surveillance of Rift Valley fever (RVF). It shows how to tailor this guidance to the epidemiological needs of individual countries, starting with setting appropriate objectives.
RVF virus, a mosquito-borne zoonotic agent, causes haemorrhagic fever in humans, and abortion and neonatal death in livestock. Outbreaks have caused national meat markets to collapse and have provoked regional trade embargoes. The geography of infection and clinical disease is expanding, also because of climate change.
This publication argues that effective surveillance is essential to mitigate the impact of RVF. For this reason, RVF surveillance objectives need to be in line with the country’s risk category and economic goals. The manual suggests questions to help build a timely and sensitive surveillance system suited to national objectives and resources.

Описание: In the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, legions of English citizens headed north. Why and how did Scotland, once avoided by travelers, become a popular site for English tourists? Katherine Haldane Grenier uses published and unpublished travel accounts, guidebooks, and the popular press to examine the evolution of a false view of Scotland as untouched by nineteenth-century transformations.
Описание: The HIV/AIDS, STIs, TB and Malaria volume explores the cost-effectiveness of prevention, treatment, and management of major infectious diseases endemic in low-resource settings. Treatment as disease prevention, specialised health delivery platforms for certain populations, balancing access to TB prevention and treatment, and malaria elimination are among the topics highlighted.
Описание: The COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, Hubei, saw great numbers of patients overwhelming the admission capacity of designated infectious diseases hospitals, which in turn led to insufficient medical supplies fulfilling treatment needs. Hence, Zall Foundation proposed the construction of COVID-19 Emergency Hospitals to effectively respond to the surging number of COVID-19 cases. This involved the conversion of existing hospitals that have insufficient, or do not have admission capacities for infectious diseases patients, into emergency hospitals that solely focus on receiving suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases. From January 30, 2020, Zall Foundation, along with professional medical institutions, reconstructed seven existing professional medical institutions into COVID-19 Emergency Hospitals in less than 10 days. In total, 4,583 wards were provided after renovation, where 2,833 confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients were cured. The COVID-19 Emergency Hospitals have played an important role in China's epidemic prevention and control by efficiently easing the problems of insufficient ward beds and inadequate admission capacities of infectious diseases hospitals.Based on the experience of construction and operation of the emergency hospitals which are designed in strict adherence to relevant medical standards and regulations, this manual has been compiled by the Zall Foundation. It aims to provide useful reference to the reconstruction of existing hospitals and practice of expanding medical resources for all other regions around the world, to effectively contribute to pandemic control. The manual has been translated into more than 20 languages.

A novel public health concept, the Fangcang Shelter Hospital was first proposed by Professor Wang Chen, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, in Wuhan, China, in February 2020. While responding to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, medical staff faced the pressing situation of limited medical supplies, which led Professor Wang Chen to the suggestion of converting large-scale public venues such as exhibition centers and indoor stadiums into shelter hospitals to receive large number of patients, as this involved minimum time and monetary costs. The five essential functions of Fangcang Shelter Hospitals (isolation, triage, provision of basic medical care, frequent monitoring and rapid referral, and essential living and social engagement) enable shelter hospitals to receive patients with mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19, and have the greatest impact on isolating the source of infection and expanding the area's health-care capacity.
Two of the first three Fangcang Shelter Hospitals set up in Wuhan were redeveloped by Zall Group Property from existing buildings, while Zall Foundation was responsible for the provision of essential medical supplies and logistical support to facilitate the running of these shelter hospitals. In total, the two shelter hospitals have been instrumental in diagnosing, treating and curing 3663 patients. Under the medical expertise and guidance of Professor Wang Chen, as well as inputs from Zall Foundation's crews who contributed to the design, renovation and operation of these shelter hospitals, this manual encompasses knowledge and experience distilled from the running of these Fangcang Shelter Hospitals. Covering five important aspects, namely the proposal, design, renovation, operation, and logistical support for shelter hospitals, this booklet aims to be a useful reference for other epidemic prevention and control efforts in regions around the world. The manual has been translated into more than 20 languages.
