Описание: In this volume based on her 2014 Locke Lectures, Martha C. Nussbaum provides a bracing new view that strips the notion of forgiveness down to its Judeo-Christian roots, where it was structured by the moral relationship between a score-keeping God and penitent, self-abasing, and erring mortals.

Описание:

Anger is not just ubiquitous, it is also popular. Many people think it is impossible to care sufficiently for justice without anger at injustice. Many believe that it is impossible for individuals to vindicate their own self-respect or to move beyond an injury without anger. To not feel anger in those cases would be considered suspect. Is this how we should think about anger, or is anger above all a disease, deforming both the personal and the political?

In this wide-ranging book, Martha C. Nussbaum, one of our leading public intellectuals, argues that anger is conceptually confused and normatively pernicious. It assumes that the suffering of the wrongdoer restores the thing that was damaged, and it betrays an all-too-lively interest in relative status and humiliation. Studying anger in intimate relationships, casual daily interactions, the workplace, the criminal justice system, and movements for social transformation, Nussbaum shows that anger's core ideas are both infantile and harmful.

Is forgiveness the best way of transcending anger? Nussbaum examines different conceptions of this much-sentimentalized notion, both in the Jewish and Christian traditions and in secular morality. Some forms of forgiveness are ethically promising, she claims, but others are subtle allies of retribution: those that exact a performance of contrition and abasement as a condition of waiving angry feelings. In general, she argues, a spirit of generosity (combined, in some cases, with a reliance on impartial welfare-oriented legal institutions) is the best way to respond to injury. Applied to the personal and the political realms, Nussbaum's profoundly insightful and erudite view of anger and forgiveness puts both in a startling new light.

Описание:

A very intriguing book that takes a slightly different look at the act of charity.

Inspired by the author's own involvement with charity, this book explores the less obvious benefits of the act of giving - the benefits to the giver.

When someone commits an act or makes a donation for the benefit of another, everyone wins. Charity The Gifts of Giving discusses how each party benefits and why we should all give a little more.

Most of us agree that giving is a good thing to do and that many worthy recipients could benefit from our help. What is the connection between giving to others and reaping rewards yourself? Of course, making a difference in someone's life makes you feel good, but the "gifts" go far deeper than that. Charity explains those many gifts in detail and will empower you to receive these gifts in your life.

Learn how the act of giving can help you find greater peace, happiness and joy in your own life. In Charity you will discover:

  • How the positive energy from giving negates the negative energy we are all bombarded with, combats anxiety, and helps manage stress.
  • How you can achieve a winner's mindset full of positive thoughts and emotions to combat obstacles, challenges, and setbacks.
  • Practical ways to give, whatever your budget.
  • Websites to help you give quickly and easily in the way you choose.
  • Ways to inspire your group or organization to greater giving.
  • A more fulfilling life experience and more joyful interaction with others.

Charity is a powerful and compelling guide that transcends the ordinary "how-to's" of giving to enumerate the emotional and spiritual abundance you will enjoy from your kindness and generosity.

Discover how your generosity and kindness toward others creates positive energy in you.

A must read for anyone who is regularly involved in charity or giving. A should read for anyone who would like to start experiencing the benefits that giving creates.

If you would like to make a difference but want some guidance on where to start, Charity will deliver all you need and more. Whether you have a lot to give or a little, this book is the road map you need to give effectively and enjoy the benefits of giving as you do it.

Описание:

The key to happiness is being rich, successful, and beautifulright? Martin Thielen, best-selling author of Whats the Least I Can Believe and Still Be a Christian?, insists that this is far from the truth. Happiness, Thielen argues, does not come from external factors like getting a job promotion or finally reaching your goal weight. Rather, happiness is an inside job.

In brief, easy-to-read chapters, Thielen offers ten traits of happy and fulfilled people. Using psychological research, personal anecdotes, and Scripture, Thielen begins the path to contentment by showing how life circumstances--including income, health, physical appearance, and marital status--only account for about 10 percent of a person's overall life satisfaction. From there, he offers alternatives to the frequent methods we use to make ourselves happy. Instead of aiming to make more money, Thielen contends that expressing gratitude and cultivating optimism are surer paths to joy. Rather than focusing on constant advancement in our careers, let's practice our ability to forgive, to be generous, and to use trials as growth opportunities. These lessons, and much more, help readers who may be dissatisfied in their lives see that authentic contentment is closer than they ever imagined.

The book features a guide for group or individual study, which includes questions for reflection and a challenge for each individual to reflect on during the week.

Описание:

Partly in a desire to defend divine freedom and partly because it is seen as the only way of preserving a distinctive voice for theology, much contemporary theology has artificially restricted revelation and religious experience, effectively cutting off those who find God beyond the walls of the Church. Against this tendency, David Brown argues for divine generosity and a broader vision of reality that sees God deploying symbols (literary, visual and sacramental) as a means of mediating between the divine world and our own material existence. A sustained argument for divine interaction and more specifically the ways in which God speaks in the wider imaginative world, this volume calls for a careful listening exercise since symbols are richer and more open in their possibilities than their users often suppose. Not only is this true of the imagery of Scripture, even inanimate objects like buildings or hostile but creative artists can have important things to say to the believing Christian. An ideal introduction that also moves the conversation forward, this volume addresses foundations, the multivalent power of symbols, artists as theologians and meaning in religious architecture.

Описание: A barn raising. A quilting bee. A credit union. A socially responsible investment.

Where the People Go tells the story of Anabaptist-Mennonite efforts to enable communal forms of sharing. Mutual aid, stewardship, and generosity are deeply embedded in the Christian faith and have been actively nurtured among Anabaptist-Mennonite groups. Spontaneous forms of assistance--a barn raising, a quilting bee, shared meals--are the best-known expressions of such compassion and generosity, but the commitment to "sharing one another's burdens" has also found expression in more formal structures.

Seventy-five years ago, Mennonite Mutual Aid emerged to organize the principle of sharing within a growing Mennonite denomination. A dynamic organization from the beginning, MMA moved quickly from a burial and survivor's aid plan to include health, property, and automobile insurance. In coming decades, the organization shifted its focus from mutual aid to stewardship and generosity, symbolized by a growing emphasis on socially responsible investment programs, wholistic health, financial planning, and services associated with its member-owned credit union. Always an agency of the Mennonite church, MMA, now known as Everence, has balanced its spiritual commitments with an increasingly complex regulatory environment, the national strains associated with the health-care debate, the shifting sensibilities of its customers, and the organizational complexities of a major corporation.

This story of Everence captures the stresses and idealism of a church-related institution committed to mutual aid, stewardship, and generosity during its seventy-five-year history.
