Описание: This book offers an overview of the latest work in environmental remediation and waste management coming out of developing nations. It is split into two sections: one on state-of-the-art sustainable remediation approaches, and the other covering waste management for a cleaner environment The ten chapters in this book are structured as reviews that assimilate recent works in these areas; they provide a centralized resource for scholars in developing nations who are working in environmental remediation and waste management. The volume will be of interest to sustainability researchers, environmental engineers, industry managers and agricultural scientists.
Ecosystem effects from air pollution in the Adirondacks, Catskills, and elsewhere in New York have been substantial. Efforts to characterize and quantify these impacts, and to examine more recent recovery, have focused largely on surface waters, soils, and forests. Lakes, streams, and soils have acidified. Estuaries have become more eutrophic. Nutrient cycles have been disrupted. Mercury has bioaccumulated to toxic levels. Plant species composition has changed. Some surface waters show signs of partial chemical recovery in response to emissions control programs, but available data suggest that soil chemistry may continue to deteriorate under expected future emissions and deposition. Resource managers, policymakers, and scientists now need to know the extent to which current and projected future emissions reductions will lead to ecosystem recovery. In this book, Timothy J. Sullivan provides a comprehensive synthesis of past, current, and potential future conditions regarding atmospheric sulfur, nitrogen oxides, ammonium, and mercury deposition; surface water chemistry; soil chemistry; forests; and aquatic biota in New York, providing much needed information to help set emissions reduction goals, evaluate incremental improvements, conduct cost/benefit analyses, and prioritize research needs. He draws upon a wealth of research conducted over the past thirty years that has categorized, quantified, and advanced understanding of ecosystem processes related to atmospheric deposition of strong acids, nutrients, and mercury and associated ecosystem effects. An important component of this volume is the new interest in the management and mitigation of ecosystem damage from air pollution stress, which builds on the "critical loads" approach pioneered in Europe and now gaining interest in the United States. This book will inform scientists, resource managers, and policy analysts regarding the state of scientific knowledge on these complex topics and their policy relevance and will help to guide public policy assessment work in New York, the Northeast, and nationally.

Описание: Covering topics from dietary exposure to chemicals through to the health effects of climate change, this book brings together contributors from around the world to highlight the latest science on how environmental pollutant exposure impacts upon public health.
Описание: Water differentiates planet earth from all the other planets in the solar system. At the same time, as the global supply of freshwater is beyond enough to meet all contemporary and foreseeable water needs, its spatial and temporal allocations are not. There are numerous areas in which freshwater resources remain inadequate to fulfil domestic, socioeconomic growth and environmental needs. In such areas, the lack of clean water to satisfy human consumption and sanitation needs is indeed a limitation on human health and productivity, and for this reason on economic growth as well as on the upkeep of a clean environment and holistic ecosystems. This book mentions that researchers must discover ways to take away these constraints. There are a couple of demanding situations in doing that, in particular given an unstable and unsure future climate, plus a rapidly developing population that is driving expanded socioeconomic improvement, globalization, and urbanization. How best to fulfil these needs requires research in various areas of water management. This book identifies the problems facing water managers today, and the research required to better inform individuals who attempt to develop a more sustainable and suitable future.
Advanced Nanomaterials for Pollutant Sensing and Environmental Catalysis presents the most recent advances and scientific discoveries in the fields of environmental protection and sensing with nanotechnology. The book's authors highlight recent advancements in how nanotechnology is being used to create more efficient pollution controls, with particular attention given to noble metal nanosensors, novel hollow micro-/nanostructures with innovative functions, and advanced nanocatalysts based on carbon materials for water splitting. Each chapter demonstrates the fundamentals of the technology, illustrating key concepts and highlighting the latest developments and challenges in these multi-disciplinary fields.
This book is a valuable resource for academic researchers, graduate students and R&D professionals in the fields of material science, chemistry, environmental science and nanotechnology.

Описание: This is the first volume on adsorption using green adsorbents and is written by international contributors who are the leading experts in the adsorption field. The first volume provides an overview of fundamentals and design of adsorption processes. For people who are new to the field, the book starts by two overview chapters presenting the principles and properties of wastewater treatment and adsorption processes. The book also provides a comprehensive source of knowledge on acid-base properties of biosorbents. It discusses fractal-like kinetic models for fluid-solid adsorption, reports on the chemical characterization of oxidized activated carbons for metal removal, and the use of magnetic biosorbents in water treatment. Furthermore, the thermodynamic properties of metals adsorption by green adsorbents, and biosorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organic pollutants are reviewed, and finally the recent trends and impact of nanomaterials as green adsorbent and potential catalysts for environmental applications are summarized. The audience for this book includes students, environmentalists, engineers, water scientists, civil and industrial personnel who wish to specialize in adsorption technology. Academically, this book will be of use to students in chemical and environmental engineering who wish to learn about adsorption and its fundamentals. It has also been compiled for practicing engineers who wish to know about recent developments on adsorbent materials in order to promote further research toward improving and developing newer adsorbents and processes for the efficient removal of pollutants from industrial effluents. It is hoped that the book will serve as a readable and useful presentation not only for undergraduate and postgraduate students but also for the water scientists and engineers and as a convenient reference handbook in the form of numerous recent examples and appended information.
