Описание: The book is about global energy use, its past and present, and its increasingly uncertain future. It lists the various ecological problems facing our planet, not just climate change, and how their gravity has been underestimated. It briefly looks at the various solutions, apart from renewable energy, proposed for solving the problems our present energy use raises, including solar radiation management, carbon dioxide removal, nuclear energy, and energy efficiency. Renewable energy (RE) is seen by many as the panacea for a variety of environmental challenges, and with the New Green Deal, even as a means of accelerating economic growth. The book critically examines the prospects for RE. It concludes that although it is essential that the world shifts to RE, not only will the ecologically sustainable energy from all RE sources likely fall well short of even present global energy use, but the very short time frame left for effective action means that RE cannot be more than of minor help. Hence, deep energy reductions will be needed, especially in high-income OECD countries. The book uses an Earth Systems Science approach, which is necessary because of the interconnection between the various challenges our Earth faces. It aims to combine the latest findings from a diverse array of biophysical as well as socioeconomic sciences to uncover the increasingly constrained energy options we will encounter.

Описание: This book presents the latest research on switching control, adaptive switching control, and their applications in the transient stability control and analysis of large-scale complex power systems. In large-scale complex power systems, renewable power generators, flexible power electronics converters, and distributed controllers are widely employed. Due to the poor overcurrent tolerance capability of power electronics converters and lacking of coordination mechanism, stability control in events, such as natural disasters, cascaded faults, and severe disturbances, is viewed as the key challenge in the operation of these systems. High-performance self-coordinated controllers are needed for the control of important power sources and power electronics converters. Adaptive switching controllers are a group of controllers designed by the authors for the control of various renewable power generators, synchronous generators, and modular multilevel converters. These controllers operate in a self-coordinated manner and aim to employ the largest transient control energy of converters and power sources. Imbalance between power generation and consumption is largely filled by the application of these controllers, and transient stability of power systems can be significantly improved. This book covers both the preliminary knowledge and key proofs in the design and stability analysis of adaptive switching control systems, and considerable simulation and experimental results are presented to illustrate the application and performance of the controllers. This book is used as a reference book for researchers and engineers in fields of electrical engineering and control engineering.

Описание: This book presents a flavour of activities focussed on the need for sustainably produced biomass to support European strategic objectives for the developing bioeconomy. The chapters cover five broad topic areas relating to the use of perennial biomass crops in Europe. These are: ‘Bioenergy Resources from Perennial Crops in Europe’, ‘European Regional Examples for the Use of Perennial Crops for Bioenergy’, ‘Genotypic Selection of Perennial Biomass Crops for Crop Improvement’, ‘Ecophysiology of Perennial Biomass Crops’ and ‘Examples of End-Use of Perennial Biomass Crops’. Two major issues relating to the future use of biomass energy are the identification of the most suitable second generation biomass crops and the need to utilise land not under intensive agricultural production, broadly referred to as ‘marginal land’. The two main categories of plants that fit these needs are perennial rhizomatous grasses and trees that can be coppiced. The overarching questions that are addressed in the book relate to the suitability of perennial crops for providing feedstocks for a European bioeconomy and the need to exploit environments for biomass crops which do not compete with food crops. Bioenergy is the subject of a wide range of national and European policy measures. New developments covered are, for example, the use of perennial grasses to produce protein for animal feed and concepts to use perennial biomass crops to mitigate carbon emissions through soil carbon sequestration. Several chapters also show how prudent selection of suitable genotypes and breeding are essential to develop high yielding and sustainable second generation biomass crops which are adapted to a wide range of unfavourable conditions like chilling and freezing, drought, flooding and salinity. The final chapters also emphasise the need to be kept an eye out for potential new end-uses of perennial biomass crops that will contribute further to the developing bioeconomy.

Описание:

Renewable energy has enjoyed relatively good - and sometimes extraordinary - growth in recent years, in particular photovoltaics and wind; but it will be difficult to sustain such rates of diffusion on a global basis. A more complete transition to renewable energy is required on a demanding timescale set by climate change and fossil fuel depletion. This book analyses strategies for promoting renewable energy within the context of a rapid energy transition, using case studies from different countries over the past 30 years.

Having described the global context in detail, covering oil and gas depletion, climate change, third world development and the potential for renewable energy, the authors evaluate support mechanisms at national and international levels, offering readers a clear understanding of the regulatory framework and an opportunity to promote renewable energy effectively.

This book offers energy policy makers, renewable energy professionals, energy consultants and students a platform for development and an invaluable research text.

Contributing authors include: Jorg Schindler and Werner Zittel, Ludwig Bohlkow-Systemtechnik, Germany; Ian Rowlands, University of Waterloo, Canada; Giulio Volpi, WWF Europe; Kristian Hvitfelt Nielsen, Aarhus University, Denmark; Staffan Jacobsson, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden; Peter Connor, University of Warwick, UK; Ole Langniss, Centre of Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany; Ryan Wiser, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, US; David Elliott, The Open University, UK; and Frede Hvelplund, Aalborg University, Denmark
