Описание: Saturn and Melancholy remains an iconic text in art history, intellectual history, and the study of culture, despite being long out of print in English. Rooted in the tradition established by Aby Warburg and the Warburg Library, this book has deeply influenced understandings of the interrelations between the humanities disciplines since its first publication in English in 1964. This new edition makes the original English text available for the first time in decades. Saturn and Melancholy offers an unparalleled inquiry into the origin and development of the philosophical and medical theories on which the ancient conception of the temperaments was based and discusses their connections to astrological and religious ideas. It also traces representations of melancholy in literature and the arts up to the sixteenth century, culminating in a landmark analysis of D?rer's most famous engraving, Melencolia I. This edition features Raymond Klibansky's additional introduction and bibliographical amendments for the German edition, as well as translations of source material and 155 original illustrations. An essay on the complex publication history of this pathbreaking project - which almost did not see the light of day - covers more than eighty years, including its more recent heritage. Making new a classic book that has been out of print for over four decades, this expanded edition presents fresh insights about Saturn and Melancholy and its legacy as a precursor to modern interdisciplinary studies.

Описание: The Golden Age of the Lithuanian Yeshivas tells the story of the last chapter of Jewish rabbinical schools in Eastern Europe, from the eve of World War I to the outbreak of World War II. The Lithuanian yeshiva established a rigorous standard for religious education in the early 1800s that persisted for over a century and continues to this day. Although dramatically reduced and forced into exile in Russia and Ukraine during World War I, the yeshivas survived the war, with yeshiva heads and older students forming the nucleus of the institutions. These scholars rehabilitated the yeshivas in their original locations and quickly returned to their regular activities. Moreover, they soon began to expand into areas now empty of yeshivas in lands occupied by Hasidic populations in Poland and even into the lands that would soon become Israel. During the economic depression of the 1930s, students struggled for food and their leaders journeyed abroad in search for funding, but their determination and commitment to the yeshiva system continued. Despite the material difficulties that prevailed in the yeshivas, there was consistently a full occupancy of students, most of them in their twenties. Young men from all over the free world joined these yeshivas, which were considered the best training programs for the religious professions and rabbinical ordination. The outbreak of World War II and the Soviet occupation of first eastern Poland and then Lithuania marked the beginning of the end of the Yeshivas, however, and the Holocaust ensured the final destruction of the venerable institution. The Golden Age of the Lithuanian Yeshivas is the first book-length work on the modern history of the Lithuanian yeshivas published in English. Through exhaustive historical research of every yeshiva, Ben-Tsiyon Klibansky brings to light for the first time the stories, lives, and inner workings of this long-lost world.
Описание: A Divine Messiah? ..A Jewish Idea? Tzvi Nassi, son of an Orthodox Jewish Rabbi, made an astounding discovery in Targum Isaiah, an ancient Jewish text authored around 30 BCE, credited to Jonathan Ben Uzziel. According to the Jewish Encyclopedia Jonathan ben Uzziel was "Hillel's most distinguished pupil". (Suk. 28a; B. B. 134a) Tzvi Nassi was so impressed with the message of Targum Isaiah that he translated it into English. This new edition of that English translation, as it was faithfully translated from accepted Jewish sources, is published here with both Jewish and Christian parallel texts of Isaiah, for convenient comparison with the Targum. Uncover the amazing truth for yourself that Tzvi Nassi was so excited about. What truth is that? Jonathan Ben Uzziel taught, and the early Synagogue believed in: a Divine Messiah! For example: "The prophet said to the house of David, "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and He has taken the law upon Himself to keep it. His name is called from eternity, Wonderful, The mighty God, who liveth to eternity, the Messiah, whose peace shall be great upon us in His days." Isaiah 9:6 TTI As Tzvi Nassi exclaimed: "If the doctrines of Jonathan Ben Uziel are considered by the Synagogue to be inspired [which they are], it follows that the present Jewish faith cannot be the faith of their fathers." Jews, Christians, and Messianics will all be amazed by Targum Isaiah.
