Описание: Contemporary discussions in metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of mind are dominated by the presupposition of naturalism. Arguing against this established convention, Jim Slagle offers a thorough defence of Alvin Plantinga’s Evolutionary Argument against Naturalism (EAAN) and in doing so, reveals how it shows that evolution and naturalism are incompatible.
Charting the development of Plantinga’s argument, Slagle asserts that the probability of our cognitive faculties reliably producing true beliefs is low if ontological naturalism is true, and therefore all other beliefs produced by these faculties, including naturalism itself, are self-defeating. He critiques other well-known epistemological approaches, including those of Descartes and Quine, and deftly counters the many objections against the EAAN to conclude that metaphysical naturalism should be rejected on the grounds of self-defeat. By situating Plantinga’s argument within a wider context and showing that science and evolution cannot entail naturalism, Slagle renders this most common metaphysical view irrational. As such, the book advocates an important reconsideration of contemporary thought at the intersection of philosophy, science and religion.

Can sound be perceived independently of its social dimension? Or is it always embedded in a discursive network? »Postcolonial Repercussions« explores these questions in form of a collective conversation. The contributors have collected sound stories and sound knowledge from Brazil to Morocco, listened to resonances from the Underground and the Pacific Ocean, from Popular Music and speech recognition. The anthology gathers heterogeneous approaches to emancipatory forms of ontological listening as well as pleas for critical fabulation and a practice of care. It tells us about opportunities, perspectives and the (im)possibility of decolonised listening.

Описание: 'Repercussions' is the second in the Ben Coverdale Trilogy. Having released Mary from her tyrannical boyfriend, Donald, he and Mary settle down to a new life together in Ben's beautifully converted cottage, La Sanctuaire, in the Loire Valley with their adorable son, Alex. Life is a dream - or it should be. Donald, however, has different ideas. He needs Mary in order to carry out an audacious plan that relates back to his time in, and his hurried exodus from, South Africa, some seven years earlier. Those who work for him know him as a ruthless man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. And what he wants is Mary. Ben is aware of the danger after he is physically attacked by Donald and they are chased halfway across France. In his determination to learn more about Donald, he manages to make contact with some black diamond miners from Kimberley, and discovers that Donald has a very unsavoury history. Rumours abound that he was responsible for the death of a coloured girl who found out about his illegal diamond dealings and threatened to blow the whistle on him. 'Repercussions' centres on the two men, Ben and Donald, each trying to stay one step ahead of each other, but Donald's actions, fuelled by his greed and desperation, take the upper hand. Fearing that Mary knows too much about his past, he puts out a contract to 'deal with her'. Donald retraces his steps to South Africa with help of the same man who got him out of the country those years before, but his companion is found dead in his cabin when they arrive back in England. The police think that there are no suspicious circumstances. A reader of part one of the Trilogy says on Amazon.com: Sanctuary is a well written, first novel for our author. I loved the development of the characters, they are charming. The quirky, best friend Georgina "Grunge" and the implementation of Madam Delphine was genius. The story line is concise and there are twists and turns that keep your attention. I found myself laughing or saying 'Oh no' out loud. This is a great weekend/rainy day/beach read and I cannot wait to read the sequel "Repercussions". The same group of characters appear in 'Repercussions' and play a major part in the progression of the story.
Описание: RMS Titanic sank in 1912, a US presidential election year; and in the very first days of the great House of Commons debate on Home Rule for Ireland. The Marconi companies were heroes to the press and the public, who credited them with saving the lives that were saved; JP Morgan, who owned the shipping trust that controlled Titanic's White Star Line, was a major political target for the trust-busters. And members of the British Cabinet, including the Attorney-General who was to direct (and nobble) the Crown's case in the Titanic enquiry, were up to their necks in inside trading in Marconi shares. This is the story of how, in Titanic's loss, 1500 souls were sacrificed to the 'settled science' and 'scientific consensus' of marine engineering. It is also the story of how the US and British loss enquiries were shaped by party politics, corrupted by corrupt politicians and the Marconi Scandal, tainted by the politics of Irish Home Rule, and - finally - salvaged by Oliver Wendell Holmes and the US Supreme Court, and by Lord Mersey's judgement in the Board of Trade Enquiry and the subsequent International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. Titanic sank a century ago; but she sails on, the ghost ship of modern law and politics, shaping our world in ways we don't notice. This is that story, told by the historians of Churchill's vindication in May 1940 and of how Congress, four months before Pearl Harbor, kept America's armed services ready for war, by a margin of one vote. Advance praise for When That Great Ship Went Down: 'What sank the Titanic? Its builders' belief that, when it came to building ships, "the Science Was Settled". And, as this cool reassessment of the US and British Titanic enquiries shows, politicians and regulators in 1912 were just as bad as the current lot: they had a progressive political narrative to push, and their own secrets to hide. Sounds familiar.' - James Delingpole, Daily Telegraph columnist, 2010 winner of the Bastiat Prize for Online Journalism, and author of, most recently, Watermelons: The Green Movement's True Colours 'In this sharply and eruditely-drawn account of the Titanic Inquiries on either side of the Atlantic, the authors warn: "What lessons this may hold for Mr Cameron and Mr Salmond is beyond the scope of this work." Fortunately, their vivid reconstruction and analysis enable us to draw plenty of damning parallels. This is a parliamentary procedural as well as the re-creation of a vanished pre-War world; its political and intellectual processes as well as a sociology ranging from Trollope to Joyce. This is far more than another clever "Titanic" book.' - Anne-Elisabeth Moutet, Paris Contributing Columnist, The Sunday Telegraph
