Описание: The Aim ofthe Book. This book is concerned with the subjects of vibrations and system dynamics on an integrated basis. Design engineers find themselves confronted with demands made on machin- ery, structures and dynamic systems which are increasing at such a rate that dy- namic performance requirements are always rising. Hence, advances in analysis and design techniques have to keep pace with recent developments in strong lightweight materials, more extensive knowledge of materials properties and structural loading. Whereas the excitation applied to structures is always increas- ing, the machine mass and damping is reduced. Consequently, unwanted vibra- tions can have very serious effects on dynamic systems. It is, therefore, essential to carry out vibration analysis as an inherent part of machine design. The problems arising either from the observed or predicted dynamic behaviour of systems are of particular interest in control theory. Vibration theory places emphasis on analysis, which implies determining the response to given excita- tions, and any design amounts to changing the system parameters so as to bring about a satisfactory response. The improvement in performance achieved by changing solely the parameters of the mechanical system is very limited. How- ever, a new approach to system design has proved to be more successful. It con- sists of designing forces that, when exerted on the system, produce a satisfactory response. This approach, known as control, has become a ubiquitous part of the engineering curriculum, completing the conventional mechanical disciplines.

Описание: This book grew from a course of lectures given to students in the Design School of the Westinghouse Company in Pittsburgh, Pa., in the period from 1926 to 1932, when the subject had not yet been introduced into the curriculum of our technical schools. From 1932 until the beginning of the war, it became a regular course at the Harvard Engineering School, and the book was written for the purpose of facilitating that course, being first published in 1934. In its first edition, it was influenced entirely by the author's industrial experience at Westinghouse; the later editions have brought modifications and additions suggested by actual problems published in the literature, by private consulting practice, and by service during the war in the Bureau of Ships of the U.S. Navy. The book aims to be as simple as is compatible with a reasonably complete treatment of the subject. Mathematics has not been avoided, but in all cases the mathematical approach used is the simplest one available. In the third edition the number of problems has again been increased, while the principal changes in the text concern subjects in which recent advances have been made, such as airplane wing flutter, helicopter ground vibration, torsional pendulum dampers, singing ships' propellers, and electronic instruments.
Описание: The first edition of this book appeared over three decades ago (Wiley-Interscience, 1983), whereas the second one saw light on the verge of new millennium (Dover, 1999). This is third, corrected and expanded edition that appears in conjunction with its companion volume .Thus, the reader is able to both get acquainted with the theoretical material and be able to master some of the problems, following Chinese dictum: I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand -- Confucius. The main idea of the book lies in the fact that three topics: probabilistic strength of materials, random vibrations, and probabilistic buckling are presented in a single package allowing one to see the forest in between the trees. Indeed, these three topics usually are presented in separate manners, in different specialized books. Here, the reader gets a feeling of true unity of the subject at large in order to appreciate that in the end what one wants is reliability of the structure, in conjunction with its operating conditions. As the author describes in the Preface of the second edition, this book was not conceived ab initio, as a book that author strived to compose. Rather, it was forced, as it were, upon me due to two reasons. One was rather a surprising but understandable requirement in the venerable Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands to prepare the lecture notes for students with the view of reducing skyrocketing costs of acquisition of textbooks by the students. The other one was an unusually warm acceptance of the notes that the author prepared while at Delft University of Technology and later in Haifa, at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology by the legendary engineering scientist Warner Tjardus Koiter (1914-1997). The energy necessary to prepare the second and third editions came from enthusiastic reviews that appeared in various sources. Author embraced the simplicity of exposition as the main virtue following Isaac Newton's view that 'Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.'

Описание:
An in-depth introduction to the foundations of vibrations for students of mechanical engineering
For students pursuing their education in Mechanical Engineering, An Introduction to Mechanical Vibrations is a definitive resource. The text extensively covers foundational knowledge in the field and uses it to lead up to and include: finite elements, the inerter, Discrete Fourier Transforms, flow-induced vibrations, and self-excited oscillations in rail vehicles.
The text aims to accomplish two things in a single, introductory, semester-length, course in vibrations. The primary goal is to present the basics of vibrations in a manner that promotes understanding and interest while building a foundation of knowledge in the field. The secondary goal is to give students a good understanding of two topics that are ubiquitous in today's engineering workplace - finite element analysis (FEA) and Discrete Fourier Transforms (the DFT- most often seen in the form of the Fast Fourier Transform or FFT). FEA and FFT software tools are readily available to both students and practicing engineers and they need to be used with understanding and a degree of caution. While these two subjects fit nicely into vibrations, this book presents them in a way that emphasizes understanding of the underlying principles so that students are aware of both the power and the limitations of the methods.
In addition to covering all the topics that make up an introductory knowledge of vibrations, the book includes:
● End of chapter exercises to help students review key topics and definitions
● Access to sample data files, software, and animations via a dedicated website
