Описание: In Towards the Light, A.C. Grayling tells the story of the long and difficult battle for freedom in the West, from the Reformation to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, from the battle for the vote to the struggle for the right to freedom of conscience. As Grayling passionately affirms, it is a story - and a struggle - that continues to this day as those in power use the threat of terrorism in the 21st century to roll-back the liberties that so many have fought and died to win for us. Including an appendix of landmark documents, including the British and American Bills of Rights and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, the Bloomsbury Revelations edition also includes a new preface by the author reflecting on developments since the book's original publication.

Описание: In 431 BC, the long simmering rivalry between the city-states of Athens and Sparta erupted into open warfare, and for more than a generation the two were locked in a life-and-death struggle. The war embroiled the entire Greek world, provoking years of butchery previously unparalleled in
ancient Greece. Whole cities were exterminated, their men killed, their women and children enslaved. While the war is commonly believed to have ended with the capture of the Athenian navy in 405 and the subsequent starvation of Athens, fighting in Greece would continue for several decades. Sparta's
authority was challenged in the so-called Corinthian War (395-387) when Persian gold helped unite Athens with Sparta's former allies. The war did not truly end until, in 371, Thebes' crack infantry resoundingly defeated Sparta at Leuctra, forever shattering the myth of Spartan military supremacy.

Jennifer Roberts' rich narrative of this famous conflict is the first general history to tell the whole story, from the war's origins down to Sparta's defeat at Leuctra. In her masterful account, this long and bloody war affected every area of life in Athens, exacerbated divisions between rich and
poor in Sparta, and sparked civil strife throughout the Greek world. Yet despite the biting sorrows the fighting occasioned, it remains a gripping saga of plots and counter-plots, murders and lies, thrilling sea chases and desperate overland marches, missed opportunities and last-minute reprieves,
and, as the war's first historian Thucydides had hoped, lessons for a less bellicose future. In addition, Roberts considers the impact of the war on Greece's cultural life, including the great masterworks of tragedy and comedy performed at this time and, most infamously, the trial and execution of
Socrates. A fast-paced narrative of one of antiquity's most famous clashes, The Plague of War is a must-read for history enthusiasts of all ages.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys: The Great Plague of London & The Great Fire of London, 1665-1666

Описание:

On April 30th, 1665 Samuel Pepys wrote "Great fears of the sickenesse here in the City, it being said that two or three houses are already shut up. God preserve as all " After these fateful words there ensued the Great Plague of London, followed swiftly by the Great Fire of London. Twenty months later, he concluded 1666 with "Thus ends this year of publick wonder and mischief to this nation, and, therefore, generally wished by all people to have an end... publick matters in a most sad condition; ... the City less and less likely to be built again, everybody settling elsewhere, and nobody encouraged to trade ... and all sober men there fearful of the ruin of the whole kingdom this next year; from which, good God deliver us " But his last word is "One thing I reckon remarkable in my owne condition is, that I am come to abound in good plate, ...".

While perhaps as many as 100,000 perished and the rich fled London in the face of the plague, Pepys sent "his wife and gold" out of the city and cautiously continued "life as normal", complaining about his excessive work and rejoicing at his abounding wealth, all the while observing and recording. This is a unique first-hand account of daily life and civic disaster in London, perhaps the most populous city of that time.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys, kept over the period of a decade, is regarded as the most human and accessible diary of life at the time. Pepys was a careful observer of events and especially people, using his own shorthand to record them in vivid detail and with compassion. This edition focuses on the period of the Great Plague of London and the Great Fire of London and contains all the entries from 1st June 1665 to 30th April 1666 and 1st-8th September 1666 and selected other entries.

About the author: Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) was an energetic, diligent self-made man with an enquiring mind and a zest for life. Born to humble parents he rose to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty, a role in which he excelled. In addition, he was a member of Parliament and a Fellow, and later President of the Royal Society, counting most of the leading scholars among his friends. He donated his collection of 3000 volumes to Magdalen College Cambridge, together with the funds to build a library to house them. Pepys was no stranger to power, being a trusted confidant of both Charles II and James II. Never-the-less, Samuel Pepys is best remembered for his diary.

Описание: This book explores how the cultural process of making any disease a "plague" results in discrimination against certain groups, as it has for those with AIDS in America. Gina M. Bright here captures the discrimination produced by plague-making in her analysis and her portraits of the people she has cared for with AIDS over the past quarter-century.
