Описание: Women's persuasion and performance in the Age of EnlightenmentOver a century before first-wave feminism, British women's Enlightenment rhetoric prefigured nineteenth-century feminist arguments for gender equality, women's civil rights, professional opportunities, and standardized education. Author Elizabeth Tasker Davis rereads accepted histories of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century British rhetoric, claiming a greater variety and power of women's rhetoric. This recovery of British women's performative and written roles as speakers, spectators, authors, and readers in diverse venues counters the traditional masculine model of European Enlightenment rhetoric. Davis broadens women's Enlightenment rhetorics to include highly public venues such as theaters, clubs, salons, and debating societies, as well as the mediated sites of the periodical essay, the treatise on rhetorical theory, and women's written proposals, plans, defenses and arguments for education. Through these sites, women's rhetorical postures diverged from patriarchal prescriptions rather to deliver protofeminist persuasive performances of wit, virtue, and emotion.Davis examines context, the effects of memory and gendering, and the cultural sites and media of women's rhetoric to reveal a fuller ecology of British Enlightenment rhetoric. Each chapter covers a cultural site of women's rhetorical practice-the court, the stage, the salon, and the printed page. Applying feminist rhetorical theory, Davis documents how women grasped their rhetorical ability in this historical moment and staged a large-scale transformation of British women from subalterns to a vocal counterpublic in British society.

Описание: This new anthology brings together excerpts from over one hundred documents detailing women's experiences from the end of the eighteenth century to the outbreak of the First World War. It looks in detail at all aspects of life for women in Britain in this period, including motherhood, marriage and domestic life, religion, philanthropy and politics, work, education, the migration of Irish, Jewish and Black and Asian women to Britain, women in the Empire, and first wave feminism. This documentary history draws on a wide range of sources including parliamentary reports, pamphlets, newspapers and journals, novels, poetry and hymns and seminal texts by activists in the women's movement and contains material essential for students of British social history and the nineteenth century. The selected writers include Mary Wollstonecraft, Harriet Martineau, Elizabeth Gaskell, Hannah More, Mary Prince, Chartist and radical women, Josephine Butler, Christabel Pankhurst and Queen Victoria, among many others - authentic voices who illuminate this period of history in their own words.
With air pollution now intimately affecting every resident of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, Saskia Abrahms-Kavunenko seeks to understand how, as a physical constant throughout the winter months, the murky and obscuring nature of air pollution has become an active part of Mongolian religious and ritual life. Enlightenment and the Gasping City identifies air pollution as a boundary between the physical and the immaterial, showing how air pollution impresses itself on the urban environment as stagnation and blur. She explores how air pollution and related phenomena exist in dynamic tension with Buddhist ideas and practices concerning purification, revitalisation and enlightenment. By focusing on light, its intersections and its oppositions, she illuminates Buddhist practices and beliefs as they interact with the pressing urban issues of air pollution, post-socialist economic vacillations, urban development, nationalism, and climate change.

Описание: Taking the Enlightenment and the feminist tradition to which it gave rise as its historical and philosophical coordinates, Feminism and the Politics of Travel After the Enlightenment explores travel as a "technology of gender." It also investigates the way travel's utopian dimension and feminism's utopian ideals have intermittently fed off each other in productive ways. With broad historical and theoretical understanding, Ya l Schlick analyzes the intersections of travel and feminism in writings published during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a period of intense feminist vindication during which women's very presence in the public sphere, their access to education, and their political participation were contentious issues. Schlick examines the gendering of travel and its political implications in Rousseau's Emile, and in works by Mary Wollstonecraft, St phanie-F licit de Genlis, Frances Burney, Germaine de Sta l, Suzanne Voilquin, Flora Tristan, Gustave Flaubert, and George Sand, arguing that travel is instrumental in furthering diverse feminist agendas. The epilogue alerts us to the continuation of the utopian strain of the voyage and its link to feminism in modern and contemporary travelogues by writers like Mary Kingsley, Robyn Davidson and Sara Wheeler.
Описание: Sarah F. Haynes provides a detailed analysis of Jack Kerouac’s unpublished diaries and Buddhist writing alongside the Buddhism presented in his published works. Kerouac’s involvement with Buddhism is traditionally accepted to have occurred between 1953-1958. However, his unpublished diaries reveal that he continued to write about Buddhism until at least 1967. Haynes’ comparative analysis of Kerouac's unpublished documents provides a richer and more complete understanding of Kerouac's Buddhist practice. She reflects on the differences between the themes in Kerouac’s published and unpublished Buddhism, arguing that Kerouac’s Buddhism is based in his search for stability, which is contradictory to the messages in his published works. Kerouac’s unpublished writings reveal his inability to actualize the lifestyle he promoted. Despite this conflict, however, the impact and legacy of Kerouac’s religious vision on the development of Buddhism in America is significant.

Описание: The Enlightenment was a complex and often contradictory moment for women in Europe and its colonies. The period between 1680 and 1800 saw civil liberties established through political and intellectual revolution. At the same time, contemporary thinkers produced justifications for ongoing gender, class, and racial inequalities which had profound effects on women. An age of burgeoning commercial and imperial expansion, the period witnessed the birth of consumer society and the peak of the Atlantic slave trade. Modern liberal feminism grew up in this environment, as did the abolition movement, early racial science and, incipiently, the science of sexuality. A Cultural History of Women in the Age of Enlightenment examines the ways in which women in differing national and social contexts negotiated the challenging cultural terrain of emergent modernity. The volume presents essays on women's life cycle, bodies and sexuality, religion and popular beliefs, medicine and disease, public and private realms, education and work, power, and artistic representation.
