Описание: With deep research and lively prose, prize-winning historian Christina Snyder reinterprets the history of Jacksonian era America through an experimental educational community called Great Crossings, a place where Indians, settlers, and slaves were transformed and tried to secure their place in a changing world.
Описание: This volume discusses the legacies of indenture in the Caribbean, Reunion, Mauritius, and Fiji, and how they still imbue our present. More importantly, it draws attention to India and raises new questions: doesn`t one need, at some stage, to wonder why this forgotten chapter of Indian history needs to be retrieved.

Описание: Jobymon Skaria, an Indian St Thomas Christian Scholar, offers a critique of Indian Christian theology and suggests that constructive dialogues between Biblical and dissenting Dalit voices – such as Chokhamela, Karmamela, Ravidas, Kabir, Nandanar and Narayana Guru – could set right the imbalance within Dalit theology, and could establish dialogical partnerships between Dalit Theologians, non-Dalit Christians and Syrian Christians. Drawing on Biblical and socio-historical resources, this book examines a radical, yet overlooked aspect of Dalit cultural and religious history which would empower the Dalits in their everyday existences.

Описание: Route 66 is a beloved and much studied symbol of twentieth-century America. But until now, no book has focused on the bridges that spanned the rivers, creeks, arroyos, and railroads between Chicago and Santa Monica. In this handsome volume, Route 66 authority and veteran writer and photographer Jim Ross examines the origins and history of the bridges of America's most famous highway, structures designed to overcome obstacles to travel, many of them engineered with architectural aesthetics now lost to time. Featuring hundreds of Ross's own photographs, Route 66 Crossings showcases bridges ranging in design from timber to steel and concrete, and provides schematics, maps, and global coordinates to help readers identify and locate them. Ross's comprehensive accounting of structures along the Mother Road's various alignments includes bridges still in use, those that have vanished or have been abandoned, and the few consciously preserved as monuments. He also recognizes ancillary structures that enhanced safety and helped facilitate traffic, such as railway grade separations, tunnels, and pedestrian underpasses. Ross seeks to encourage ongoing preservation of the structures that remain. In brilliant color and precise detail, Route 66 Crossings expands our knowledge of the bridges that linked America's first all-weather national highway.

Описание: Advance Praise for Border Crossings from Madeleine Albright:
"Border Crossings is the well-told and dramatic story of a young man whose comfortable life is abruptly transformed by the savagery of World War II. Forced to rely on primal instincts and his familiarity with the rugged highlands of Moravia, Charles Novacek casts his lot first with the anti-Hitler Underground and then with the resistance to the Nazis' Communist successors. "My recollections pain me," he writes, "still, they have made me who I am." Novacek's experience as a Hungarian-speaking Czecho-Slovak patriot demonstrates the folly of petty nationalism and the resilience of human decency and love." ― Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State
Description:
Border Crossings: Coming of Age in the Czech Resistance is the captivating, tender memoir of Charles Novacek, a Czechoslovakian whose idyllic childhood exploring the Tatra Mountains was shattered by the Nazi occupation of his homeland. He spent his youth defending his neighbors, his family, and his country, first from the Nazi atrocities of World War II and then from the Soviet oppression of the ensuing Cold War.
Charles was eleven years old when his father and uncle recruited him into the Czech Resistance. Antonin Novacek not only taught his son to survive in the wild, but also prepared him for wartime: how to resist pain, hunger, and fear and to trust no one. His assignments included delivering messages to soldiers parachuting behind enemy lines and hiding them in caves he equipped for their shelter.
As a young man, Charles was captured and jailed by the Communists and rescued by an underground resistance network. In too much danger to remain in Czechoslovakia, he staged a daring escape only to land in a miserable displaced persons camp. His will to live prevailed once again, and Charles eventually married and built a successful life in America.
Filled with heroic adventures and great bravery, Border Crossings is one man's remarkable tale of his incredible life and a testament to the human capacity to survive.
Additional Praise for Border Crossings: "I have been transformed by this honest, extraordinary telling. In Border Crossings Charles Novacek shows us, through his personal story (told as if we are right there in the room with him) the true face of totalitarianism; he reminds us of the preciousness, the miracle, of freedom. What a gift he has given us--and what a gift his wife, Sandra, has offered us, as well, in making sure that his brave story is here for the world to read. This is a powerful memoir that crosses all borders and speaks directly to the human heart."Joseph Hurka, author of Fields of Light: A Son Remembers His Heroic Father
"Here is a story that is meant to survive, just as its teller was. I got to know Charles in his later years but only had hints of what is contained in these pages. They are riveting. I was drawn into the best and worst of humanity and, not incidentally, into the history of the West in the mid-twentieth century. Courage, love, despair, a fierce will are all preserved with the help of one who was 'not the love of Charles' life. . . but his last love.'" John Kotre, Ph.D., author of White Gloves: How We Create Ourselves Through Memory
"Border Crossings helps fill the lack of personal accounts of resistance movements amidst a voluminous array of World War II literature. This compelling memoir, written through the eyes of young Charles, shows how circumstances required him to become a shrewd hero. In his opposition first toward Nazism and then Communism, Charles Novacek's personal story illustrates why people sacrifice themselves and their families for an ideal. Intimate, intense, fascinating " Christina Vella, coauthor of The Hitler Kiss
Описание: Moving away from conventional theories about Victorian attitudes towards race, Salesa focuses on an array of equally influential, yet seemingly opposite, ideas where racial crossing was seen as a means of improvement, a way to manage racial conflict or create new societies, or even a way to promote the rule of law.

Описание: When one thinks about southwestern archaeology, multistoried villages and cliff-dwellings often come to mind. But on the eastern periphery of the Southwest, other types of villages once thrived. In this volume, Jamie Clark and John Speth document the lives and lifeways of the people who inhabited two of these villages - Henderson and Bloom Mound.

Описание: Street Rod Horror Stories is a compilation of 80 stories given to the author by owners of street rods. Street rods are hot rod cars that are primarily driven on the street. These modified old cars generally have later model engines than the ones that came with them originally. Changes have been made to the steering, brakes, suspensions and frames. Owners primarily build and modify the cars themselves. Sometimes they do not make the changes according to rules of safety and longevity and thus the cars are involved in accidents, such as fires and crashes, as well as situations such as being stranded away from home with failed brakes, steering that came apart, or lights that would not come on when needed. The stories include those about hot rods, street rods, customs, trailers and motorcycles. There are tales about shop fires and the flooding of the parking lot at a major car show. Attention is given to the National Street Rod Association and their Safety Program which features free inspection of any car 30 years old or older. Many of the stories end with a lesson learned by a street rod owner or advice given to the reader for their use if they build similar cars.
