Описание: In Migration, Reproduction and Society , Alejandro I. Canales offers a theoretical model for understanding the dilemmas presented by migration in the transformation of contemporary society. Aging and changing demographics in advanced societies make economic and social reproduction dependent upon the contributions made by immigration. However, these same demographic processes are conducive to ethnic transformations. The political dilemma facing advanced societies is that immigration is required to ensure their reproduction, but this entails becoming multicultural societies where the political hegemony of ethnic and demographic majorities becomes radically subverted. This paves the way to a pervasive political conflict already evident in the current immigration crisis in Europe just as in the revival of racism and xenophobia in the United States.

Описание: Nicholas Daly offers a lively and provocative account of the transformation of culture by the population explosion of the nineteenth century. Finding examples in everything from ghost stories to opera to fashion, Daly shows how narratives and images of crowded city life circulated among Paris, London and New York.
Описание: Demography drives religious change. High-fertility societies, like most of contemporary Africa, tend to be fervent and devout. The lower a population's fertility rates, the greater the tendency for people to detach from organized or institutional religion. Thus, fertility rates supply an effective gauge of secularization trends. In Fertility and Faith, Philip Jenkins maps the demographic revolution that has taken hold of many countries around the globe in recent decades and explores the implications for the future development of the world's religions.
Demographic change has driven the secularization of contemporary Western Europe, where the revolution began. Jenkins shows how the European trajectory of rapid declines in fertility is now affecting much of the globe. The implications are clear: the religious character of many non-European areas is highly likely to move in the direction of sweeping secularization. And this is now reshaping the United States itself.
This demographic revolution is reshaping Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism. In order to accommodate the new social trends, these religions must adapt to situations where large families are no longer the norm. Each religious tradition will develop distinctive emphases concerning morality, gender, and sexuality, as well as the roles of clergy and laity in the faith's institutional structures.
Radical change follows great upheaval. The tidal shift is well underway. With Fertility and Faith, Philip Jenkins describes this ongoing phenomenon and envisions our collective religious future.

Описание:
The study deals predominantly with basic questions of Historical Demography that have so far not yet been tackled, as no adequate sources seemed to exist, or the effort for digging into these problems seemed outrageous. Many major gaps are filled in this study, based on two types of sources: 14 census-like nominal population listings for 126 parishes of the Zurich countryside, complemented by 52 parishes of adjacent areas, and four reconstituted communities with very early parish books. This allowed coming up with detailed population structures by year of age, sex and marital status for the year 1634, with regional variations. Full, detailed mortality tables by sex and for all ages could be calculated for the period 1634–37, by far the earliest mortality tables worldwide. Mortality during plague epidemics was analysed in detail, too, resulting in the first and only plague mortality table. Model life tables are presented as well, showing a pattern that differs strongly from what has been assumed so far. New insights could also be gained about premarital sex and the importance of remarriages.
Описание: The articles in this book, the majority of which were originally presented at the Southern Regional Demographic Group meeting in 1976, deal with fertility, mortality, migration, and the factors that influence these components.
Описание: Provides immigration tables for 19 Latin American countries for which data were available on the population censuses of the 2000 and 2010 decades. Information is compiled on the structure of the immigrant population by sex, age, years of schooling and participation in economic activity, according to census data.
During the last half century, Southeast Asia has undergone tremendous social, political, and economic change. This volume chronicles the extensive demographic transformations that have accompanied those changes, documenting how public health and other policy interventions contributed to rapid population growth and how new patterns of settlement and migration ensued. More recently, changing opportunities for young adults have revolutionized marriage and fertility choices and raised concerns about population aging.
The authors consider the recent demographic histories of the region alongside government policies intended to manage population growth rates; improve access to education, employment, and health services; influence levels of internal and international migration; and address environmental concerns. This groundbreaking study of postcolonial Southeast Asia addresses many of the contemporary demographic challenges facing the citizens and governments of the increasingly mobile and globalized region of Southeast Asia.
