Описание: Following the early battles of 1914 along the Marne and in the Ypres salient. World War I rapidly transformed from a war of movement into one of attrition, with the opposing sides entrenching themselves in a line of fortified positions from the Flanders coastline to the Swiss border.
Описание: Nearly a century on, the operational performance of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) on the Western Front during the First World War is still a hotly debated subject. The dominant perception is one of a conflict characterised by mud, trenches and futility, presided over by incompetent commanders. But over the last thirty years a different view has emerged and gained increasing prominence. Many historians have argued that the BEF deserves more credit for the wartime learning curve it underwent in evolving from a small professional force into a mass citizen army, which helped it to end the war victorious. The BEF has become the subject of ever more detailed research, as historians have sought to investigate all aspects of its operational practice. This book enters into this debate by taking a detailed look at a single infantry division, one of the BEF's vital constituent parts. It focuses on the 56th (London) Division, a first-line Territorial division that served continuously on the Western Front between February 1916 and November 1918. By focusing on and comparing three key battles in the Division's service - the Battle of Gommecourt on 1 July 1916, the Battle of Arras on 9 April 1917 and the Battle of Albert on 23 August 1918 - this study provides detailed insight into 56th Division's tactical development. It suggests that by the last year of the war, 56th Division had developed sophisticated offensive tactics borne out of years of hard-fought experience. This study utilises a range of archival sources, including the official documents of war diaries, operational orders and battle reports. But it also references the private papers of the officers and men who served in 56th Division, gaining the insight of individuals who witnessed and took part in these events at first hand. The voices that emerge from these sources are a testament to the dedication of many of the men who served with the Division and who helped it to develop increasingly effective fighting methods, as was also the case with the BEF as a whole. The 56th (London) Division therefore deserves to be remembered for its contribution to a painful, but ultimately victorious war effort.
1887 was an important year with the "German Army Bill" and much sabre rattling in Europe, Prince Bismarck stating in his speech on the Army Bill "We have done everything to induce the French to forgive and forget...... We are bound to maintain peace for this quarter of the globe, but for this a strong army is required".
A facsimile that includes the supplement for the German Infantry for 1887. Musketry exercises were intended to give the infantry instruction in shooting, to make effective use of their firearm in battle. As such the manual shows important details designed to make the infantry soldier battle-ready by the end of his first year of service. Instruction is subdivided into Preparatory exercises;Target practice; Field firing; Instructional firing; Inspection in musketry; Proving the rifle M/61.84 and revolver M/83.
Описание: Providing a systematic investigation into the evolving role of the artillery in the British Expeditionary Force, this study looks at how tactical and operational changes affected the overall Allied strategy. In line with the `learning curve` thesis, it argues that despite many setbacks and missed opportunities.

Описание: Living on the Western Front provides a highly original history of the settler experience in Befland ([B]ritish [E]xpeditionary [F]orce land) during the First World War. Using an unusual representational form that involves the stitching together of over a hundred extracts from primary sources, which can then in turn be read either chronologically or thematically, Chris Ward brilliantly depicts a sense of settlers' lives in Great War Belgium, Northern France and Germany. Simultaneously an annal and an anthology of stories, this book tells us about landscapes, sounds, smells, food, journeys, memory and morale in the way that the Befland settlers actually lived and experienced them. The book also challenges popular conceptions of what history writing can or should be. It drags us away from the reassuringly commanding authorial voice of the conventional historical narrative towards an approach that brings a degree of uncertainty and encourages us to experiment with History and its relationship with the past in an exciting and rewarding way.
This is the enthralling story of the experiences of the German 73rd Fusilier Regiment, the regiment of Ernst J nger, author of the renowned Storm of Steel, as it fought through the major campaigns of World War I's Western Front.
Combining traditional military history with a trench-level soldier's view of the Great War, this book tracks the experiences of an elite German regiment throughout the conflict, following the men who fought and died in the service of what would ultimately prove to be a futile cause. The German 73rd Fusilier Regiment spent the whole of World War I on the Western Front and was one of the Imperial German Army's most elite units. Starting with the occupation of Li ge, it took part in nearly every major campaign in the West, including the Champagne offensives, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and the Operation Michael offensives. Using the personal accounts of the soldiers themselves, including Ernst J nger, author of Storm of Steel, this engrossing story of a regiment at war presents the horror of trench warfare on a human scale, through the eyes of ordinary men-at-arms, as they fought for honor and survival in military history's most brutal theater of combat.

Описание: This is a major new study of the role of communications in shaping the outcome of British military operations on the Western Front during World War 1. It argues that communications were not only a leading cause of the trench stalemate of 1915-17, but were also crucial in helping break the deadlock in 1918.
The fourth volume of the history of air warfare--focusing on the war at sea and the Western Front
This outstanding, multi-volume examination of aerial warfare during the First World War from the perspective of British air forces continues in volume four with accounts of two different theatres. As the war progressed Germany increasingly invested resources in the expansion of its submarine fleet. German surface warships were comparatively ineffective strategically, since Germany is poorly placed geographically as regards access to the seaways. Allied surface fleets meanwhile remained powerful with free access to supplies and ports across the globe. Escorted merchant ships carrying essential war materiel and other goods continued to dock in and depart from the British Isles. The German solution to disrupt seaborne traffic and so compromise the effectiveness of Allied armies in the field initially proved to be brutally effective and measures to defeat the undersea menace of the U-Boats were of paramount importance. The work of the RFC and the RNAS in countering the scourge of the submarine and other naval threats is described here in thorough detail. The second part of this volume continues the examination of the war in the air as it was fought over the trenches of the Western Front. The war had reached a point of stalemate on the ground which made its aggressive prosecution in the skies essential and this volume, which covers the period from the Battle of Messines to the German Spring Offensive of 1918, includes many riveting accounts of aerial combat.

The stories of the German surface raiders during the Great War
The creation of surface merchant raiders by the Imperial German Navy at the outset of the First World War, was an innovative departure from the traditional practices of naval fleet operations. These ships had originally been merchant vessels and at first sight remained so. However, they were the definitive 'wolves in sheep's clothing', for they carried beneath their disguises, which could be dropped when a target vessel was in close range, a formidable array of weaponry which included naval guns, torpedoes and mines. Some carried their own reconnaissance seaplanes and crews. This was a bold tactical initiative for these ships, acting independently, had missions that in many respects were destined to be ill fated. Their task was to do as much damage--principally to merchant ships carrying materiel for the Allied cause--as they could without (or before) being caught by the warships that were seeking to destroy them. Inevitably some were quickly sunk, or eventually beached or scuttled, and others were forced into neutral ports where they were interned for the duration of hostilities. Some, such as the SMS Wolf, were, however, phenomenally successful, and returned to their home ports to popular acclaim as romantic latter day buccaneers. This Leonaur book is based upon writings collated by the British Admiralty after the war, which was, in turn, gathered from German sources within the history of the activities of the Imperial German Navy. The book describes each vessel and details its voyages and battles, together with interesting operational and logistic information. Included in this Leonaur edition, to enhance the text for modern readers, are many pictures not included in any of the original texts.

Описание: This new volume explores the history of an important, but neglected sector of the Western Front between 1914 and 1918 in the context of its portrayal in the media. The analysis sheds new light on of the role of the mass media in generating national mythologies.
