Описание: Heidegger's lecture course at the University of Marburg in the summer of 1925, an early version of Being and Time (1927), offers a unique glimpse into the motivations that prompted the writing of this great philosopher's master work and the presuppositions that gave shape to it. The book embarks upon a provisional description of what Heidegger calls "Dasein," the field in which both being and time become manifest. Heidegger analyzes Dasein in its everydayness in a deepening sequence of terms: being-in-the-world, worldhood, and care as the being of Dasein. The course ends by sketching the themes of death and conscience and their relevance to an ontology that makes the phenomenon of time central. Theodore Kisiel's outstanding translation premits English-speaking readers to appreciate the central importance of this text in the development of Heidegger's thought.

Описание: The Prolegomena is often dismissed as Kant's failed attempt to popularize his philosophy, but as the essays collected here show, there is much to be gained from a careful study of the work. The essays explore the distinctive features of the Prolegomena, including Kant's discussion of philosophical methodology, his critical idealism, the nature of experience, his engagement with Hume, the nature of the self, the relation between geometry and physics, and what we cognize about God. Newly commissioned for this volume, the essays as a whole offer sophisticated and innovative interpretations of the Prolegomena, and cast Kant's critical philosophy in a new light.
Описание: This book evaluates the importance of various historical sources and discusses their role in the creation and transmission of scientific knowledge. It presents an annotated translation of the introductory words given by Johan Ludvig Heiberg to his translation of the works of Archimedes. Further, it offers English translations of and commentaries on selected fundamental works by Ernst Hellinger and Gabrio Piola, which lay the groundwork for the modern theory of advanced materials, and also examines the criteria used to evaluate scientific works.

Описание:
The present book addresses the background, rationale, general structure, and particular aims and arguments characterizing our third and last volume about "humor" and "cruelty". A guiding foray is provided into the vast expert literature that can be retrieved in the Western humanities and social sciences on these two terms. Pivotal thinkers and crucial notions are duly identified, highlighted, and examined. Apposite subsidiary references are also included, especially with regard to psychodynamics and clinical psychology, existentialism, feminism, liberalism, Marxism, and representative recent studies in the philosophy of humor and its cognates. The stage is thus set for the exploration and assessment of the conflicts between humor and cruelty unfolding in Part 2 of Volume 3. Being the philosophical terminus of our entire research project, Volume 3 counterbalances, complements, and, occasionally, complexifies the numerous forms of mutual cooperation between humor and cruelty that the preceding Volume 2 had unearthed and discussed.
Описание: "Nature as Limit" provides an account of Nature in terms of the collapse of the subject-object
binary, presenting Heidegger’s work as a series of prolegomena toward a
prospective ecological thought. This begins with a critical re-evaluation of the homology
Heidegger discovers between the essence of technology and the trajectory of Western
metaphysics, with special attention paid to his return to Aristotle’s Physics in 1939. The
essence of technology is, in fact, an intrinsic aspect of Nature. It lies at the heart of all
structured appearance as an autonomous occurrence in which humankind is entangled but
cannot master. Examining and expanding upon the consequences of this, the book
reimagines technics and our understanding of Nature as ‘technical image’ and beyond.
The question of Nature becomes that of an unwavering finitude within the endless
recycling of formal phenomenality. Transfiguring Heidegger’s concept of Ereignis and
critiquing in passing some of its accepted interpretations, the book argues that Nature is a
process or occurrence of limitation. It is a delimitation that both sets in motion and keeps
in motion without itself ever coming into the picture. It is an uncapturable immanence in
the total field of phenomena, irreducible to any presence and thus implicating an
‘absence’ at the heart of every occurrence, an incompletedness of any naturalism. This
view of Nature is further explored through a series of figures of localization—Dasein,
thing, clearing, et al.— that raise strange and compelling questions about time, space, and
history, and which lead finally to a re-characterization of Dasein as an inversion of its
environment as ecological awareness. These adventurous considerations push at the outer
limits of what Heidegger’s philosophy can accomplish and conclude with a vision of how
the motifs of death, poetry, and the unknowable help form the fundamental questions of
ecological thought. "Nature as Limit" confronts Heidegger’s use of language on its own
terms, exploring the full breadth of its intention, then proceeds to a demystification of
that language, a reappraisal that offers a new lexicon for future readers. At stake is a
reading of a rather unfamiliar Heidegger that nonetheless remains faithful to his text and
rigorous in its reconstruction.

Описание: Adrian Johnston’s trilogy Prolegomena to Any Future Materialism aims to forge a thoroughly materialist yet antireductive theory of subjectivity. In this second volume, A Weak Nature Alone, Johnston focuses on the philosophy of nature required for such a theory. This volume is guided by a fundamental question: How must nature be rethought so that human minds and freedom do not appear to be either impossible or inexplicable within it? Asked differently: How must the natural world itself be structured such that sapient subjects in all their distinctive peculiarities emerged from and continue to exist within this world? In A Weak Nature Alone, Johnston develops his transcendental materialist account of nature through engaging with and weaving together five main sources of inspiration: Hegelian philosophy, Marxist materialism, Freudian-Lacanian metapsychology, Anglo-American analytic neo-Hegelianism, and evolutionary theory and neurobiology. Johnston argues that these seemingly (but not really) strange bedfellows should be brought together so as to construct a contemporary ontology of nature. Through this ontology, nonnatural human subjects can be seen to arise in an immanent, bottom-up fashion from nature itself.
