Описание: TRENDS IN LINGUISTICS is a series of books that open new perspectives in our understanding of language. The series publishes state-of-the-art work on core areas of linguistics across theoretical frameworks as well as studies that provide new insights by building bridges to neighbouring fields such as neuroscience and cognitive science. TRENDS IN LINGUISTICS considers itself a forum for cutting-edge research based on solid empirical data on language in its various manifestations, including sign languages. It regards linguistic variation in its synchronic and diachronic dimensions as well as in its social contexts as important sources of insight for a better understanding of the design of linguistic systems and the ecology and evolution of language. TRENDS IN LINGUISTICS publishes monographs and outstanding dissertations as well as edited volumes, which provide the opportunity to address controversial topics from different empirical and theoretical viewpoints. High quality standards are ensured through anonymous reviewing.

The purpose of the series is to present collections of specific studies on particular topics in a format that facilitates cross-linguistic and cross-theoretical comparison. Each handbook takes up a single theme and includes a questionnaire; both the individual studies and the summary paper synthesizing the results of the comparison reflect the structure of the questionnaire. Unlike other handbooks that consist of chapters organized by theoretical topics, the handbooks of this series present empirical studies on various languages uniformly structured to facilitate comparison. A typical volume examines a grammatical feature or construction across languages (such as interrogative structures or numeral constructions), offers a survey of that feature through in-depth analyses cast in roughly the same theoretical framework, and formulates cross-linguistic generalizations. The handbooks also include accounts of constructions cast in different theoretical frameworks so that the empirical differences among the theories can be assessed and their similarities revealed.
The volumes are accessible to the general academic community of linguists, meet the needs of students on the undergraduate and graduate level, and are of interest to specialists as well. Each volume is self-contained. Some of the volumes have associated websites to provide additional materials.

Описание: This book presents a critical assessment of research on grammaticalization, a central element in the process by which grammars are created. Leading scholars discuss its core theoretical and methodological bases, report on work in the field, and point to directions for new research. They represent every relevant theoretical perspective and approach.
Grammaticalization has often been described as a gradual phenomenon. While many studies have discussed the quantitative aspects of grammaticalization, there has been little to no work that has tried to propose a way of measuring degrees of grammaticalization. This book addresses this gap by proposing a corpus-based approach to the measurement of grammaticalization, using binary logistic regression modelling.
Such an approach has theoretical benefits as it can provide empirical evidence for the gradience and gradualness of grammaticalization. It can help substantiate observations that have been done on the basis of case studies so far, such as the hypothesized unidirectionality of grammaticalization. In addition, as the methods proposed in this book rely on corpus-based data only, it offers a way of comparing grammaticalization across multiple languages, which is currently a challenging endeavour.
What this book hopes to achieve is to start a discussion on the measurement of grammaticalization. To draw a parallel, the field of morphological productivity has greatly benefited from the discussions (and disputes) regarding how its object of study should be measured, and I believe that so will the field of grammaticalization.

Описание: This volume explores the way in which grammaticalization processes converge and differ across languages and language areas. Chapters systemically explore these processes languages of Africa, Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americas, and in creole languages, revealing a number of unique pathways as well as shared features.
