Описание:

This volume aims to provide information about
and interpretations of the concept of evidentiality
lexically realized with certain verbs and
applied to the genre of medical posters. More
specifically, issues relating to how knowledge
is conveyed through language will be discussed
and how evidence for such knowledge is linguistically
transmitted in a set of specialised texts.
This study uses some of the possibilities offered
by electronic corpora in conjunction with concordance
tools, which allow quantitative analysis.
Thanks to this quantitative analysis, followed
by a qualitative interpretation of the
findings, we could detect the pragmatic function
these evidential items have in contextual use,
allowing us to see that evidentiality in medical
discourse is intended in a slightly different way
from general discourse.

Описание: Evidential Decision Theory is a radical theory of rational decision-making. It recommends that instead of thinking about what your decisions *cause*, you should think about what they *reveal*. This Element explains in simple terms why thinking in this way makes a big difference, and argues that doing so makes for *better* decisions.

Описание: Is evil evidence against the existence of God? Even if God and evil are compatible, it remains hotly contested whether evil renders belief in God unreasonable. The Evidential Argument from Evil presents five classic statements on this issue by eminent philosophers and theologians and places them in dialogue with eleven original essays reflecting new thinking by these and other scholars. The volume focuses on two versions of the argument. The first affirms that there is no reason for God to permit either certain specific horrors or the variety and profusion of undeserved suffering. The second asserts that pleasure and pain, given their biological role, are better explained by hypotheses other than theism.
Contributors include William P. Alston, Paul Draper, Richard M. Gale, Daniel Howard-Snyder, Alvin Plantinga, William L. Rowe, Bruce Russell, Eleonore Stump, Richard G. Swinburne, Peter van Inwagen, and Stephen John Wykstra.

Описание: How do archaeologists work with the data they identify as a record of the cultural past? How are these data collected and construed as evidence? What is the impact on archaeological practice of new techniques of data recovery and analysis, especially those imported from the sciences? To answer these questions, the authors identify close-to-the-ground principles of best practice based on an analysis of examples of evidential reasoning in archaeology that are widely regarded as successful, contested, or instructive failures. They look at how archaeologists put old evidence to work in pursuit of new interpretations, how they construct provisional foundations for inquiry as they go, and how they navigate the multidisciplinary ties that make archaeology a productive intellectual trading zone. This case-based approach is predicated on a conviction that archaeological practice is a repository of considerable methodological wisdom, embodied in tacit norms and skilled expertise – wisdom that is rarely made explicit except when contested, and is often obscured when questions about the status and reach of archaeological evidence figure in high-profile crisis debates.

Evidential Uncertainty in Causation in Negligence

Описание: This book undertakes an analysis of academic and judicial responses to the problem of evidential uncertainty in causation in negligence. It seeks to bring clarity to what has become a notoriously complex area by adopting a clear approach to the function of the doctrine of causation within a corrective justice-based account of negligence liability. It first explores basic causal models and issues of proof, including the role of statistical and epidemiological evidence, in order to isolate the problem of evidential uncertainty more precisely. Application of Richard Wright's NESS test to a range of English caselaw shows it to be more comprehensive than the 'but for' test that currently dominates, thereby reducing the need to resort to additional tests, such as the Wardlaw test of material contribution to harm, whose scope and meaning are uncertain. The book builds on this foundation to explore the solution to a range of problems of evidential uncertainty, focusing on the Fairchild principle and the idea of risk as damage, as well as the notion of loss of a chance in medical negligence which is often seen as analogous with 'increase in risk', in an attempt to bring coherence to this area of the law. Описание:

This book is not about religion, and David Young is not a christian. This story is the result of three years of perpetual synchronicities and esoteric messages that came to Young through his artwork and evidential channeling, which ultimately guided him toward the hidden truth behind history's most monumental deception. Jesus and Mary Magdalena's incredible journey of love, family and survival is masterfully illustrated with breathtaking images of Young's art and clearly explained in the narrative, shaking the foundation of a blindly accepted tale created many years ago. Every page of this 13" x 10" book is in full color with paintings that were created with divine guidance to depict the truth of what really happened to history's most misrepresented people, Jesus and Mary Magdalena. This unconventional book will soothe you with 90 minutes of heavenly music, activated through 12 QR codes, while inspiring you with a new mind-expanding concept of true historical events.

Описание:

This edited volume brings together work on the evidential systems of
Tibetan languages. This includes diachronic research, synchronic
description of systems in individual Tibetan varieties and papers
addressing broader theoretical or typological questions. Evidentiality in
Tibetan languages interacts with other features of modality,
interactional context and speaker knowledge states in ways that provide
important perspectives for typologists and our general understanding of
evidential systems. This book provides the first sustained attempt to
capture this complexity and diversity from both a synchronic and
diachronic perspective.

Описание: This second book by Donald D. Yackel continues the format and organization of his first, The Idling Bulldozer and Other Paddling Adventures. However, unlike that offering, this one starts with a personal reflection on the author`s connection to boats and the water. Subsequent chapters describe paddling trips in Canada, Costa Rica, Florida, and Mexico. While each chapter provides a glimpse into part of the world most readers will never visit, the author`s vivid descriptions will take you there. As one reviewer put it: "I am an armchair adventurer. I loved the descriptions of the various areas in the U.S. and Canada...the terrain, the wildlife...places I will never see...places most people will never see or experience. The challenges of paddling in various places and conditions, the hardships, the challenges and the rewards make for a great and interesting read." A second reviewer writes: "Even if you are not a paddling enthusiast, the stories are fun! Don writes in a conversational tone...it`s like you`re sitting next to him while he tells his stories." Each tale is a memoir of what the author experienced on the adventure: what he saw, what he did, how it felt, whom he traveled with, and the dangers and rewards experienced. Whether you are a veteran kayaker, a rank beginner, or have never been in a boat before, you can find something to relate to in this book.

Описание: "Evidence-based education" (EBE) is a catchline for policy makers and school leaders alike, with its advocates promoting their work as being "rigorous" and "scientific". The chapters in this book place this approach in context and challenge whether the arguments it leads to live up to the hype.
