Описание: High-Risk Feminism in Colombia documents the experiences of grassroots womens organizations that united to demand gender justice during and in the aftermath of Colombias armed conflict. In doing so, it illustrates a little-studied phenomenon: women whose experiences with violence catalyze them to mobilize and resist as feminists, even in the face of grave danger. Despite a well-established tradition of studying women in war, we tend to focus on their roles as mothers or carers, as peacemakers, or sometimes as revolutionaries. This book explains the gendered underpinnings of why women engage in feminist mobilization, even when this takes place in a domain of losses that exposes them to high levels of risk. It follows four womens organizations who break with traditional gender norms and defy armed groups social and territorial control, exposing them to retributive punishment. It provides rich evidence to document how women are able to surmount the barriers to mobilization when they frame their actions in terms of resistance, rather than fear.

Описание: In the late nineteenth century, Italians and Eastern European Jews joined millions of migrants around the globe who left their countries to take advantage of the demand for unskilled labor in rapidly industrializing nations, including the United States. Many Americans of northern and western European ancestry regarded these newcomers as biologically and culturally inferior--unassimilable--and by 1924, the United States had instituted national origins quotas to curtail immigration from southern and eastern Europe. Weaving together political, social, and transnational history, Maddalena Marinari examines how, from 1882 to 1965, Italian and Jewish reformers profoundly influenced the country's immigration policy as they mobilized against the immigration laws that marked them as undesirable.

Strategic alliances among restrictionist legislators in Congress, a climate of anti-immigrant hysteria, and a fickle executive branch often left these immigrants with few options except to negotiate and accept political compromises. As they tested the limits of citizenship and citizen activism, however, the actors at the heart of Marinari's story shaped the terms of debate around immigration in the United States in ways we still reckon with today.

Описание: This book marks a major contribution since the work of Tan Liok Eee (1997) on the Dongjiaozong movement in Malaysia. The author's familiarity with both popular and academic writings in Mandarin has yielded rare, first-hand, and often bottom-up views on the Dongjiaozong movement from actors directly involved in the movement. As a result, readers get a better understanding of the personalities, leadership dynamics, creative strategies of control and resistance within this social movement as well as its ability to exploit political vulnerabilities and interpersonal relationships to cajole, negotiate and arm-twist the state in its bid to defend Chinese education in Malaysia. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of political science and Malaysian studies, in general, and the study of state-society relations and social movements in non-liberal democratic contexts, in particular." - Associate Professor Goh Beng Lan, Department of Southeast Asian Studies, National University of Singapore"Ang Ming Chee's insightful examination of the decades-long Chinese education movement in Malaysia is a powerful example of scholarship exemplifying deep passion and rigorous analysis. This important study will be a major reference for those interested in Chinese politics in Malaysia and the social resistance movements under non-democratic conditions for years to come."- Associate Professor Jamie S. Davidson, Department of Political Science, National University of Singapore
