Описание: This ten-volume edition represents the definitive collection of extant Rossetti correspondence, an outstanding primary witness to the range of ideas and opinions that shaped Rossetti's art and poetry. The largest collection of Rossetti's correspondence ever to be published, it features all known surviving letters, a total of almost 5,800 to over 330 recipients, and includes 2,000 previously unpublished letters by Rossetti and selected letters to him. Investigates the latent and manifest traces of the East in Pre-Raphaelite literature and culture
The Pre-Raphaelites and Orientalism: Language and Cognition in Remediations of the East redefines the task of interpreting the East in the late nineteenth century. Weaving together literary, linguistic and cognitive analyses of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, illustrations and writings, socio-cultural investigations of the Orient, and rhetorical considerations about Arabian forms of writing, the terms of critical debate surrounding the East are redefined. It takes as a starting point Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) in order to investigate the latent and manifest traces of the East in Pre-Raphaelite literature and culture. As the book demonstrates, the Pre-Raphaelites and their associates appeared to be the most eligible representatives of a profoundly conservative manifestation of the Orient, of its mystic aura, criminal underworld, and feminine sensuality, or to put it into Arabic terms, of its aja'ib (marvels), mutalibun (treasure-hunters) and hur al-ayn (femmes fatales).

Описание: The present book will examine the relationship between Tennyson's poetry and some Pre-Raphaelite poems and paintings. The writer throughout the book uses Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott", "Mariana," "The Blessed Damozel" and "The Palace of Art" and compares and contrasts them with the Pre-Raphaelite paintings and poetry to find out to what extent these poems inspired the artist of the Victorian age. Many painters of this era have applied the existing imagery of Tennyson poems in their works. Many aspects of Tennyson's poems are significant as Victorian pieces of writing which include an examination of the role of women or feminism, love, spiritual matters. The Pre-Raphaelite poets or painters applied these various aspects in their works. Tennyson has dominantly influenced their arts. The purpose of the current book is to find out the relationship between Tennyson's poems and the Pre-Raphaelite works of art and to discover his poems' influence on different forms of Pre-Raphaelite arts from different perspectives.

Описание: This vibrant collection of essays claims that a complex network of texts by critics, biographers and diarists established the credibility and influence of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Throughout the twentieth century, Modernist taste failed to acknowledge the achievement of oppositional groupings such as the Pre-Raphaelites. The essays collected here, however, reveal that the British group anticipated later avant-gardes by using the written word to configure for itself a radical artistic identity. Public and critics alike were scandalized by the radicalism of Pre-Raphaelite painting, its unflinching portrayal of historical figures and of contemporary life, and its irreverent attitude to artistic convention. Pre-Raphaelitism's innovations were not confined to style: new forms of artistic identity and behaviour were explored. As the contributors interrogate the texts through which Pre-Raphaelitism was constructed, they demonstrate that the movement's wide influence as a cultural phenomenon derived from the interplay between exhibited works and critical discourse. Applying a range of sophisticated methodologies from the fields of literary studies, art history, and cultural studies, these interdisciplinary essays uncover the neglected role of texts in the success of the Pre-Raphaelite rebellion and argue in favor of a new centrality for this movement in the history of nineteenth-century European culture.
