Описание: The soldiers who fought the American Indian tribes This book describes the exploits of the soldiers of the United States Army who fought the indigenous native Indian tribes for the dominance of the North American heartland in the years following the American Civil War. It concentrates particularly on those whose acts of outstanding bravery earned them the highest award it is possible to bestow upon an American soldier-the Congressional Medal of Honour. The contents of this volume were originally part of a two volume work which recounted the actions of the soldiers and sailors of the American Army and Navy from the time the award was created, through the American Civil War and covering actions and campaigns up to and including the Spanish American War and the war in China at the turn of the 20th century. What made this present selection particularly appealing was the large number of fine illustrations which appeared within the text to support the descriptions of the actions. As is often the case with 19th century books the illustrations were not given the prominence or focus that modern day readers might prefer. This Leonaur edition seeks to rectify this. These wonderful accounts of high action are compellingly told and this book is an essential addition to the libraries of all those interested in frontier America and the outstanding exploits of the soldiers in 'dirty shirt blue' who won a continent. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.
Описание: The Medal of Honor may be America’s highest military decoration, but all Medals of Honor are not created equal. The medal has in fact consisted of several distinct decorations at various times and has involved a number of competing statutes and policies that rewarded different types of heroism. In this book, the first comprehensive look at the medal’s historical, legal, and policy underpinnings, Dwight S. Mears charts the complex evolution of these developments and differences over time. The Medal of Honor has had different qualification thresholds at different times, and indeed three separate versions—one for the army and two for the navy—existed contemporaneously between World Wars I and II. Mears traces these versions back to the medal’s inception during the Civil War and continues through the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—along the way describing representative medal actions for all major conflicts and services as well as legislative and policy changes contemporary to each period. He gives particular attention to retroactive army awards for the Civil War; World War I legislation that modernized and expanded the army’s statutory award authorization; the navy’s grappling with both a combat and noncombat Medal of Honor through much of the twentieth century; the Vietnam-era act that ended noncombat awards and largely standardized the Medal of Honor among all services; and the perceived decline of Medals of Honor awarded in the ongoing Global War on Terror.Mears also explores the tradition of awards via legislative bills of relief; extralegislative awards; administrative routes to awards through Boards of Correction of Military Records; restoration of awards previously revoked by the army in 1917; judicial review of military actions in federal court; and legislative actions intended to atone for historical discrimination against ethnic minorities. Unprecedented in scope and depth, his work is sure to be the definitive resource on America’s highest military honor.

Описание: Jewish Americans have fought in every war and conflict to protect the liberties and freedoms of their country, despite anti-Semitism and prejudices they encountered. Across differences of time, place, and individual background, the heroic service members profiled in this work share a common factor beyond their Jewish heritage: their deeds moved a grateful nation to bestow upon them its greatest military honor. In Jewish Medal of Honor Recipients: American Heroes, veteran author Michael Lee Lanning presents the stories and official citations of Jewish service members who joined the US Armed Forces’ most exclusive group through their bravery and self-sacrifice in combat. From the total to date of 3,526 service members who have received the Medal of Honor, Lanning has identified 17 recipients who are confirmed to be Jewish, 11 more who are thought to be Jewish but whose ethnicity has not been fully verified, and another five who were initially recognized as Jewish at the time of award but who have since been determined not to be. Each of these 33 men receives individual attention as Lanning delves into their backgrounds with brief biographies to show the different paths that brought them to their place on the list of honor. He includes the full award citation for each as well.Jewish Medal of Honor Recipients: American Heroes is the result of thorough review of archival sources, interviews with surviving family members, newspaper accounts, and military service records, providing testimony to extraordinary deeds, service, and sacrifice.

Описание: In The Greatest Medal of Honor Stories Ever Told, editor Tom McCarthy has pulled together some of the finest writings about heroes awarded the highest military honor that capture readers imaginations. The one thing the heroes in this collection have in common-from the bloody battlefields of the Civil War through the lonely mountains of Afghanistan-is uncommon valor. Each of the men in these stories had the courage to calmly stare death in the face and move on-to do what they had to because that was their duty and the lives of others meant more to them than their own. Chosen from hundreds of accounts of singular devotion to duty, the stories in Medal of Honor stand out for their jaw-dropping tales of bravery. They are the best. No small feat.

Описание: Craig Larman again delivers a clear path for students to learn object-oriented analysis and design through his clear and precise writing style. Larman teaches newcomers to OOA/D learn how to "think in objects" by presenting three iterations of a single, cohesive case study, incrementally introducing the requirements and OOA/D activities, principles, and patterns that are most critical to success.
