In this book, Massimiliano Vitiello situates the life and career of the Ostrogothic queen Amalasuintha (c. 494/5-535), daughter of Theoderic the Great, in the context of the transitional time, after the fall of Rome, during which new dynastic regimes were experimenting with various forms of political legitimation. A member of the Gothic elite raised in the Romanized palace of Ravenna, Amalasuintha married her father's chosen successor and was set to become a traditional Gothic queen—a helpmate and advisor to her husband, the Visigothic prince Eutharic—with no formal political role of her own. But her early widowhood and the subsequent death of her father threw her into a position unprecedented in the Gothic world: a regent mother who assumed control of the government. During her regency, Amalasuintha clashed with a conservative Gothic aristocracy who resisted her leadership, garnered support among her Roman and pro-Roman subjects, defended Italy from the ambitions of other kings, and negotiated the expansionistic designs of Justinian and Theodora. When her son died unexpectedly at a young age, she undertook her most dangerous political enterprise: forming an unmarried coregency with her cousin, Theodahad, whom she raised to the throne. His final betrayal would cost Amalasuintha her rule and her life. Vitiello argues that Amalasuintha's story reveals a key phase in the transformation of queenship in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, a time in which royal women slowly began exercising political power. Assessing the ancient sources for Amalasuintha's biography, Cassiodorus, Procopius, Gregory of Tours, and Jordanes, Vitiello demonstrates the ways in which her life and public image show the influence of late Roman and Byzantine imperial models on the formation of female political power in the post-Roman world.

As six cousins mourn the death of their grandfather, their uncle, known as the Prophet, summons them to a meeting. In a remote family retreat, he reveals the secret history of their family and the prominent position their grandfather held as Meglio di Buono of the International Guardians of the Swords of Valor. The Prophet sends them back through time to pivotal points in history to obtain the four missing Swords of Valor, believed to have been stolen by the Apostles of Azazel.
The consequences of failure mean far more than their own deaths. All of humanity could be destroyed. Any hope of succeeding lies in the power of the swords, their courage, and each other. Encountering some of the most influential figures of history, from Joan of Arc to Christ himself, the cousins must confront the reality behind everything they thought they knew, before the Apostles of Azazel can plunge the world forever into darkness.
A historic tale of valor, virtue, family honor, faith, and the power of a humble spirit in a world dominated by pride and the love of power, Season of the Swords is the beginning of an epic that spans the vast expanse of time, raising the inevitable question:
What if you had the power to change history?

The Sellers brothers, Samuel and George, came to North America in 1682 as part of the Quaker migration to William Penn’s new province on the shores of the Delaware River. Across more than two centuries, the Sellers family—especially Samuel’s descendants Nathan, Escol, Coleman, and William—rose to prominence as manufacturers, engineers, social reformers, and urban and suburban developers, transforming Philadelphia into a center of industry and culture. They led a host of civic institutions including the Franklin Institute, Abolition Society, and University of Pennsylvania. At the same time, their vast network of relatives and associates became a leading force in the rise of American industry in Ohio, Georgia, Tennessee, New York, and elsewhere.Engineering Philadelphia is a sweeping account of enterprise and ingenuity, economic development and urban planning, and the rise and fall of Philadelphia as an industrial metropolis. Domenic Vitiello tells the story of the influential Sellers family, placing their experiences in the broader context of industrialization and urbanization in the United States from the colonial era through World War II. The story of the Sellers family illustrates how family and business networks shaped the social, financial, and technological processes of industrial capitalism. As Vitiello documents, the Sellers family and their network profoundly influenced corporate and federal technology policy, manufacturing practice, infrastructure and building construction, and metropolitan development. Vitiello also links the family’s declining fortunes to the deindustrialization of Philadelphia—and the nation—over the course of the twentieth century.

The Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the City It Made recounts the history of America's first stock exchange and the ways it shaped the growth and decline of the city around it. Founded in 1790, the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, its member firms, and the companies they financed had profound impacts on the city's place in the world economy. At its start, the exchange and its members helped spur the development of the early United States, its financial sector, and its westward expansion. During the nineteenth century, they invested in making Philadelphia the center of industrial America, raising capital for the railroads and coal mines that connected cities to one another and built a fossil fuel-based economy. After financing the Civil War, they underwrote the growth of the modern metropolis, its transportation infrastructure, utility systems, and real estate development. At the turn of the twentieth century, stagnation of the exchange contributed to Philadelphia's loss of power in the national and world economy. This original interpretation of the roots of deindustrialization holds important lessons for other cities that have declined. The exchange's revival following World War II is a remarkable story, but it also illustrates the limits of economic development in postindustrial cities. Unlike earlier eras, the exchange's fortunes diverged from those of the city around it. Ultimately, it became part of a larger, global institution when it merged with NASDAQ in 2008. Far more than a history of a single institution, The Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the City It Made traces the evolving relationship between the exchange and the city. For people concerned with cities and their development, this study offers a long-term history of the public-private partnerships and private sector-led urban development popular today. More generally, it traces the networks of firms and institutions revealed by the securities market and its participants. Herein lies a critical and understudied part of the history of metropolitan economic development.
In The Sanctuary City, Domenic Vitiello argues that sanctuary means much more than the limited protections offered by city governments or churches sheltering immigrants from deportation. It is a wider set of protections and humanitarian support for vulnerable newcomers. Sanctuary cities are the places where immigrants and their allies create safe spaces to rebuild lives and communities, often through the work of social movements and community organizations or civil society.
Philadelphia has been an important center of sanctuary and reflects the growing diversity of American cities in recent decades. One result of this diversity is that sanctuary means different things for different immigrant, refugee, and receiving communities. Vitiello explores the migration, settlement, and local and transnational civil society of Central Americans, Southeast Asians, Liberians, Arabs, Mexicans, and their allies in the region across the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Together, their experiences illuminate the diversity of immigrants and refugees in the United States and what is at stake for different people, and for all of us, in our immigration debates.

The world as they know it is gone. All of their efforts to save it had given the demon Watcher Azazel the very key he needed to bring the world to its knees. The power of the Swords of Valor is exhausted. The quantum computer, key to their operations, was malfunctioning. The Gray Champion had been struck down by Azazel, and the quantum essence of their grandmother had been cruelly abducted. Power to the Keeping Room had failed, plunging them into a darkness that flooded not only the eyes, but the soul, while the world above them burned. Despair, hopelessness, and uncertainty were all that remained in the hearts of the once-courageous Guardians.
In the depths of their bitterest defeat, a Teacher comes to them, offering guidance shrouded in mystery. The robed, enigmatic figure may be their only hope to save their grandmother, and the world, but none of them are certain this Teacher can be trusted. Deception is the most powerful tool in the arsenal of their enemy, and this, too, could be nothing more than a demonic game to lead them to further despair. Journeying one last time through history, they must seek their ancestor and originator of their line of the Guardians of the Swords of Valor, Joseph of Arimathea. Only through him can they find the holy relics needed to defeat Azazel once and for all; the Stone of Jacob, the Holy Grail, and the mythical Sword Above All.
Under the eyes of the archangels themselves, face to face against the Watcher Azazel, the Guardians must wage the final battle against evil. Victory is their only option, for there will be no second chance in this ultimate confrontation. The salvation of all mankind rests in their hands.

Relationships can be exhilarating, devastating, rejuvenating, and terrifying. Sometimes these all happen in the same breath, and other times they slowly materialize over the course of several years.
In The Zero Years, author Domenic Blair offers a deeply personal set of autobiographical poems based on a series of life- and soul-changing events. Centered on the rise and fall of a single relationship, these poetic verses trace the love, loss, depression, and growth surrounding a passionate yet ultimately unsuccessful romance.
Using rhythmical structures in addition to free verse, these poems openly express intimacy and passion as well as darker topics such as drug addiction and anxiety to illustrate Blair's profound journey.
Broken into various sections including "Her Smile," "Her Taste," "The Last Promise to Break," and "Older Ghosts," these pages chronicle a couple's relationship from their initial meeting, to falling in love, to breaking up, to reigniting their passion only to have it left in ruins again.
Full of life, pain, and heartbreak, Blair puts his soul to words to help bring healing to anyone looking for meaning in the midst of loss.
