Описание: John Chrysostom (347 - 407), is considered by many to be the greatest preacher of the East. Born in 4th-century Antioch, he became quite pious, studying theology as a youth and then retiring to the wilderness as a hermit, until his extreme asceticism required him to return to Antioch. There he was ordained a priest, and became famous for his sermons, particularly on the Bible. These homilies on the Gospel of St. Matthew were thought to be delivered during this time period, when Antioch was part of the Byzantine empire. In 397 John Chrysostom would go on to become the archbishop of Constantinople. He remained at that post until his fiery preaching ran afoul of the empress Eudoxia and he was exiled to his untimely death in 407. The text for this book is drawn from the larger work, "Saint Chrysostom: homilies on the Gospel of Saint Matthew, by St. John Chrysostom (d. 407), translated by Philip Schaff (1819-1893), New York: Christian Literature Co., 1888." To this text have been added illustrations of the various Gospel events referred to.
Описание: Perfect for gift giving, the complete three-volume boxed set of In Your Eyes I See My Words gives readers an extraordinary opportunity to understand the vision of Pope Francis Volume 1 (1999–2004) Pope Francis is a first in many ways: the first pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit, the first Francis, the first child of immigrants from the Old World, nurtured and transformed by the New World and returned to lead the whole world. His eloquent homilies and speeches have inspired the faithful of Argentina for decades, largely through his gift of oratory, tracing back to his time as a bishop, archbishop, and cardinal in his home country. Published in English for the first time in their entirety and with contextual annotations, In Your Eyes I See My Words, Volume 1 collects his homilies and speeches from 1999 to 2004. This illuminating collection presents an extraordinary opportunity to understand the vision of a great pastor. His words bear witness to the deep experience of faith among God's people while also showcasing his own extraordinary ability to connect with communities of faith. Through these homilies and speeches, Pope Francis humbly displays his abilities as a wordsmith, a patient and attentive teacher, an inspired and faithful theologian, and a sensitive pastor uniquely attuned to his people, offering ready guidance for their journeys but also journeying with them. The first of a three-volume translation of Pope Francis's theological, pastoral, anthropological, and educational thought provides rich insights into the mind and theological unfolding of a spiritual leader who has become beloved across the globe. Within it we see Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio—later Pope Francis—ministering to the needs of the people while also engaging with the political, technological, and societal forces affecting their daily lives. Here is an ecclesial voice not afraid to challenge the politicians, the culture-makers, and media moguls—even his own ordained and lay church ministers—to live a life of faithfulness marked by justice, equality, and concern for the needs of everyone, urging all to rely on the "vitality of memory" and the "recovery of hope." In Your Eyes I See My Words also provides a glimpse into the political, social, and religious environment of Argentina and Latin America, providing a unique perspective on the issues confronting the faithful and how those issues motivated and nurtured Pope Francis's understanding of the Church's mission to all segments of society—particularly to those underrepresented and on the margins of history. Volume 2 (2005–2008) In Your Eyes I See My Words, Volume 2 contains Pope Francis's homilies and speeches from 2005 to 2008. Continuing what began in the first volume of this three-volume publication, Volume 2 shows Archbishop Bergoglio's growth as a pastor and a theologian/scholar in the midst of his people. At the same time, it shows him emerging as an international voice calling for changes in the way the Church carries out its ministry and its educational task on behalf of children, youth, adults, and Church ministers. In his homilies from Christmas, Easter, and especially in his response to the tragic fire and deaths of 194 people at the nightclub Republica Croma?on, we see Bergoglio speak passionately to his parishioners, challenging them with equal portions of tenderness and righteous anger. Perhaps uniquely, we also watch as his audiences, prominence, and influence grow globally, foreshadowing who he will become in 2013 when he is elected Pope. On the larger national and international scale, Bergoglio addresses various conferences, such as the Argentina Press Association and the Episcopal Conference of Argentina of which he was elected President in 2005 and served the maximum possible term of six years. We see and read as his work takes him outside his country to Rome (2007) at the Pontifical Commission for Latin America; to Brazil (2007), where his presentation on the Crisis of Civi

Описание: This book deals with the ecclesiological themes in the writings of Mar Jacob of Sarug, a West Syrian Church father, who lived in the sixth century. Mar Jacob of Sarug (ca. 451-521) stands next to Ephrem the Syrian as a poet theologian of the West Syrian Church. His writings, especially the metrical homilies, illustrate his imaginative reflections on Bible passages, demonstrating his theological perceptions. This book deals with the ecclesiological themes in Mar Jacob’s writings. The primary sources of this work are the festal homilies of Mar Jacob and his two metrical homilies on the Church, which the author himself has translated. Mar Jacob narrates his ecclesiological perceptions along with his explanations regarding the salvific acts of Christ. He looks at Christ as the one in whom the symbols find their actualization. The power and the efficacy of the Son is working through the Old Testament types. In the salvific acts, during the earthly journey of the Son, the types of the Old Testament are fully manifested. The Son's journey on the road of humility is symbolically depicted as the betrothal of the Son, the heavenly bridegroom, to His bride, the Church. Mar Jacob perceives the Church's presence in all the progressive moments of revelation, which are fully exhibited in Christ. His fundamental concepts regarding the Church are based on the fact that the Church is an essential part of the revelation of God's salvific plan, which is realized through the Son. He uses the imagery of the Church's motherhood to explain that the Church cannot be rightly considered apart from the divine economy of God, which is divulged through Christ and his work. The Church derives her authority to act from her origin as a work of the divine economy of salvation and exists on earth as a reality that reveals God's saving acts.
Описание: The Catholic Church today finds itself in the midst of a crisis. The flock is scattering, and while some shepherds bravely set off in search of those lost and wandering sheep, others drive them, and many more, further from the fold.
But the Church has seen and weathered numerous crises in its two millennia, and always one or more of its priests and bishops stood up and rallied the faithful: whether to rebuke an Emperor or oppose a policy, encourage the faithful or defend the faith, bishops and priests ascended the pulpit and delivered sermons that met the pressing needs of their own times, sermons which should be read and remembered by Catholics of all times. You will find comfort within these pages as you read the words of these heroic pastors of souls including:
St Ambrose of Milan, St Augustine, St John Chrysostom, St Edmund Campion, Pope St John Paul II, . . . and seven others.
Enter into the minds and thoughts of some of the bravest, most eloquent, homilists the Church has produced. More than one was killed for the words they uttered which you will find in these pages. But they counted not the cost.
Guided by Rev. Paul D. Scalia's introduction and commentaries, you will come to see that the Church has faced crises and survived, even thrived, before. In fact, it is one of the marks of her authenticity, as it has often been said, that no mere human institution could have survived the persecutions and scandals that the Catholic Church has withstood over 2000 years.
If you are a priest or bishop, just maybe reading these words of men not unlike yourself, will inspire you to stand and be counted and preach God's word from the pulpit without counting the cost.

Описание: Charles Borromeo (1538-1584) became the driving force of reform within the Catholic Church in the wake of the Council of Trent following the Protestant Reformation and the primary reason Trent’s dramatic reforms were successful. His remarkable accomplishments in Milan as Archbishop became the model of reform for the rest of Western Europe. Change is never easy, but St. Charles’ approach – deeply biblical, personal, practical and centered on Christ – offers a road map of reform, even for today. Now for the first time in over 400 years a significant selection of his works appears in the English language. Chapter 1 offers three orations that St Charles gave as Archbishop of Milan to the other Bishops. These texts were among those that Pope Paul VI sent out to the Bishops of the world in 1963 during Vatican II. Chapter 2 contains a selection of homilies on the Eucharist and is followed by a collection of texts that treat the reform of the clergy. The final chapter presents Borromeo’s efforts at mobilizing the laity in their own reform. This translation is intended to be faithful to Borromeo’s Latin or Italian texts rendered into contemporary English.
"Study of the authoritative commentators on Sacred Scripture, and most particularly of the pericopes to be read out at the Sacred Liturgy has long been the custom of any of the places and communities where the celebration of the Divine Office or the "Liturgy of the Hours" is celebrated. This is true of the several liturgies of both East and West. Just as in the Old Testament Church, so too in the Church of the New Testament, it was unthinkable to approach the inspired word without some example or gloss or commentary. Thus did St Augustine learn to interpret the Sacred Scriptures, which at first seemed to his fine rhetor's ear to be so lacking in both dignity and content, by listening assiduously to the preaching of St. Ambrose in the cathedral of Milan. Ambrose's homilies struck deep into the heart of the North African seeker, and brought him finally to the instant crisis of his conversion to a life of chastity....
Holy conversation first, then sacred reading on our own (called lectio divina), will fit our hearts to receive the riches of the Fathers and the Holy Gospels.
So my advice to you, good reader, is to take up this lovely and useful volume which God in his Providence has placed in your hands and make it a locus of holy conversation with family and friends, fellow seekers of the truth. Holiness and enlightenment come largely to us through our friends of like mind. To be sure, solitude is also needful, but even there we are not alone, but are surrounded, as the Apostle says, 'by a cloud of witnesses.'" - Hugh Barbour, O.Praem.
Excerpt from the Introduction:
"The works of the Fathers of the Church form a rich library. Yet this field, so fertile in an abundance of delicious fruits, remains sterile for the greater number of the Catholic people, who perhaps know not what to choose, or are ignorant of the language of these holy writers. It seems to me that a collection of Homilies from different Fathers, arranged according to the Sundays and principal festivals of the ecclesiastical year, would be a great spiritual help to all Christians. This is the reason why I undertook this collection, and I have carefully endeavoured that it should be useful to all.... " - Rev. D.G. Hubert
