Le triomphe du Cid m'enchante. La "petite société" autour de Chateaubriand et de cette raseuse de Mme de Staël m'amuse à la folie. La mort de Lucien de Rubempré me consterne comme elle a consterné Wilde ou le baron de Charlus. Et, j'aime mieux le dire tout de suite, Proust me fait beaucoup rire. En un temps où les livres sont contestés et menacés par la montée de quelque chose d'obscur qui ressemble à la barbarie, cette histoire de la littérature n'a d'autre ambition que d'inviter le lecteur à en savoir un peu plus sur les œuvres passées ici en revue. Si elle donne à quelques jeunes gens d'aujourd'hui l'envie d'ouvrir un roman de Stendhal ou de Queneau ou de découvrir un poème d'Aragon, l'auteur aura atteint son but. Il aura largement été payé de son temps et de sa peine qui fut aussi un plaisir.
