Описание:
This book investigates the themes of female entrapment and the feminine gaze, and explores how they function as theatrical metaphors in Samuel Beckett’s later plays. It offers a novel perspective on love between Beckettian women, interrogating the trope of bodily sickness and its manifestations on the stage, and analysing how this relates to queer drives in women. Ambitious and thought-provoking, the book engages with the work of a range of theorists on psychoanalysis, feminism, sexuality, voyeurism and theatricality. The arguments presented here will be of interest to specialists in modernism and postmodernism, theatre, and gender studies.

Описание: In the fall of 2011, The Long Story Shorts One Act Festival was launched featuring performances of short plays written by undergraduate students in the Writing for the Screen and Stage minor, an interdisciplinary, dramatic writing program housed in the Department of Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Marking the first five years of the festival, this anthology showcases works written to be performed in ten minutes with a small production budget. The festival gives students a unique opportunity to participate in a collaborative, developmental environment led by experienced faculty and professional actors and directors, and the plays included here rise to the occasion. Whether they are humorous, poignant, surreal, or provocative, they demonstrate why the short play form has become so popular; why this event has become one the highlights of the university's cultural scene; and why the Writing for the Screen and Stage program has thrived.
Griselda Gambaro is arguably one of Argentina's most important dramatists, as well as a playwright of international significance, whose poetics not only interpret Argentine reality but transcend cultural and geographical borders. Despite international recognition, her plays remain little performed in the UK, an absence which makes this anthology of new translations a welcome contribution to British theatre culture, and to the English-speaking stage.
Prolific since the 1960s, Gambaro's plays are radical, subversive, and endlessly inventive in the use of form and theatricality. This is a theatre of resistance which has the potential to make searing comments on our own domestic and political contexts, an experience which may not be comfortable but is always vital. Dazzling, original, incisive and poetic, this anthology shows Griselda Gambaro at the height of her creative powers. Siamese Twins (1967) In this charged and forceful play, two brothers (one weak, one strong) play out a primal scene of envy, cruelty and torture as one exerts his power and aggression over the other. Mother by Trade (1999) In a stark process of truth and reconciliation, a daughter meets her estranged mother forty years after she abandoned her as an infant. As the Dream Dictates (2002) How can we look to the future if there is great trauma in our past? In this play, only the untethered thinking that comes with dreaming allows us the freedom to imagine. Asking Too Much (2004) In this enigmatic two-hander, the roles played by a man and a woman in the game of human attachment are renegotiated. Persistence (2007) Inspired by the real life event of the 2004 Beslan massacre in Russia, Persistence is a poetic play which goes to the heart of human tragedy. Dear Ibsen, I Am Nora (2013) Nora, the character created by Henrik Ibsen in A Doll's House, decides to confront her creator and to debate with him her own words and actions. The Gift (2015) Mбrgara is a woman with the gift of prophecy... but people do not believe her, even though she predicts hope for the world. Will humanity be able to hear her?

Описание: Despite the legacy of his eponymous award, Alfred Fagon's stage works have often been forgotten due to them not being available. This anthology of selected plays brings together his shorter works for the first time into one volume that expands his legacy and confirms his place as one of Britain's key writing talents of the twentieth century.
Originally an actor, Fagon’s writing for the stage, film and television grew throughout the early 1970s, before his breakaway hit TheDeath of A Black Man was produced at the Hampstead Theatre in 1975. Now one of British theatre's most well-known names, Fagon’s legacy is secured due in no small part to the commemorative award in his honour that was established following his death in 1986, to recognise Black British playwrights from the Caribbean, resident in the United Kingdom.
Brought together with a critical introduction from Dawn Walton OBE, this collection also includes a reflection and response from a former winner of the Alfred Fagon award, Juliet Gilkes Romero.
The plays include:
A Day in the Bristol Air Raid Shelter
Adventure Inside Thirteen
Four Hundred Pounds
No Soldiers in St Paul's
Shakespeare Country
Small World
Weekend Lovers
