Описание: Cosmic masers have been employed as unique probes of various astronomical objects and environments, ranging from newly born stars and evolved stars, the interstellar medium to active galactic nuclei. The maser scientific community is diverse and multidisciplinary but has long been tied together through the common background of physics and observational techniques. Time-domain studies from daily to decade-long monitoring of maser sources are also in progress with various telescopes from many different research teams in the world. Multiwavelength studies on maser sources have also proliferated, involving strong synergies with large facilities such as ALMA, JVLA, Gaia, and various VLBI networks. This volume gives a comprehensive, up-to-date review of cosmic masers as presented at IAU Symposium 380, the sixth international maser symposium. It also describes intensive discussion about ongoing and future projects relevant to maser science, such as global and new regional VLBI networks, SKA, and ngVLA.

Описание: The prime parameter determining the evolution of a star is its mass. Any modification to the stellar mass has large repercussions on its evolutionary path. Both low-mass and massive stars are known to power strong stellar winds at the end of their lives. These winds determine the type of the stellar end product and the amount by which these stars contribute to the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium, ultimately providing the building blocks of planets and life. A proper understanding of stellar evolution and the building blocks in the Universe cannot be achieved without a detailed understanding of stellar winds. IAU Symposium 366 provides an overview of state-of-the-art observational and theoretical studies on the origin of winds in low-mass and massive evolved stars, with topics including binarity, enrichment of the interstellar medium, astrochemistry, and theoretical, observational and numerical constraints on stellar outflows.

Описание: Our comprehension of the assembly and evolution of galaxies has witnessed remarkable advancements in recent years. While the Gaia spacecraft has provided unprecedented knowledge of the Milky Way's assembly, the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has propelled the study of galaxy evolution into an exciting new era. Early discoveries of JWST have revealed high-redshift galaxies that defy our expectations. These conundrums must be resolved through multi-wavelength observations, simulations, and theoretical models as emphasized in this volume, which contains a selection of papers presented at IAU Symposium 377, held about two years after the launch of JWST. These papers showcase studies of galaxy formation, evolution, interaction, chemical abundances and stellar populations from cosmic down to the Milky Way. These proceedings offer an updated view of recent advances and current problems and is suitable for both active researchers in the field and graduate students.

Описание: Star formation is relevant to nearly every area of astrophysics, from planetary science to galaxy evolution, yet the physical processes that determine the rates of star formation and its spatial and temporal distribution are still poorly understood. IAU Symposium 373 focuses on the impact that resolved studies of galaxies, both observational and theoretical, are having on the understanding of star formation on all scales. It highlights the latest advances in understanding star formation in its galactic context and how it drives galaxy evolution. A key advance has been the ability to spatially resolve the sub-kiloparsec scales on which star formation relations are established, bridging the gap between resolved studies in the local neighborhood and large-scale galaxy surveys. Alongside this, a new generation of cosmological simulations have helped to interpret these new data, providing new techniques for confronting them with observations. This volume shares these developments, for graduate students and researchers.
Описание: The period–luminosity relation (PLR) is an important relationship between the fundamental physical properties of many types of variable stars. Most recognisable is the PLR of Cepheids, which allows classical Cepheids to be used as primary distance indicators, establishing the traditional cosmic distance scale. Well-defined relationships also exist between the periods and luminosities of many other types of pulsating stars. IAU Symposium 376 discusses recent observational and theoretical results achieved by the continued, detailed scrutiny of the PLR, including its shape, calibration and dependence on stellar parameters and chemical abundances. Intrinsic PLR widths may offer unique insights into the physical processes shaping these relations and the underlying physical properties of the stars contributing to these relationships. This topic is timely, given the wealth of data recently obtained using state-of-the-art ground- and space-based facilities, high-impact Gaia data releases and the initial operations of the James Webb Space Telescope.
