Описание: Offers a new perspective for critical inquiries about the practices of consumption in (and of) Caribbean popular culture. The book revisits accepted representations of the Caribbean from `less respectable` segments of popular culture such as dancehall culture and `sistah lit` that proudly jettison any aspirations toward middle-class respectability.

Описание: Readers interested in the psychology of non-Western peoples will find this volume provocative in both descriptive and theoretical detail. The first book-length study of Siamese psychological life, it describes the members of an Asian peasant community whose dominant personality traits are aimed at the maintenance of their individuality, privacy, and sense of self-regard. In addition, it offers suggestions for handling many of the theoretical and technical problems crucial to cross-cultural personality research. Basing his research on two years of fieldwork in the Central Plain community of Bang Chan, Mr. Phillips offers a systematic analysis and comparison of two kinds of data: observations of the villagers' overt behavior in workaday social encounters, and their subjective responses to a special psychological test. Many readers will find particular value in his discussion of the design, translation, and implementation of psychological research methods in non-Western cultures. The author analyzes the central role of affability and play in the villagers' daily contacts, the use of politeness as a "social cosmetic," and the implications of this cosmetic for the inner lives of the Thai. He examines the villagers' readiness to become involved with others in the first place, and the sense of linkage that ties them together over time. He demonstrates how the individualistic tendencies of the Thai intrude on the stability of interpersonal relationships and how in the village of Bang Chan all social interaction is set within a framework of cosmic unpredictability, with human volition only one of the several indeterminate and uncontrollable factors in life. This "loosely structured" system of social relationships is seen to have its roots in early childhood, with strong support from both Hinayana Buddhist doctrine and the sociologically simple and undifferentiated nature of Bang Chan society. In presenting the psychological test results, the author examines the villagers' attitudes toward authority, dependency, and aggression; their anxieties and reactions to crises; and their dominant drives and wishes. These various issues are linked to the theoretical problem of "conformity" and to the basic human need for privacy and psychological isolation. Описание: The story of a union organizer who found a second career in community organizing and helped a Jim Crow city become a better place.

Ernest Thompson dedicated his life to organizing the powerless. This lively, illustrated personal narrative of his work shows the great contribution that people's coalitions can make to the struggle for equality and freedom. Thompson cut his teeth organizing one of the great industrial unions, the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America, and brought his organizing skills and commitment to coalition building to Orange, New Jersey. He built a strong organization and skillfully led fights for school desegregation, black political representation, and strong government in a city he initially thought of as a "dirty Jim Crow town going nowhere." Thompson came to love the City of Orange and its caring citizens, seeing in its struggles a microcosm of America. This story of people's power is meant for all who struggle for human rights, economic opportunity, decent housing, effective education, and a chance for children to have a better life.

Ernest Thompson (1906-1971) grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, on a farm that had been given to his family at the end of the Civil War. The family was very poor and oppressed by racist practices. Thompson was determined to get away and to obtain power. He migrated to Jersey City, where he became part of the union organizing movement that built the Congress of Industrial Unions (CIO). He became the first African American to hold a fulltime organizing position with his union, the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE). He eventually headed UE's innovative Fair Employment Practices program and fought for equal rights and pay for women and minority workers. Thompson also helped build the National Negro Labor Council, 1951-1956, and served as its director of organizing. In 1956, under the onslaught of the McCarthy era, UE was split in two, and Thompson lost his job. His wife, Margaret Thompson, brought the local school segregation to his attention. Ernie "Home" Thompson organized to desegregate the regional schools, building strong coalitions and political power for the black community that ultimately served all the people of Orange.

Описание: Although ancient civilizations in the Andes are rich in history--with expansive empires, skilled artisans, and vast temple centers--the history of the Andean foothills on the south coast of present-day Peru is only now being unveiled. Nasca, a prehispanic society that flourished there from AD 1 to 750, is best known for its polychrome pottery, its enigmatic geoglyphs (the 'Nasca Lines'), and its ceremonial center, Cahuachi, which was the seat of power in early Nasca. However, despite the fact that archaeologists have studied Nasca civilization for more than a century, until now they have not pieced together the daily lives of Nasca residents. With this book, Kevin Vaughn offers the first portrait of village life in this ancient Andean society. Vaughn is interested in how societies develop and change, in particular their subsistence and political economies, interactions between elites and commoners, and the ritual activities of everyday life. By focusing on one village, Marcaya, he not only illuminates the lives and relationships of its people but he also contributes to an understanding of the more general roles played by villages in the growth of increasingly complex societies in the Andes. By examining agency in local affairs, he is able for the first time to explore the nature of power in Nasca and how it may have changed over time. By studying village and household activities, Vaughn argues, we can begin to appreciate from the ground up such essential activities as production, consumption, and the ideologies revealed by rituals--and thereby gain fresh insights into ancient civilizations.

Описание:

Indian Village is widely considered a classic. Since its publication, over six decades ago, the book has received immense acclaim, attaining extraordinary success, especially as the first book on a single village in post--Second World War South Asia. Indeed, the work represents a key statement of the wider shift from tribe to village in Indian anthropology, part of the movement away from studies of isolated groups toward writings on con-temporary communities in the sociology of the subcontinent. Written in an accessible, intimate manner, Indian Village needs to be understood today as a flagship endeavour of the social sciences in a young, independent India--a study that continues to be generously cited, including as a model monograph, in the disciplines at large.
