Описание: In this path-breaking study about Israels position vis-a-vis the Mediterranean Arab states of the Middle East and Maghreb, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, as well as the France, Italy, and Spain, wide regional neighboring relationships are analyzed and defined by dominant factors such as "fluctuating relations", "confrontation and realpolitik", "radicalism versus moderation", and the "complexities of political, military, intelligence, economic, and cultural connections." A central motif is the challenge of "uneasy coexistence". The work is based on extensive archival and other primary source documentation, including newspapers and Internet sites in English, Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish, Greek, French, Italian, and Spanish. Some of the most vital source material is found in the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, the U.S. Department of State-Office of the Historian, the Central Intelligence Agency data released recently through the Freedom of Information Act, the American presidential libraries, especially of Richard M. Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan, the Israel State Archives, and the Central Zionist Archives. Selected documents invaluable for understanding the major problems affecting the Mediterranean region are published in an appendix. Much of the source material is hitherto untapped or has received scant attention from researchers. This book will emerge as the standard work on Israels coexistence in the Mediterranean basin during her first fifty years of nationhood, an indispensable source for scholars of Israeli history, political scientists specializing in regional conflicts and conflict resolution, inter-Arab affairs, and Israel alignment with its non-Arab and European Mediterranean neighbours.

Описание: This volume provides an introduction to the Eastern Mediterranean region and introduces the concept of the Eastern Mediterranean as a new regional subsystem. Due to recent events in contemporary international politics, the Eastern Mediterranean can be seen as a laboratory where the balance of power among Great Powers and regional states are being tested. Written by leading academics in their respective fields, this book addresses key developments in the area and argues that the Eastern Mediterranean should be viewed as a distinct region. Particular emphasis is given to the initiatives undertaken by Israel, Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey; the role played by the United States and Russia; and the issues of energy, migration, and Islamic terrorism. Bringing together relevant information and theoretical debates, this book will be of interest to graduate students and academics studying international relations and politics in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as policymakers and journalists who want to have a clearer understanding of developments in the region.
Описание: Although The Flare-Up Of Tensions In East Asia Over The Disputed Islands, Which Are Alternatively Called Diaoyu (China), Diaoyutai (Taiwan) And Senkaku (Japan), Seems To Be Ever More Frequent, It Has Not Always Been The Case. Lessons From The Disturbed Waters Traces The Origin Of The Issue Back To When It First Surfaced In The 1970S. The Book Explains The Positions Of The Claimants, China, Japan And Taiwan, And Explores The Reasons Why They Have Taken Such Positions Over The Past Few Decades. Unlike The Other Books Which Analyse The Disputes Predominantly From A Geopolitical Perspective, This Books Tries To Do So Mainly From The Perspectives Of International Law, Conflict Management, Negotiation Strategies, And History. Readers Will Get To See An Interesting Dynamism Played Out Among The Three Actors Which Are Directly Involved And The Influence Of Extra-Regional Stakeholders Such As The Us Over The Disputes. While The Disputes Are Still Evolving, The Author Hopes This Book Can Shed New Light On The Intricacies And Complexities Of The Disputes And Can Provide Some Threads For Further In-Depth Discussions.

Описание:
Why are some territorial partitions accepted as the appropriate borders of a nation's homeland, whereas in other places conflict continues despite or even because of division of territory? In Homelands, Nadav G. Shelef develops a theory of what homelands are that acknowledges both their importance in domestic and international politics and their change over time. These changes, he argues, driven by domestic political competition and help explain the variation in whether partitions resolve conflict. Homelands also provides systematic, comparable data about the homeland status of lost territory over time that allow it to bridge the persistent gap between constructivist theories of nationalism and positivist empirical analyses of international relations.

Описание: The documents focus on two different types of borders; those that coincided with the British Mandate for Palestine, and the lines that resulted from the war-won divisions of land following the 1949 cease-fire and the final location of the opposing armies. The armistice lines basically followed the course of mandate boundaries with Transjordan, Syria and Lebanon with small modifications. The operative border between Israel and Jordan on the West Bank was based exclusively on an armistice line that had no geographical or historical foundations; other complications arose because of the vagueness of the original definitions of the mandatory boundaries. The major events, in this period, which established Israel?s modern borders were the 1947 United Nations Partition Plan, the war that followed the creation of Israel in 1948 and the subsequent United Nations Armistice Agreements negotiated between Israel and each of its Arab neighbours: Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt.
