Описание: An illustrated account of the life and work of the pioneering photographerThe Photographic Legacy of Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864–1952) draws on original papers and photographs from the Library of Congress to document the extraordinary life and nearly seventy-year career of this pioneering photographer. Maria Elizabeth Ausherman illuminates the early origins of Johnston’s style and vision, and her attempts to change society through her art. One of the first women to work in an emerging field dominated by men, Johnston achieved acclaim as an accomplished photographer and photojournalist. As the official White House photographer for five administrations, she was instrumental in defining the medium and inspiring women to train in and appreciate photography. But it is her monumental nine-state survey of southern American architecture that stands as her most significant contribution to the history and development of photography both as art and as documentary. Through her photography, Johnston showed reverence for the beautiful historic buildings she appreciated and also helped shape architectural and photographic preservation in the United States.

Описание:

Serendipity placed David Johnston on Mount St. Helens when the volcano rumbled to life in March 1980. Throughout that ominous spring, Johnston was part of a team that conducted scientific research that underpinned warnings about the mountain. Those warnings saved thousands of lives when the most devastating volcanic eruption in U.S. history blew apart Mount St. Helens, but killed Johnston on the ridge that now bears his name. Melanie Holmes tells the story of Johnston's journey from a nature-loving Boy Scout to a committed geologist. Blending science with personal detail, Holmes follows Johnston through encounters with Aleutian volcanoes, his work helping the Portuguese government assess the geothermal power of the Azores, and his dream job as a volcanologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. Interviews and personal writings reveal what a friend called "the most unjaded person I ever met," an imperfect but kind, intelligent young scientist passionately in love with his life and work and determined to make a difference.

The delightful correspondence between Benjamin Franklin and his favorite sister, with an introduction and notes by Carl Van Doren. Franklin wrote more letters to Jane Mecom than he is known to have written to any other person, and as she emerges through these letters we understand the reasons for the esteem in which he held her. The letters cover a period of over sixty years, give new and intimate glimpses of Franklin and of the times, particularly in Philadelphia and Boston, and will enchant any reader of 18th century Americana.

Описание: The people whose images appear in this work provide an ethnic microcosm of what makes Wisconsin's settlement story so unique. As Native Americans, primarily the Potawatomi tribe, were forced out of the region, in came large numbers of Protestant farmers from New York State. A step and a half behind the New Yorkers arrived distinct colonies of families from Western Europe-Bavarians, W rtembergers, Irish, English, Swiss, Welsh, Scots, and other European states. Peer into the faces as well as the dress presented in these outstanding photographs and see the early ethnic flavor of Wisconsin jump out at you.

For decades the fruits of that labour, a collection of glass plate negatives, lay largely forgotten in the local opera house and theater. Now, an historic western town comes to life as it once was, through images of the town`s business district as found on those photographic plates.

Описание: This is the only photographic portrait book featuring over 600 Union generals. The Civil War was a tragic and bloody rebellion in American history claiming the lives of nearly 700,000 soldiers fighting for the Union and The Confederate States of America. It remains the bloodiest war fought on US soil. Many of the Union Generals in this book served for years in the United States Military and were commanders during the Mexican War and later served during America's Indian Wars. After the Civil War, some Generals served in the United States Senate, the United States Congress and other state offices. Several served as President of the United States. These men were true patriots in every sense of the word. At least 67 Union Generals died during the Civil War. Some died in combat; others died from their wounds and associated illness. All served and all sacrificed. All carried visible and internal wounds for life, and all bled in some fashion. Those are the dire perils of war and all who served, deserve respect and their place in history. Since a picture is worth a thousand word; each image in this book speaks limitless words of courage, duty, honor, and country. These brave Generals and their soldiers saved the Union.
