Описание: The half century of European activity in the Caribbean that followed Columbuss first voyages brought enormous demographic, economic, and social change to the region as Europeans, Indigenous people, and Africans whom Spaniards imported to provide skilled and unskilled labor came into extended contact for the first time. In Life and Society in the Early Spanish Caribbean, Ida Altman examines the interactions of these diverse groups and individuals and the transformation of the islands of the Greater Antilles (Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Jamaica). She addresses the impact of disease and ongoing conflict; the Spanish monarchys efforts to establish a functioning political system and an Iberian church; evangelization of Indians and Blacks; the islands economic development; the international character of the Caribbean, which attracted Portuguese, Italian, and German merchants and settlers; and the formation of a highly unequal and coercive but dynamic society. As Altman demonstrates, in the first half of the sixteenth century the Caribbean became the first full-fledged iteration of the Atlantic world in all its complexity.

Описание: The Music of the Netherlands Antilles: Why Eleven Antilleans Knelt before Chopin's Heart is not your usual musical scholarship. In October 1999, eleven Antilleans attended the service held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Fr?d?ric Chopin's death. This service, held in the Warsaw church where the composer's heart is kept in an urn, was an opportunity for these Antilleans to express their debt of gratitude to Chopin, whose influence is central to Antillean music history. Press coverage of this event caused Dutch novelist and author Jan Brokken to start writing this book, based on notes he took while living on Cura?ao from 1993 to 2002.Anyone hoping to discover an overlooked chapter of Caribbean music and music history will be amply rewarded with this Dutch-Caribbean perspective on the pan-Caribbean process of creolization. On Cura?ao, the history and legacy of slavery shaped culture and music, affecting all of the New World. Brokken's portraits of prominent Dutch Antillean composers are interspersed with cultural and music history. He puts the Dutch Caribbean's contributions into a broader context by also examining the nineteenth-century works by pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk from New Orleans and Manuel Saumell from Cuba. Brokken explores the African component of Dutch Antillean music-examining the history of the rhythm and music known as tamb? as well as American jazz pianist Chick Corea's fascination with the tumba rhythm from Cura?ao. The book ends with a discussion of how recent Dutch Caribbean adaptations of European dance forms have shifted from a classical approach to contemporary forms of Latin jazz.

Описание: The author of Time Longa' Dan Twine presents another intimate look at the history of the Virgin Islands, here pursuing the long past of the town of Christiansted and the stories of some of the people who lived and died there. The reader will be surprised to read that the town is older than the great majority of American cities and towns, that it has been occupied by no less than seven different nations, and that at one time it served as the capital of the Danish West Indies. Equally fascinating are the chapters on the broad variety of people who at one time or another called the town home-Dove Braffith, perhaps the greatest of the island's painters; Adrian Bentzon, a governor of many talents and curious adventures; Ralph de Chabert, a labor leader and outstanding journalist; Fritz Henle, a world-class photographer; Charles Blair and Maureen O'Hara and their Antilles Airboats airlines that connected the islands of the Virgin group; and Socha Svender, a sculptress of fascinating creations. In addition, this work includes accounts of the lives of Ward Canaday, American industrialist and Crucian farmer; Frederik "Africanus" Svane, a Danish-African who left his home on the Gold Coast to serve in the household of Ludvig von Holberg, Denmark's greatest writer; Wulff Joseph Wulff, a Dane who lived his life and founded a family on the African Gold Coast; and Juan Garrido, perhaps the first African to set foot on St. Croix who later rode at the side of Hern n Cortes as he conquered Mexico. Also there are stories of local Pirates, Maroons, Jumbies, Carib Indians, and Obeah, along with a sketch of Virgin Islands culture. Attention is given to the recent Palestinian immigrants to these islands and to the complex relationship among Anna Heegaard, Peter von Scholten, and Anna's present Danish descendents. Finally, the author revisits the controversial question of the Columbus landing at Salt River in 1493. This book opens the door for the curious newcomer to the Virgin Islands who desires to become acquainted with these endlessly fascinating islands, and at the same time, it provides new insights to those long familiar with the local culture and history.

Описание: Beset by the forces of European colonialism, US imperialism, and neoliberalism, the people of the Antilles have had good reasons to band together politically and economically, yet not all Dominicans, Haitians, and Puerto Ricans have heeded the calls for collective action. So what has determined whether Antillean solidarity movements fail or succeed? In this comprehensive new study, Ala? Reyes-Santos argues that the crucial factor has been the extent to which Dominicans, Haitians, and Puerto Ricans imagine each other as kin. Our Caribbean Kin considers three key moments in the region’s history: the nineteenth century, when the antillanismo movement sought to throw off the yoke of colonial occupation; the 1930s, at the height of the region’s struggles with US imperialism; and the past thirty years, as neoliberal economic and social policies have encroached upon the islands. At each moment, the book demonstrates, specific tropes of brotherhood, marriage, and lineage have been mobilized to construct political kinship among Antilleans, while racist and xenophobic discourses have made it difficult for them to imagine themselves as part of one big family.  Recognizing the wide array of contexts in which Antilleans learn to affirm or deny kinship, Reyes-Santos draws from a vast archive of media, including everything from canonical novels to political tracts, historical newspapers to online forums, sociological texts to local jokes. Along the way, she uncovers the conflicts, secrets, and internal hierarchies that characterize kin relations among Antilleans, but she also discovers how they have used notions of kinship to create cohesion across differences.

Описание:

In recent years, the historiography of nineteenth-century Spain and Latin America has been invigorated by interdisciplinary engagement with scholars working on topics such as empire, slavery, abolition, race, identity, and captivity. No scholar better exemplified these developments than Christopher Schmidt-Nowara, a specialist on Spain and its Caribbean colonies in Cuba and Puerto Rico. A brilliant career was cut short in 2015 when he died at the age of 48. Rethinking Atlantic Empire takes Schmidt-Nowara’s work as a point of departure, charting scholarly paths that move past reductive national narratives and embrace transnational approaches to the entangled empires of the Atlantic world.

Описание: This 1897 account of slavery in the French Caribbean emphasised its economic benefits to the islands, downplayed by early revisionist historians. It discusses the legislation (the Code Noir) that governed all aspects of slavery in the French colonies, as well as the living conditions, religion and morality of the slaves.
