Описание: The author of Time Longa' Dan Twine presents another intimate look at the history of the Virgin Islands, here pursuing the long past of the town of Christiansted and the stories of some of the people who lived and died there. The reader will be surprised to read that the town is older than the great majority of American cities and towns, that it has been occupied by no less than seven different nations, and that at one time it served as the capital of the Danish West Indies. Equally fascinating are the chapters on the broad variety of people who at one time or another called the town home-Dove Braffith, perhaps the greatest of the island's painters; Adrian Bentzon, a governor of many talents and curious adventures; Ralph de Chabert, a labor leader and outstanding journalist; Fritz Henle, a world-class photographer; Charles Blair and Maureen O'Hara and their Antilles Airboats airlines that connected the islands of the Virgin group; and Socha Svender, a sculptress of fascinating creations. In addition, this work includes accounts of the lives of Ward Canaday, American industrialist and Crucian farmer; Frederik "Africanus" Svane, a Danish-African who left his home on the Gold Coast to serve in the household of Ludvig von Holberg, Denmark's greatest writer; Wulff Joseph Wulff, a Dane who lived his life and founded a family on the African Gold Coast; and Juan Garrido, perhaps the first African to set foot on St. Croix who later rode at the side of Hern n Cortes as he conquered Mexico. Also there are stories of local Pirates, Maroons, Jumbies, Carib Indians, and Obeah, along with a sketch of Virgin Islands culture. Attention is given to the recent Palestinian immigrants to these islands and to the complex relationship among Anna Heegaard, Peter von Scholten, and Anna's present Danish descendents. Finally, the author revisits the controversial question of the Columbus landing at Salt River in 1493. This book opens the door for the curious newcomer to the Virgin Islands who desires to become acquainted with these endlessly fascinating islands, and at the same time, it provides new insights to those long familiar with the local culture and history.

Описание: Rare views of the beginnings of a historic space programAfter the excitement of the first Moon landing, the U.S. space program took an ambitious new direction closer to home: NASA's Space Shuttle program promised frequent access to Earth orbit for medical and scientific breakthroughs; deploying, repairing and maintaining satellites; and assembling a space station. Picturing the Space Shuttle is the first photographic history of the program's early years as the world's first space plane debuted.Showcasing over 450 unpublished and lesser-known images, this book traces the growth of the Space Shuttle from 1965 to 1982, from initial concept through its first four space flights. The photographs offer windows into designing the first reusable space vehicle as well as the construction and testing of the prototype shuttle Enterprise. They also show the factory assembly and delivery of the Space Shuttle Columbia, preparations at the major NASA field centers, and astronaut selection and training. Finally, the book devotes a chapter to each of the first four orbital missions, STS-1 through STS-4, providing an abundance of seldom seen photos for each flight.Mostly selected from J. L. Pickering's personal archive, the world's largest private collection of U.S. human space flight images, the high-quality photographs in this book are paired with veteran journalist John Bisney's detailed descriptions and historical background information. The book also includes images of NASA and Shuttle contractor booklets, manuals, access badges, and press kits, as well as a foreword by Robert Crippen, the pilot of the first Space Shuttle flight. Picturing the Space Shuttle recreates the excitement of an era in which the possibilities of space exploration seemed limitless.
Описание: In the late nineteenth century, the United States was known internationally as a place full of gaudiness and glitter. While scholars have long assumed that this visual excess was literal, linked to the United States-utilization of sophisticated modern light and consumer technologies, Fashion Nation argues that far from being linked to technology or consumerism, the reputation of the United States as a place of glittery bodies and landscapes was rooted in early nineteenth-century British and European ethnic nationalism, and the fashion of wearing colorful ethnic costuming that was adopted as part of these movements.
In this work, Sandra Tomc traces the history of the idea of America as a gauche, flashy place from its early proliferation in the 1820s and 1830s, when American flashiness was associated primarily with colorful clothes, to its fruition in late nineteenth-century mass entertainment when the notion of American visual audacity shifted from clothes to elaborate lights and technological displays. Tomc argues that in the wake of pressure in the first half of the nineteenth century to embrace racially and ethnically saturated national types, significant branches of U.S. nationalist culture developed national types distinguished by their refusal to divulge racial and ethnic affiliation. To make its case, Fashion Nation reads literature alongside an extraordinary, colorful, and largely forgotten archive of international costume books, theatrical spectacles, travelogues, and world's fair extravaganzas to show how America was textually and visually constructed for transatlantic audiences.

Описание: Picturing Harrisonburg provides the most vibrant examination available of the history of the Virginia city, once a frontier town founded in the 1730s but now a burgeoning city centrally located in one of America’s most beloved, historic, and beautiful regions—the Shenandoah Valley. Taking advantage of the rich visual record of Harrisonburg, the book serves as a model for how pictures of every kind reveal and represent a community’s evolving ideals and aspirations that change over time.Editor David Ehrenpries and a cast of contributors that includes historians and other experts on the region have organized six illuminating essays around 258 illustrations, many in full color, to discuss Harrisonburg’s changing built environment, its iconic ""places of memory,"" and how ideal visions of the place were often at odds with the lived reality. Their captivating essays and visual presentations begin in 1828 and include town maps and plans, a pivotal 1867 panoramic oil painting of Harrisonburg, early twentieth-century postcards, mid-twentieth century documentary and commercial photographs, images of ""urban renewal,"" and the graphic designs, logos, and digital photographs pertaining to the twenty-first-century city. The innovative approach of Picturing Harrisonburg offers a new model for understanding the past and present of the places we inhabit.

Описание: In nearly every South Dakota community, historic houses, government buildings, or commercial blocks stand as icons of our past. Picturing the Past captures the memories and personal history within South Dakota’s historic buildings in seventy-eight dramatic black-and-white photographs. Jay D. Vogt and Stephen C. Rogers provide context and relevance to the buildings and places depicted in Scott Myers’s vivid images.
These sites are the physical remnants of South Dakota’s history—the tangible evidence of life on the Great Plains. In a new afterword, Vogt looks at what has happened since the book was first published nearly fifteen years ago.
Buying into the Regime is a transnational history of how Chilean grapes created new forms of consumption and labor politics in both the United States and Chile. After seizing power in 1973, Augusto Pinochet embraced neoliberalism, transforming Chile’s economy. The country became the world's leading grape exporter. Heidi Tinsman traces the rise of Chile's fruit industry, examining how income from grape production enabled fruit workers, many of whom were women, to buy the commodities—appliances, clothing, cosmetics—flowing into Chile, and how this new consumerism influenced gender relations, as well as pro-democracy movements. Back in the United States, Chilean and U.S. businessmen aggressively marketed grapes as a wholesome snack. At the same time, the United Farm Workers and Chilean solidarity activists led parallel boycotts highlighting the use of pesticides and exploitation of labor in grape production. By the early-twenty-first century, Americans may have been better informed, but they were eating more grapes than ever.
