Описание:

Winner Best Edited Book Award presented by the Society for Research on Adolescence
Immigration to the United States has reached historic numbers— 25 percent of children under the age of 18 have an immigrant parent, and this number is projected to grow to one in three by 2050. These children have become a significant part of our national tapestry, and how they fare is deeply intertwined with the future of our nation. Immigrant children and the children of immigrants face unique developmental challenges. Navigating two distinct cultures at once, immigrant-origin children have no expert guides to lead them through the process. Instead, they find themselves acting as guides for their parents.

How are immigrant children like all other children, and how are they unique? What challenges as well as what opportunities do their circumstances present for their development? What characteristics are they likely to share because they have immigrant parents, and what characteristics are unique to specific groups of origin? How are children of first-generation immigrants different from those of second-generation immigrants? Transitions offers comprehensive coverage of the field’s best scholarship on the development of immigrant children, providing an overview of what the field needs to know—or at least systematically begin to ask—about the immigrant child and adolescent from a developmental perspective.

This book takes an interdisciplinary perspective to consider how personal, social, and structural factors interact to determine a variety of trajectories of development. The editors have curated contributions from experts across a carefully selected variety of topics covering ecologies, processes, and outcomes of development pertinent to immigrant origin children.

Описание: This book teaches the impact of the sociopolitical climate on racial minority immigrants, as well as highlights theory, research, and practice concerning the various types of trauma and oppression faced. For racial minority immigrants in the United States, trauma can have both historical and ongoing sources. Today amp rsquo s immigrants face a dangerous mix of rising nationalism and xenophobia, alarming rates of displacement within and across nations, war, trafficking, terrorism, and deportation. Multiple traumas stem from these experiences and can be exacerbated by interpersonal violence and other forms of marginalization within communities. This book examines the lasting impact of trauma for racial minority immigrants and subsequent generations.   Each chapter explores both the stress and resilience of immigrant groups in the United States, as well as clinical or community-based efforts to address the multiple traumas that affect immigrants and their children. While considering the socioecological contexts of immigrants, the chapters reflect a diversity of theoretical perspectives needed to expand existing treatments for trauma, such as multicultural, feminist, womanist, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and humanistic theories.   In the nuanced pages of this book, you will deepen your understanding of the immigrant experience and develop professional skills to help heal traumatic stress faced by racial minority immigrants.

Overcoming Age Discrimination in Employment: An Essential Guide for Workers, Advocates & Employers

Описание: The past 50 years have seen a revolution in the United States. Computers, robotics... the spectacular rise of the Internet. But one thing has not changed appreciably - the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA). The ADEA was weak and riddled with loopholes when it was adopted by the U.S. Congress a half century ago, and it has been further eroded by the U.S. Supreme Court. The law today provides far less protection from age discrimination than discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, color and national origin. This lack of equal protection, combined with the difficult economy, has led to epidemic age discrimination in employment, especially in hiring. The problem is so pervasive that it is trickling down to workers in their 30s. OVERCOMING AGE DISCRIMINATION IN EMPLOYMENT is a critical, timely and muchneeded resource for workers, advocates and employers. This book provides an easy-to-understand overview of age discrimination law and uses real cases from the federal courts and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to demonstrate how problems are analyzed and decided. Age discrimination can have severe consequences for both workers and employers. Workers who ignore age discrimination risk termination, chronic unemployment, years of low-wage or temp work, forced early retirement and, ultimately, an impoverished old age. Employers who engage in or ignore age discrimination risk costly litigation, damage to reputation and needless turnover at a time of increasing competition for skilled workers. OVERCOMING AGE DISCRIMINATION IN EMPLOYMENT answers such questions as: - When do ageist remarks rise to the level of illegal harassment? - Who qualifies for the protection of the ADEA? - What factors influence whether the EEOC will dismiss a charge without further investigation as having no reasonable cause? - Can an employer escape liability by replacing an older worker with an even older worker? - What recourse do workers have if they miss EEOC filing deadlines? - Why are employers invariably the big winners in the EEOC's mediation and conciliation programs? - Can an employer fire a group of older workers for picketing outside the company to protest age discrimination? - When does an employment relationship exist? - Why doesn't the ADEA permit the award of punitive damages or damages for emotional distress? - An employer policy that adversely impacts older workers is legal if it is based on a reasonable factor other than age. What is reasonable? - What is an early retirement incentive and when can it be offered? - Are unemployment compensation and welfare benefits deducted from an award of back pay? PATRICIA G. BARNES is a licensed attorney, a former judge and the editor of the employment law blog, Age Discrimination in Employment.com. She wrote the groundbreaking book, BETRAYED: THE LEGALIZATION OF AGE DISCRIMINATION IN THE WORKPLACE (2014), which examines the second-class legal status of older workers. Ms. Barnes also wrote the best-selling legal guide to workplace bullying, SURVIVING BULLIES, QUEEN BEES & PSYCHOPATHS IN THE WORKPLACE (2012) and ZEN AND THE DIFFICULT WORKPLACE (2013).

Описание: Despite a plethora of initiatives, policies, and procedures to increase their representation in STEM, women of color still remain largely underrepresented. In the face of institutional and societal bias, it is important to understand the various methods women of color use to navigate the STEM landscape as well as the role of their personal and professional identities in overcoming the systemic (intentional or unintentional) barriers placed before them.

Overcoming Barriers for Women of Color in STEM Fields: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a collection of innovative research depicting the challenges of women of color professionals in STEM and identifying strategies used to overcome these barriers. The book examines the narrative of these difficulties through a reflective lens that also showcases how both the professional and personal lives of these women were changed in the process. Additionally, the text connects the process to the Butterfly Effect, a metamorphosis that brings about a dramatic change in character and perspective to those who go through it, which in the case of women of color is about rebirth, evolution, and renewal. While highlighting topics including critical race theory, institutional racism, and educational inequality, this book is ideally designed for administrators, researchers, students, and professionals working in the STEM fields.

Описание:

International migration is one of the prominent facts in the contemporary world, which affects the political, socio-economic and cultural processes both in origin and destination countries. Historically, Western Europe has been one of the most attractive destinations for migrants because of the level of socio-economic development and political stability. However, there are many complex institutional, socio-economic and cultural issues to be addressed to achieve the integration of migrants and to eliminate social inequalities between the native populations and migrants in these host countries.

In this respect, this book examines some aspects of socio-economic disparities between native populations and the migrants in Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Different migration histories, labour market features and welfare state characteristics of these countries are expected to provide insight about how the integration-related and inequality-related issues emerge in diverse social and institutional settings. The study covers the empirical analyses of the disparities in the labour market and accessing the social benefits between 2004 and 2016 by using comparable cross- country survey data. These analyses attempt to demonstrate the relationships between these two domains. The study has a comparative approach, which aims at providing comparable evidence both across the countries and over time in each of the selected countries.
