Описание: Two unsung women whose power using food as a political weapon during the civil rights movement was so great it brought the ire of government agents working against them

In early 1969 Cleo Silvers and a few Black Panther Party members met at a community center laden with boxes of donated food to cook for the neighborhood children. By the end of the year, the Black Panthers would be feeding more children daily in all of their breakfast programs than the state of California was at that time.

More than a thousand miles away, Aylene Quin had spent the decade using her restaurant in McComb, Mississippi, to host secret planning meetings of civil rights leaders and organizations, feed the hungry, and cement herself as a community leader who could bring people together--physically and philosophically--over a meal.

These two women's tales, separated by a handful of years, tell the same story: how food was used by women as a potent and necessary ideological tool in both the rural south and urban north to create lasting social and political change. The leadership of these women cooking and serving food in a safe space for their communities was so powerful, the FBI resorted to coordinated extensive and often illegal means to stop the efforts of these two women, and those using similar tactics, under COINTELPRO--turning a blind eye to the firebombing of the children of a restaurant owner, destroying food intended for poor kids, and declaring a community breakfast program a major threat to public safety.

But of course, it was never just about the food.

Описание:

How do you live the feminist dream? Kate Bryan summons a small army of her heroes to answer that question-- Mary Agnes Cullen (her mother, "the original feminist"), Rosa Parks, Joan of Arc, Rachael Denhollander, Catherine of Siena, Shania Twain, John Paul II, Malala Yousafzai, Mary of Nazareth. But to sum it all up she turns to another of her feminist heroes, Dolly Parton--"Find out who you are and do it on purpose."

For Bryan this is genuine feminism--Find out who you are, who you were created to be. And every day, live that out. You have a purpose. God wants you to leave a unique mark on the people in your life, on this world. Find out who you were meant to be and live that out. Doing that will give others the passion, zeal, and courage to find out who they have been created to be and embrace the life that they were created for. By living our authentic lives we will change the world.

This is the first book of the Magenta series, edited by Charles Camosy. The Magenta project brings together authors who will treat important topics from the standpoint of Christian conviction without being trapped in a polarized mindset. In this volume, Kate Bryan looks at feminism from a Christian perspective, demonstrating through personal stories and a keen eye for contemporary life that Christianity has a profound message for women today.

Описание: For much of the 20th century, books for children encouraged girls to be weak, submissive, and fearful. This book discusses such traits, both blatantly and subtly reinforced, in many of the most popular works of the period. Quoting a wide variety of passages, O’Keefe illustrates the typical behaviour of fictional girls – many of whom were passive and immobile while others were actually invalids. They all engaged in approved girlish activities: deferred to elders, observed the priorities, and, in the end, accepted conventional suitors. Even feisty tomboys, like Jo in Little Women, eventually gave up on their dreams and their independence. The discussion is interlaced with moments from the author’s own childhood that suggest how her developing self-interacted with these stories. She and her contemporaries, trying to reconcile their conservative reading with the changing world around them, learned ambivalence rather than confidence. Good Girl Messages also includes a discussion of books read by boys, who were depicted as purposeful, daring, and dominating.

Описание:

Exploring the quest for ‘self’ in the city through migrant women’s narratives

This ethnographical study explores the process of migration and its economic, social and psychological dimensions, throwing light on the connection between middle-class women migrants and city spaces. The study is based on a survey, discussions and interviews, and highlights the emergence of a gendered citizen in an unknown and then gradually made-known or ‘selfed’ city.

Through their narratives, these women share their experiences of the emergence of the embodied ‘self’ while negotiating a modern urban space. This includes challenging existing notions of empowerment, intimacy and security, suggesting how what women need brings forth changes in themselves and in the process shapes the future of cities.
