Описание:
Language in all its modes—oral, written, print, electronic—claims the central role in Walter J. Ong’s acclaimed speculations on human culture. After his death, his archives were found to contain unpublished drafts of a final book manuscript that Ong envisioned as a distillation of his life’s work. This first publication of Language as Hermeneutic, reconstructed from Ong’s various drafts by Thomas D. Zlatic and Sara van den Berg, is more than a summation of his thinking. It develops new arguments around issues of cognition, interpretation, and language. Digitization, he writes, is inherent in all forms of "writing," from its early beginnings in clay tablets. As digitization increases in print and now electronic culture, there is a corresponding need to counter the fractioning of digitization with the unitive attempts of hermeneutics, particularly hermeneutics that are modeled on oral rather than written paradigms.
In addition to the edited text of Language as Hermeneutic, this volume includes essays on the reconstruction of Ong’s work and its significance within Ong’s intellectual project, as well as a previously unpublished article by Ong, "Time, Digitization, and Dal?'s Memory," which further explores language’s role in preserving and enhancing our humanity in the digital age.

Описание: Sarah Derbew brings into brilliant new focus varied portrayals of blackness in ancient Greek literature and art, while critiquing modern classical misappropriations which retroactively project contemporary theories of race and skin color onto archaic settings. This is a compelling contribution to better understanding of representations of blackness in antiquity.
The successful transmediation of books and documents through digitization requires the synergetic partnership of many professional figures, that have what may sometimes appear as contrasting goals at heart. On one side, there are those who look after the physical objects and strive to preserve them for future generations, and on the other those involved in the digitization of the objects, the information that they contain, and the management of the digital data. These complementary activities are generally considered as separate and when the current literature addresses both fields, it does so strictly within technical reports and guidelines, concentrating on procedures and optimal workflow, standards, and technical metadata. In particular, more often than not, conservation is presented as ancillary to digitization, with the role of the conservator restricted to the preparation of items for scanning, with no input into the digital product, leading to misunderstanding and clashes of interests.Surveying a variety of projects and approaches to the challenging conservation-digitization balance and fostering a dialogue amongst practitioners, this book aims at demonstrating that a dialogue between apparently contrasting fields not only is possible, but it is in fact desirable and fruitful. Only through the synergetic collaboration of all people involved in the digitization process, conservators included, can cultural digital objects that represent more fully the original objects and their materiality be generated, encouraging and enabling new research and widening the horizons of scholarship.
"It is a brilliant piece of work. A must-read for those of us in global corporations, or companies of any size really, that seek to act NOW." --Julia Martensen, Head of HR Strategy and Innovation at DB Schenker.
"Victor Assad uncovers longstanding empirical research from I/O psychologists on how to best match job candidates to jobs and the best of today's digital technology. He sees a world (that is emerging today) in which AI ontologies (which are identifying information and relationships about today's global and diverse workforces) will make significant improvements for matching candidates to jobs while reducing recruiting cycle times, costs and selection biases. Victor points out that HR now has the digital tools it needs to dramatically transform recruiting and the role of the recruiter. HR can now build strategic talent pools, improve the employee experience, and digitally collect insightful analytics that will open up a new era of understanding on what truly drives employee performance and innovation." --Angela Hood, Founder and CEO of ThisWay Global.
"Must read book if you are a recruiter or talent acquisition head. It goes over best practices and hacks each step of recruiting." --Sandeep Purwar, Founder/CEO, Bevov
Digital Technology and the Contemporary University examines the often messy realities of higher education in the 'digital age'. Drawing on a variety of theoretical and empirical perspectives, the book explores the intimate links between digital technology and wider shifts within contemporary higher education - not least the continued rise of the managerialist 'bureaucratic' university. It highlights the ways that these new trends can be challenged, and possibly changed altogether.
Addressing a persistent gap in higher education and educational technology research, where digital technology is rarely subject to an appropriately critical approach, Degrees of Digitization offers an alternative reading of the social, political, economic and cultural issues surrounding universities and technology. The book highlights emerging themes that are beginning to be recognised and discussed in academia, but as yet have not been explored thoroughly. Over the course of eight wide-ranging chapters the book addresses issues such as:
The role of digital technology in university reform;
Digital technologies and the organisation of universities;
Digital technology and the working lives of university staff;
Digital technology and the 'student experience';
Reimagining the place of digital technology within the contemporary university.
This book will be of great interest to all students, academic researchers and writers working in the areas of education studies and/or educational technology, as well as being essential reading for anyone working in the areas of higher education research and digital media research.
Описание: Nothing defined the 20th century more than the evolution of the car industry. The 2020 decade will see the automotive industry leap forward beyond simply moving people geographically toward a new purpose: to become a services industry. This book takes readers on a journey where cars will evolve towards becoming "computers on wheels." The automotive industry is one of the sectors most profoundly changed by digitalization and the 21st century energy needs. You'll explore the shifting paradigms and how cars today represent a new interpretation of what driving should be and what cars should offer. This book presents exciting case studies on how artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics are used to design future cars, predict car efficiency, ensure safety and simulate engineering dynamics for its design, as well as a new arena for IoT and human data. It opens a window into the origins of cars becoming software-run machines, first to run internal diagnostics, and then to become machines connected to other external machines via Bluetooth, to finally the Internet via 5G. From transportation to solving people's problems, The Future of the Automotive Industry is less about the technology itself, but more about the outcomes of technology in the future, and the transformative power it has over a much beloved item: cars. What You'll Learn
Explore smart cities and their evolution when it comes to traffic and vehicles
Gain a new perspective on the future of cars and transportation based on how digital technologies will transform vehicles
Examine how AI and IoT will create new contexts of interactions with drivers and passengers alike
Review concepts such as personalizing the driving experience and how this will take form
See how self-driving cars impact data mining of personal data
Who This Book Is For Anyone with an interest in digital advancements in the automotive industry beyond the connected car.
