Описание: Alarmist stories about Australia's relationship with China, and concerns about whether China is plotting to take control, insidiously or overtly, are regular front-page news. In Australia's China Odyssey, acclaimed historian James Curran explores this crucial and complicated relationship through the prism of the prime ministers who have handled relations with Beijing since Whitlam in 1972.Much recent analysis assumes that managing China has been difficult only since 2017. Yet this relationship has always been difficult. And while there have been moments of euphoria and uplift – moments, even, when some believed Australia could have a 'special relationship' with China – high anxiety and fear have often trailed closely in that slipstream. This book provides historical ballast to a debate so often mired in the parochialism of the present. The task of adjusting to China's rise is the greatest challenge Australian diplomacy has faced since Japan's revisionist attempts to remake East Asia in the 1930s. Ultimately, while China under Xi Jinping has indeed changed, and while there is justifiable alarm concerning the course of Beijing's aggressive and authoritarian nationalism, Australia's China Odyssey asks whether we have the courage to look in the mirror and see what this debate also reveals about Australia.

The first comprehensive and authoritative history of the medical legacies of the Vietnam War. This pioneering work from an esteemed historian sets the record straight on the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Foreword by Vietnam veteran and former Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove.

Описание: The French have long been part of the Australian story. From talented gold fields photographer Antoine Fauchery and infighting in the upper echelons of Melbourne society as to who should run Alliance Française to the Playoust family whose Australian-born sons enlisted with the French army in the First World War. French Connection paints an intricate portrait of the complex connections between the two nations. Alexis Bergantz provides a fascinating insight into how the idea of France influenced a new colony anxious to prove itself. Eager to demarcate themselves from Britain, many Australians saw France as a more cosmopolitan – and decadent – alternative to a stodgy Victorian world order.
Ironically, many of the French in Australia were not exactly the crème de la crème and they too navigated a world of lofty dreams and ideas that were often a far cry from reality. But what exactly did Australian colonists see when they looked to France? How much did the French presence in the Pacific loom over such ideas? And what did the French in Australia themselves make of it all?

Описание: A major new account of the 1940s in Australia. In this landmark book, Stuart Macintyre explains how a country traumatised by World War I, hammered by the Depression and overstretched by World War II became a prosperous, successful and growing society by the 1950s. An extraordinary group of individuals, notably John Curtin, Ben Chifley, Nugget Coombs, John Dedman and Robert Menzies, re-made the country, planning its reconstruction against a background of wartime sacrifice and austerity. The other part of this triumphant story shows Australia on the world stage, seeking to fashion a new world order that would bring peace and prosperity. This book shows the 1940s to be a pivotal decade in Australia. At the height of his powers, Macintyre reminds us that key components of the society we take for granted – work, welfare, health, education, immigration, housing – are not the result of military endeavour but policy, planning, politics and popular resolve.
Описание: Partway through the Jerilderie Letter, Ned Kelly accused Senior Constable Anthony Strahan of threatening him: he would shoot me ... like a dog. Those few fateful words have echoed through Australian history and been the cause of much bloodshed and violence. They ushered in a national myth: the legend of the Kelly Gang. In the two days after Anthony reputedly made his threat, Ned and his gang shot dead three police in an event now known as the Stringybark Creek killings. Neds reason for opening fire? He thought one cop was Anthony. Lachlan Strahan, Anthonys great-great-grandson, grew up believing Ned Kelly was a heroic outlaw and Anthony the ruthless cop who pursued him. Yet as Lachlan began to explore his ancestors life, he discovered an alternative story. Drawing on letters, police reports and newspapers, Lachlan pieces together the life of Anthony Strahan - a tempestuous Irish immigrant who embodied the thin blue line in the bush for 35 years. Bent on justice, he hunted some of the periods most infamous bushrangers, petty criminals and cattle-stealers. Yet his years-long pursuit of Ned Kelly was never publicly acknowledged, and after his death, the Kelly legend grew to distort his legacy. Did Anthony utter those incendiary words about Ned? Whose version of history do we believe? This is a tale about justice and retribution, morality and vengeance. It is about making a life against the odds in a wild frontier society. It is also a story of inheritance: of the words passed from father to son, and the myths we choose to preserve.

Описание:
Les Knight, a young man from Camberwell, Victoria was like many who joined to serve his country during the Second World War. But unlike many others his skill as a Lancaster pilot enabled him to successfully breach the Eder Dam in the now infamous Dambusters Raid. At the age of 22 Les was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and became a national hero.
But his war service continued and four months after the Dambusters Raid his aircraft was badly damaged. On this occasion Les' skill and bravery were again on display as he held the stricken plane steady to allow his seven crewmates to be able to bale out.
Then, as he searched for a place to ditch the aircraft, he steered clear of a Dutch village in order to avoid any civilian injuries. The aircraft hit the ground hard, cartwheeled and Les was killed.
Five of the seven crew members were able to evade being captured by the Germans and with the help of underground movements were returned to England. The other two were captured and detained in POW camps until war's end. All seven returned home to continue their lives, marry and have children. Their lives are Les' legacy.
This is the remarkable story of one brave Australian who answered his country's calling and who demonstrated courage far beyond expectation. His gravestone carries the inscription 'Let us be Worthy'. The village of Den Ham have never forgotten the bravery of this young Australian pilot. His grave has always been immaculately kept.

Aboriginal Screen-Printed Textiles from Australia’s Top End presents the work of contemporary Australian textile artists working at five Aboriginal-owned art centers in the Northern Territory: Tiwi Design, Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association, Injalak Arts and Crafts Aboriginal Corporation, B?bbarra Women’s Centre, and Merrepen Arts, Culture and Language. This book traces the history of textile screen printing at these art centers, from its beginnings in the late 1960s to its recent emergence as a vibrant contemporary art form for Aboriginal expression. A profile of each art center is followed by representative artworks. Essays by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal scholars, curators, and practitioners discuss the history, inspiration, and practical processes underlying these striking creations; the ways screen-printed textile designs express the artists’ cultures, identities, and connections to lands; and the art centers’ collaborations with fashion and interior designers.
