Описание:
As far as Irish history is concerned, consuming Irish children was not only a matter for Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal. Late nineteenth-century Ireland saw the emergence of a thriving home-grown advertising industry, and the Irish child played a pivotal role in developing a nascent consumer state from the 1860s until 1921. Through extensive analysis of advertising copy, historical materials, ephemera and literature, this study links the child-centred consumer culture of Victorian Ireland with its impact on the establishment of the independent state. This form of «Celtic consumerism» was also evident in Scotland following the Gaelic Revival, positioning the child as the newest participant in a national process of consumption. Due to high child literacy rates, which outstripped those of mainland Britain, Ireland’s children were appealed to as literate consumers in advertising copy and were informed of the perils or benefits of consumer culture in late Victorian Irish literature. This book presents a fascinating picture of the role of the child in the Irish marketplace at the fin de si?cle, as well as investigating simultaneous developments in the Irish education system and laws concerning the care and welfare of children.
Описание: This book explores the connections that Jose Joaquin de Mora (1783–1864) established with Britain, where he was exiled from 1823 to 1826 and was to return as diplomat in the following decades. His admiration for the British materialised in a series of cultural transfers aimed at the promotion and diffusion of British culture in Spain and Spanish America. He contributed to the popularization of Bentham’s utilitarianism, the principles of British classical economy, and the philosophy of the Scottish School of Common Sense; he translated texts by Scott and Shakespeare and wrote an unfinished version of Byron’s Don Juan; and, above all, he presented Britain as a model for the political, economic, and literary regeneration of the Hispanic world.

Описание: This book retrieves a neglected episode in Left cultural histories, placing Irish writers in the company of a broader international group of poets, writers and journalists, who were part of a Popular Front cultural movement in the Thirties, opposed to fascism and witness to the Spanish Civil War.

Описание: Radical domestic politics, musical experimentation, advancing technology and the influence of migration from Europe and Britain’s enrichment from it, all had their affects on a remarkable year in musical cultural life in the mid-30s. This book looks at the little-known aspect of music and politics in domestic Britain in 1934, a pivotal year in terms of political and cultural developments.Music and Politics in Thirties Britain focuses on the production, reception and interpretation of classical music in relation to the changes of the 1930s. John Morris treads new ground by examining the relationship between music, musicians and fascism – an area overlooked by existing scholarship. The book expertly traces the complexities and contradictions of British music history in the 1930s as musicians like others in the Arts attempted to engage with the political turmoil of the period. John Morris exemplifies the “cultural turn” in studies of British fascism, and also shows the overlap between ideas of the BUF and more progressive musicians. The result is a stimulating addition to existing scholarship which will be of interest to scholars and students alike.

Описание: Why has the unification of Cyprus proved impossible? The existing literature looks to the 1950s, and the formation of EOKA under George Grivas. Here, Alexis Rappas challenges that view, showing that the key to the conflict between the British Empire and Greek Cypriots lies in the history of the 1930s.

Описание: One of the most important Irish novelists of the twentieth century, Kate O’Brien (1897–1974) was also a pioneer of women’s writing. In a career that spanned almost fifty years, nine novels, nine plays, two travelogues, and copious criticism, O’Brien rebelled against the narrow nationalism andrestrictive Catholicism prevalent in independent Ireland. In this highly original approach to O’Brien’s work, Davison traces the influence of three leading Spanish writers—Jacinto Benavente, Miguel deCervantes, and Teresa of Avila. O’Brien’s lifelong fascination with Spanish literature and culture offered an oblique way of resisting the Catholic and conservative imperatives of the Irish Free State. In a series of close comparative readings, Davison identifies the origin of O’Brien’s creative disinhibition and ultimately situates her within a tradition of dissident Irish women writers.

In this book Dan O`Brien investigates these shared concerns of the two authors.

Описание: The words of its writers are part of the texture of Dublin, an invisible counterpart to the bricks and pavement we see around us. Beyond the ever-present footsteps of James Joyce's characters, Leopold Bloom or Stephen Dedalus, around the city centre, an ordinary-looking residential street overlooking Dublin Bay, for instance, presents the house where Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney lived for many years; a few blocks away is the house where another Nobel Laureate, W. B. Yeats, was born. Just down the coast is the pier linked to yet another, Samuel Beckett, from which we can see the Martello Tower that is the setting for the opening chapter of Ulysses. But these are only a few. Step-by-step, Dublin: A Writer's City unfolds a book-lover's map of this unique city, inviting us to experience what it means to live in a great city of literature. The book is heavily illustrated, and features custom maps.
