A unique study of an Andean community’s water rituals and the extraordinary document describing how they should be performed
In the dry season in the Andes, water from springs, lakes, reservoirs, and melting glaciers feeds irrigation canals that have sustained communities for thousands of years. Managing and maintaining these water infrastructures is essential, and in 1921, in the village of San Pedro de Casta, Peru, local authorities recorded their ritual canal-cleaning duties in a Spanish-language document called the Entablo. It is only the second book (along with the Huarochirí Manuscript) ever seen by scholars in which an Andean community explains its customs and ritual laws in its own words.
Sarah Bennison offers a critical introduction to the Entablo, a Spanish transcription of the document, and an English translation. Among its other revelations, the Entablo delves into the use of khipu boards, devices that meld the traditional knotted strings known as khipus with a written alphabet. Only in the Entablo do we learn that there were multiple khipu boards associated with a single canal-cleaning ritual, or that there were separate khipu records for men and women. The Entablo manuscript furnishes unparalleled insights into Andean rituals, religion, and community history at a historical moment when rural highland communities were changing rapidly.

Описание: Who were the great ghost story writers? Why did so many leading literary figures attempt the genre with varying degrees of success? Who were the female ghost story writers, many now unjustly neglected, who made such a huge contribution to the genre?Between 1820 and 1950, a period known today as the golden age of British ghost fiction, the traditional ghostly tale was adopted as a mainstream literary form by many of the foremost writers of the era, reaching a level of mastery that many believe remains unmatched to this day. That a number of leading literary figures took the genre seriously and were keen to grapple with and master the form is testament to the challenges it posed and how fiendishly difficult it is to write successful ghost fiction. Newcomers to the genre may be pleasantly surprised by the skill, subtlety and psychological insight displayed by the master ghost story writers. The finest examples transcend the genre and take their place among the best of our classic literature.Female authors made a vital contribution to the genre and many are included in this volume. Here, for example, you will find E. Nesbit, famous today as the author of the perennially popular novel, The Railway Children; the mysterious Lettice Galbraith about whom little is known, but whose ghost story fiction is regarded by some as among the best ever written; Dorothy Macardle, a prominent figure in Irish literary society who wrote her first ghost stories while in prison in 1922 for nationalist activities; and the wonderfully named Wilhelmina Fitzclarence, Countess of Munster, who published her first book when she was nearly sixty. This volume explores the contribution made by leading and lesser-known authors to the ghost story genre. It features biographical information about all the authors covered as well as additional fascinating material including the ghost story master M. R. James' essay about ghost story fiction; an entry on the mysterious 'B'; a list of recommended short stories; and a brief overview of research into supernatural phenomena and some of the more famous first-hand accounts of ghostly encounters.Neil Wilson, author of the definitive British ghost story bibliography, Shadows in the Attic (British Library, 2000) provides authoritative and extensive introductory notes, including a history of the supernatural from ancient to modern times; an analysis of the evolution of the ghost story; and an exploration of common themes and topics in supernatural fiction.Note: Ghost Writings offers an invaluable introduction to the genre compiled with the aim of inspiring the reader to explore further. It concentrates particularly on the rich heritage of British ghost fiction, and for this reason American authors in the genre are not included. It should also be noted that the selected bibliographies included with author details are not comprehensive and often include publications that are now out of print; they are mentioned solely for historical interest. However, many of these works are now widely available in new print and electronic editions and can be readily found on Amazon.

Описание: A comprehensive account of two of the most important empires in medieval North Africa
This is the first book in English to provide a comprehensive account of the rise and fall of the Almoravids and the Almohads, the two most important Berber dynasties of the medieval Islamic west, an area that encompassed southern Spain and Portugal, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The Ṣanhāja Almoravids emerged from the Sahara in the 1050s to conquer vast territories and halt the Christian advance in Iberia. They were replaced a century later by their rivals, the Almohads, supported by the Maṣmūda Berbers of the High Atlas. Although both have often been seen as uncouth, religiously intolerant tribesmen who undermined the high culture of al-Andalus, this book argues that the eleventh to thirteenth centuries were crucial to the Islamisation of the Maghrib, its integration into the Islamic cultural sphere, and its emergence as a key player in the western Mediterranean, and that much of this was due to these oft-neglected Berber empires.
Key features
The first work in English to give a full account of the Almoravids and Almohads
Features numerous translated quotes and anecdotes from Arabic primary sources
Provides an intimate portrait of the daily lives and material culture of people living within the empires, as well as delivering a clear dynastic history
Uses maps, genealogical tables, illustrations and a chronology
In this accessibly written history, Amira K. Bennison contradicts the common assumption that Islam somehow interrupted the smooth flow of Western civilization from its Graeco-Roman origins to its more recent European and American manifestations. Instead, she places Islamic civilization in the longer trajectory of Mediterranean civilizations and sees the 'Abbasid Empire (750-1258 CE) as the inheritor and interpreter of Graeco-Roman traditions.
At its zenith the 'Abbasid caliphate stretched over the entire Middle East and part of North Africa, and influenced Islamic regimes as far west as Spain. Bennison's examination of the politics, society, and culture of the 'Abbasid period presents a picture of a society that nurtured many of the "civilized" values that Western civilization claims to represent, albeit in different premodern forms: from urban planning and international trade networks to religious pluralism and academic research. Bennison's argument counters the common Western view of Muslim culture as alien and offers a new perspective on the relationship between Western and Islamic cultures.
